Fantasy Premier League: Mateta, Cunha and other FPL red flags to overcome in Gameweek 28

New York Times06-03-2025

A pause in Premier League action hasn't meant a break from planning for FPL managers after an eventful round of FA Cup last-16 action.
We now have more information on how the blank and double gameweeks will pan out later in the season, with doubles scheduled for Gameweeks 32 and 33, followed by a blank in Gameweek 34. The bad news? There were several injuries and incidents leading to suspensions involving players who were set to be popular fantasy picks in the coming weeks.
So, what are the key takeaways from the weekend and how should they impact your transfer plans?
Sunday saw the return of Newcastle's Alexander Isak (£9.4m) from injury, with the Sweden international having missed his club's midweek 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in Gamweek 27 with a groin issue.
The 56 per cent-owned striker duly scored the opening goal in a 2-1 extra-time FA Cup defeat against Brighton from the penalty spot before being replaced by Callum Wilson in the 86th minute. Isak visibly limped off the pitch at St James' Park, but Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe quashed any fitness concerns in his post-match press conference, citing tiredness for the 25-year-old, who is no longer flagged as a Gameweek 28 injury concern in FPL.

Fantasy managers may be considering selling Isak given his looming blank in Gameweek 29 and the fact Howe could choose to protect his star man ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool that weekend. However, Isak has risen in price by £0.9million since the start of the season, with many owners carrying significant value in a player who has 19 league goals already in his 24 appearances.
Keeping in mind that he is also set to double in Gameweek 32, it's important to keep hold of Isak. However, Newcastle's failure to beat Brighton and progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals means they are unlikely to double again this season.
Staying with Newcastle, left-back Lewis Hall (£5.0m) is out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury he suffered in that Liverpool match. Naturally, the 22 per cent of managers in the game who own him (at the time of writing) should now look to sell.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.7m) of Wolves is the best like-for-like replacement to take advantage of his club's good fixtures. Alternatively, consider Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol (£5.9m) if you have the funds in the bank.
The player-availability problems worsened for Newcastle with the red card for Anthony Gordon (£7.4m) in that FA Cup defeat.
The England midfielder will serve a three-match ban, including the Carabao Cup final, and so won't be available again for FPL selection until the trip to Leicester in Gameweek 31. This is an appropriate point for his owners to sell Gordon, with the potential there to reinvest in him on a wildcard in Gameweek 31 ahead of Newcastle's Double Gameweek 32.
Among the potential replacements are Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m), who is the third highest-scoring player in the game this season behind Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Chelsea's Cole Palmer.

We also saw Wolves striker Matheus Cunha (£7.0m) sent off late in his team's FA Cup defeat against Bournemouth. He had scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw, with Wolves eventually losing 5-4 on penalties. Cunha has been charged by the FA, so is set to miss more than just the next three games after his clash with Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez during extra time. We should hear an outcome from the FA next week.
The Brazilian was among the most-bought players going into last weekend due to an exciting blend of form and upcoming fixtures, but he is now a sell given another period of absence from Wolves' line-up.
Cunha's ban is not the only problem currently facing our forward lines as Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) sustained a head injury in a wince-inducing collision with Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts on Saturday in the FA Cup and is now a doubt for Crystal Palace's home game against Ipswich this weekend.
The striker, who was placed in a neck brace and taken to hospital, had been the most-purchased player heading into Gameweek 28 after five goal involvements in his previous four Premier League matches. If Mateta doesn't play against Ipswich, he blanks in Gameweek 29.
For those managers looking to navigate Blank Gameweek 29 without using the Free Hit chip, Mateta's lack of availability ahead of the next two gameweeks also makes him a likely sell.
If you are among those managers who don't already own Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood (£7.2m), now is absolutely the time to buy. He also has five goal involvements in the past four gameweeks, taking him to 18 league goals for the season.
Alternatively, Brentford's Yoane Wissa (£6.4m) may be a wise investment, with the striker having scored in their past two games. The west Londoners' fixtures may not justify the double-up with midfielder Mbeumo, however.
It's worth noting that Manchester City's Erling Haaland (£14.7m) looks to be the best captain pick for Blank Gameweek 29 at home to Brighton in the cup final-enforced absence of Salah (£13.8m). If you have the option to bench Cunha this week, you could then free up funds elsewhere in Gameweek 29 to find the route to buying and captaining Haaland.
The FA Cup round of 16's results have allowed us to build a picture of what Blank Gameweek 34 might look like, with three or four postponements expected given the teams who are through to the quarter-finals that weekend.
There are just four league games set to go ahead as things stand: Chelsea vs Everton, Liverpool vs Tottenham, Wolves vs Leicester and Newcastle vs Ipswich.

