Rechargeable vape fire warning ahead of disposable ban
Disposable vapes will be illegal to buy in less than a week's time - and a fire service has issued a warning to people switching over to reusables when the ban comes in.Essex Fire and Rescue Service said it had seen a rise in charger fires associated with reusable vapes, many of which are "entirely preventable"."The majority of vape-related fires we attend are caused by unsafe charging, particularly using the wrong charger or leaving devices charging unattended" said Andrea MacAlister, the service's head of prevention."We've seen too many fires caused by counterfeit or incompatible chargers and batteries," she added.
Recent data from Essex Fire and Rescue Service shows in 2021 and 2022 only two vape-related fires were reported each year, but the number rose to 17 in 2023 and 2024. The number is small compared to the millions of people in the UK who vape, but as more people switch to rechargeable devices, it is a trend the fire service is keen to address. Ms MacAlister recommended staying in the room while a reusable vape charged "to quickly spot any signs of overheating or malfunction"."It's also crucial to use the battery and charger that came with your vape and if you need a replacement, always buy from a reputable source," she said.The county's fire service is offering free home fire safety visits to people in Essex who vape or smoke.
Every second, approximately 13 vapes are thrown away or recycled incorrectly in the UK, according to the latest research. Vapes are powered by lithium-ion batteries which, when thrown away and crushed, have caused fires in bin lorries and waste centres. The ban on disposable vapes aims to reduce the environmental impact of vaping and its appeal to children and young people.
Those who vape are also being warned of the dangers of counterfeits, with raids by trading standards teams on shops in Southend-on-Sea recently uncovering 1000 non-compliant disposable vapes. Similarly, in Thurrock, 45,000 illegal vapes have been seized in the past three years, including some sold at a car boot sale which were linked to a young person needing hospital treatment. In March, magistrates ordered the Mellow Yellow Vape Shack, in Grays, to be closed for three months after illegal vapes and tobacco were discovered for the second time in six months. Health experts agree anyone who does not smoke should not start vaping, as it may cause long-term damage to lungs, hearts and brains.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed on Sunday that two people died in the tragedy. The force explained: "A car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below." Cops also closed the neighbouring Needles Landmark Attraction while emergency crews attended the site. Responders were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. In a statement released on Saturday evening, a police spokesperson said: "Formal identification has yet to take place, but their next of kin have been notified. "As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, on behalf of the coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes." 6 6

Gold suitcase found after mum-of-three, 32, ‘murdered' at home – as two more men are arrested
TWO further arrests have been made following the murder of a Portsmouth woman. Samantha Murphy, 32, was found dead inside her North End home in Portsmouth on June 5. 3 3 A gold suitcase was also found after police launched an appeal to help find the item they believed could further the investigation. A 30-year-old man from Southsea was arrested on suspicion of murder while a 41-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Two 32-year-old men previously arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on conditional bail until September 5. 'We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding whilst we have been carrying out enquiries in the area. 'As part of our enquiries, we appealed for help in locating a gold suitcase. We can confirm this has now been found and we would like to thank everyone who contacted us with information.'

Bradford teenager charged with murder of Muhammad Junaid Khan
A teenager has been charged with the murder of a 19-year-old man who was fatally stabbed in Bradford. Muhammad Junaid Khan died on Loughrigg Street, in the West Bowling area of the city, on Friday, with a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old man also stabbed. Mohammed Mehmood, 18, of Woodroyd Road, Bradford, is also charged with attempted murder, assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of a knife in a public place, West Yorkshire Police Mehmood was remanded into custody, the force said, and is due to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court later.
