Sumitomo consortium lands contract for 2500MW Qatar power plant
Japanese industrial conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation has announced that its consortium has secured a contract from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for the construction and operation of a 2,400MW natural gas-fired power plant at a key site in the country's Ras Abu Fontas area.
In addition to this, the Sumitomo consortium - comprising Japanese group Shikoku Electric Power Company alongside Korean entities Kospo (Korea Southern Power Company) and KIND (Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation) will also be responsible for the development of a seawater desalination facility with a 110 MIGD capacity in the area.
These utility projects will be coming up on the site of an old power plant located approximately 25km south of capital Doha.
On the long-term power and water sale agreement with Kahramaa, Sumitomo Corporation said this was the first power project for the Japanese group in Qatar.
Compared to existing gas-fired power plants, the new plant will employ high-efficiency gas turbines that consume less gas and emit lower levels of CO2 and other pollutants, contributing to stable energy supplies and decarbonization efforts in Qatar, it stated.
In the future, the Government of Qatar and the project company will explore new plans for Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) to further reduce CO2 emissions, it added.
The Japanese industrial conglomerate also pointed out that this marked its second collaboration with Shikoku Electric for an overseas project, following the Hamriyah Independent Power Project in Sharjah, UAE.
While, this is Sumitomo's debut power project in Qatar, for its Japanese partner Shikoku Electric, this is its second, following the Ras Laffan C Water and Power Project.
Sumitomo Corporation has previously managed private-sector independent power projects (IPP) and independent water and power projects (IWPP) in the Middle East, including Kuwait and the UAE, and has expertise in maintenance and operations.
Through this project, Sumitomo Corporation will contribute to the stable supply of electricity and water in Qatar.-

The Saudi Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is celebrating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Japan. The two countries established diplomatic relations on June 7, 1955, laying the foundation for a long-term partnership that has evolved over the decades into a multifaceted alliance enhancing cultural exchange and diplomatic cooperation. This partnership has also had a significant economic impact on both nations. In February 2025, Saudi Arabia and Japan signed a memorandum to establish a Strategic Partnership Council. 'With Expo 2025 taking place in Osaka and Saudi Arabia hosting Expo 2030 in Riyadh, our two countries stand at the forefront of global exchange, showcasing the latest innovations and sustainable technologies, and contributing to shaping an inclusive future for all.' The Saudi Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka hosts hundreds of business events aimed at strengthening trade and investment relations between the Kingdom and Japan. These include presentations led by the Ministries of Investment and Commerce, as well as events highlighting the trade and investment opportunities offered by Saudi Vision 2030. Trade volume between the two countries has grown significantly over the past decade, rising from $33.4 billion to over $41 billion currently. The Saudi Pavilion aims to increase the number of Japanese visitors to the Kingdom, targeting 30,000 annual visitors before Expo 2030 Riyadh. This is part of the comprehensive Saudi-Japan Vision 2030 strategy, which includes more than 80 projects across nine sectors: culture, food and agricultural security, media and entertainment, healthcare, advanced infrastructure, finance and investment, competitive industries, energy, small and medium enterprises, sports, and education. Cultural exchange between the two countries has flourished, highlighted by Saudi Arabia's role in bringing Japanese culture to the Middle East through local manga studios, whose works will be showcased at the Saudi Pavilion in August. The Saudi Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka offers more than 700 diverse and engaging events, including daily shows and live performing arts. Since the Expo opened in April 2025, it has attracted over 500,000 visitors. On September 23, it is expected to host a variety of events and presentations in celebration of Saudi National Day.

South Korean firms eye Bahrain as gateway to MENA at business forum
Bahrain's business- and investor-friendly environment was hailed as an ideal gateway to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during the 7th Bahrain-Korea Business Forum, held yesterday in Manama. The forum brought together over 100 governmental and business representatives from Bahrain and South Korea, underscoring the growing economic partnership between the two nations. Hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in close cooperation with Bahrain's Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Economic Development Board, Bahrain Chamber, and the Bahrain–South Korea Friendship Society, the forum highlighted opportunities for deeper collaboration in sectors such as ICT, smart farming, K-beauty, and food. Speaking at the event, Dr KOO Heonsang, Korean Ambassador to Bahrain, praised Bahrain's efforts toward economic diversification under the Economic Vision 2030. He said Bahrain's business- and investor-friendly environment makes it an ideal gateway to the MENA region. Ambassador KOO also welcomed the upcoming ratification of the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, signed last year between Korea and Bahrain. Once in force, the agreement is expected to create a more secure and predictable environment for cross-border investments. TDT | Manama Trade growth spotlighted at Bahrain-Korea forum Bahrain's trade with South Korea jumped by 15 percent in 2024, reaching over $458 million, the Bahrain Chamber revealed at the seventh Bahrain-Korea Business Forum held on Wednesday in Manama. The forum, hosted at the Radisson Blu Hotel, brought together senior business leaders and government officials from both nations to review achievements and chart future opportunities. Mohammed Abduljabbar Al Kooheji, Second Vice Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber, delivered the keynote address, stressing that the growth in trade reflects a deepening partnership built on trust and long-standing cooperation.