FPL experts predict postponed fixtures are most likely to move up into Gameweek 33, which could create the busiest double gameweek of the season and the big target for your Bench Boost chip.
The schedule will be confirmed after the quarter-finals take place over the last weekend in March, with final fixture confirmations likely to come ahead of Gameweek 31 the following weekend.
The close proximity of a Double Gameweek 33 immediately followed by a Blank Gameweek 34 likely impacting a similar pool of clubs means that, in terms of chip strategy, playing your Free Hit in the latter is the obvious move. For that reason, fantasy managers should be encouraged to navigate the looming Blank Gameweek 29 without using that chip, with Aston Villa, Palace, Liverpool and Newcastle the absentees.

Report: Liverpool weigh £30m sale as Brentford and others show interest

Ben Doak and Liverpool's £30m Opportunity: Smart Business or Short-Sighted Sale? Transfer Turbulence Around Young Talent Liverpool's summer activity has been relentless, with deals flowing in and out of the club in rapid succession. The latest transfer spotlight, however, is fixed on 19-year-old Ben Doak, a name that barely registered with the casual fan last summer but now finds himself a £30m-rated target for a trio of Premier League clubs. Advertisement Per the Hounslow Herald, Brentford are keen to add Doak to a growing collection of ex-Liverpool talent, having already secured the signatures of Caoimhin Kelleher, Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho over the past two summers. But they're not alone. Crystal Palace and Brighton have reportedly entered the fray, a development that significantly strengthens Liverpool's hand. Sale May Fund Big-Name Targets Liverpool's motivation is clear. While they've already welcomed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and bid farewell to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kelleher, bigger targets are on the radar. Chief among them is Florian Wirtz. Liverpool to recoup funds to help fund Wirtz and more. With the club still engaged in talks over Milos Kerkez and potentially a striker, Doak's sale could serve a broader strategic purpose. His potential may be considerable, but in a summer of reshaping, even promising youth might be considered expendable to fund marquee arrivals. Market Value and Timing Work in Liverpool's Favour Doak's value, and the timing of this interest, place Liverpool in an advantageous position. Ipswich Town had tried in January, but the Reds didn't want to sell. The mood seems to have shifted, and rightly so. The competition between Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace all but guarantees a fee close to the full £30m. Photo IMAGO Given that Doak's 2024/25 campaign was hampered by injury after a strong loan stint at Middlesbrough, it's a bold valuation—but not unrealistic. There's enough performance data, promise and Premier League readiness to justify it, particularly in a summer when even mid-table clubs have serious money to spend. Development Versus Immediate Value Selling Doak would be another sign that Liverpool are prioritising short-term gains and proven quality over longer-term squad depth and player development. That may be a calculated risk worth taking, but it will only pay off if their reinvestments—particularly in the Wirtz deal—yield immediate returns. Advertisement It's a recurring theme under Fenway Sports Group: buy low, develop smart, and sell high. In this case, it might be more about selling smart and buying elite. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis There's no doubt Ben Doak has something about him. Pacey, direct, and fearless—he looks every inch a player suited to Arne Slot's dynamic football. His performances at Middlesbrough hinted at serious potential, and despite injury setbacks, most Liverpool fans would have liked to see him get a proper run in the first team before decisions are made. That said, £30m is no small change for a player who's still largely unproven at Premier League level. If that money helps secure someone like Florian Wirtz, a generational talent who could redefine Liverpool's attacking play, then it becomes more palatable. But it always stings to see homegrown or carefully scouted youth sold on just before they might explode. Advertisement Brentford, Brighton and Palace are all clubs with smart recruitment and solid coaching. If any of them land Doak, he'll probably thrive. The worry then is hindsight. If he becomes a star elsewhere, fans will question why we didn't show more patience. Still, given the bigger picture and financial pragmatism required to stay competitive in the modern game, this looks like a sale Liverpool can afford to make—but only if they get the rest of their summer business absolutely right.

Liverpool to make offer for €60m centre-back within DAYS

Liverpool secured Virgil van Dijk to a contract renewal before the end of the season. With the Dutchman's previous terms expiring in summer 2025, sporting director Richard Hughes ensured continuity at centre-back by having Van Dijk commit until 2027. That gives the Reds a degree of security in making their defensive plans but all around Van Dijk there is uncertainty. We could see Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez LEAVE in this transfer window, reducing the number of available centre-backs by two. Advertisement Those sales would leave Liverpool with ONLY Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as options in the heart of defence. But the captain turns 34 this summer and won't be around forever, while the Merseysiders have also got a problem to solve with Konate. The Frenchman, 26, is out of contract next year and if no agreement is reached over a renewal then he too could be sold. In this context it is wise for Richard Hughes and Arne Slot to be looking at the market for new defenders. Diomande back on the radar Their search has now reportedly taken them back to Portugal, where Ousmane Diomande is once again in focus. Diomande, 21, has just won the Portuguese league and cup double with his side, earning the plaudits for another solid season's work. Advertisement The Ivory Coast international is now attracting transfer attention from the Premier League - with A Bola disclosing that Crystal Palace have got the former Midtjylland stopper on their list to replace Marc Guehi. 'The Premier League club sought to find out the amount to buy the central defender from Alvalade and received the answer immediately: the Lions will only sit at the negotiating table for amounts of around €60 million,' the report reads. But intriguingly it's added that several other Premier League clubs - Liverpool included - have also taken this 'first step' towards signing Diomande. Liverpool could make Diomande offer 'Crystal Palace, by the way, were not the only ones to take this first step towards Diomande,' the report continues. Advertisement 'Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as Bayern Munich (interest dating back to January) have not lost sight of the centre-back and could make an offer in the coming days.' Diomande is under contract until 2027 having joined Sporting from Danish side Midtjylland in 2023. He has played 101 times for Sporting, scoring six goals and adding two assists. On FOTMOB he ranks highly for recoveries and duels won - while his aerial duel percentage is solid at around 65 percent.

Liverpool get MASSIVE boost in Julian Alvarez chase

Liverpool have got a DREAM No9 in their sights in the shape of Julian Alvarez. The 25-year-old has been on the Reds' radar since his days as a young player back at River Plate. Since then the Argentine World Cup winner has gone on to bigger and better things - with his trophy cabinet already hugely impressive. Advertisement Alvarez made the move from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid last summer in a deal that could end up being worth €95 million in total. And he had a terrific season on a personal level for Diego Simeone's side - scoring 29 goals in 54 games. However, Atletico's challenges in LaLiga and the Champions League disintegrated, leaving them without a prize. Atletico chasing Gyokeres There are big changes planned at the Wanda Metropolitano this summer and several alterations to the forward line are expected. With Antoine Griezmann signing a new contract until 2027, he is the ONLY Atleti attacker assured of his place in the squad next season. Advertisement That's according to a report in Record, which suggests that Viktor Gyokeres is a contender to arrive. The Swede has got a €100m buyout clause in his Sporting CP contract but according to the Portuguese publication, Atletico are hoping to reduce that fee to €70m. Gyokeres scored 54 goals in 52 games for the Portuguese double-winners last season, underlining his credentials as one of the most coveted strikers in world football. Atletico are said to be hoping to use sponsorships and increased Champions League revenues to fund a bid for Gyokeres and previously it was reported that Nike were willing to help out. © IMAGO Alvarez considering Atletico future? Where a move for Gyokeres leaves Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth is uncertain right now. Both were effective last season but maybe Simeone is seeking to move in a different direction. Advertisement Alvarez has previously been reported to be questioning his own future following Atletico's disappointing season and would consider an exit in 2026. He is under contract until 2030 with Los Colchoneros, but Liverpool would surely waste no time in getting a bid off the ground for him if the opportunity arose. The club wanted to add him to the ranks last summer but were stymied by Man City's desire to include Luis Diaz in the deal - and he ended up in Spain instead. But if the capital club are going to build their new attack around the talents of Gyokeres then Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes could be given an unexpected chance to pounce.
