To address the shortage of trains and ensure smooth operations for Phase-2 metro expansions, has signed an agreement with BEML to procure 42 additional coaches (equivalent to seven trains) for the upcoming Pink Line. The ₹405-crore deal aims to prevent train shortages when the Pink Line becomes operational in 2026.The operational Purple and Green Lines are currently facing a shortage of trains, which has also delayed the launch of the Yellow Line connecting to Electronic City.Anticipating similar challenges for the Pink Line between Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara (21.76 km), BMRCL has decided to augment its fleet. In 2023, BMRCL signed a major agreement with BEML to supply 318 coaches (53 trains) for the Blue Line (2A and 2B) connecting to Kempegowda International Airport, and the Pink Line. Of these, 96 coaches were initially earmarked for the Pink Line. To further strengthen the fleet, BMRCL has now extended the previous order to include seven more trains.A BMRCL official said, 'This deal marks one of the largest coach procurement contracts for BMRCL. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided funding support of ₹3,177 crore for the project. The new coaches will feature the latest CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) technology, enabling driverless operations, and will be built using austenitic stainless steel. Each six-coach train will have two air-conditioning systems per coach, advanced passenger information systems (PIS), high safety features, and superior interior designs.'As per the agreement, each newly added coach will cost ₹19.64 crore, compared to ₹29.99 crore per coach in the earlier tender, which included supply and 15 years of maintenance. For the Blue Line project alone, 96 coaches have been designated for the Central Silk Board–KR Puram (2A) section and 126 coaches for the KR Puram–Airport (2B) stretch. Additional features include Platform Screen Door System (PSDS) integration for enhanced safety, LCD route maps, and automatic electric doors. The coaches will be manufactured at BEML's Metro Rail Shed in Bengaluru, further boosting the city's metro infrastructure, BMRCL official added.

Union asks for more rakes, personnel for Purple, Orange Lines
Kolkata: The Pragatisil Sramik Karmachari Union has urged Metro Railway to add rakes and traffic personnel for the Purple and Orange lines, which are set to extend operations now that they are equipped with the advanced signalling system. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On behalf of the INTTUC-affiliated Metro workers' union, general secretary Samir Bera wrote to Metro's chief operations manager. With no fresh recruitment and staff members continuously being transferred out of the North-South (Blue) line, the situation is worse for the truncated Purple (Joka-Majerhat) and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) lines. "The launch of the Yellow Line and the Green Line's last leg is imminent. We welcome the opening of new lines. Unfortunately, the workforce is dragged from the Blue Line, which is already reeling under an acute staff shortage," wrote Bera. Union vice-president Subhasis Sengupta said, "So many extensions but there aren't enough rakes, motormen, or traffic personnel to operate them." In a report titled "Lone rake pulls Purple Line ops, normal services from today", TOI highlighted the rake and manpower personnel issues. Until April, the Purple line offered 18 services at 50-minute intervals. Following the signalling upgrade, 44 services were added from May 9, and the six-hour services doubled. However, a single rake continued to run up and down the 8-km corridor, while another remained on standby.

On day of RCB stampede, BMRCL posted record ridership of 9.66 lakh commuters
: On the day a stampede broke out in Bengaluru while celebrating the victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL final, killing 11 and leaving scores injured, the Namma Metro witnessed unprecedented footfall. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recorded its highest-ever single-day ridership on June 4, with a total of 9,66,732 commuters boarding the metro. Swelling crowds The fan frenzy that gripped the city saw lakhs thronging the streets and public spaces, especially in the Central Business District (CBD), eventually resulting in a stampede that left 11 dead. The chaos prompted heavy reliance on the metro to manage the swelling crowds on June 4. According to BMRCL officials, Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha, M. G. Road, and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Central College metro stations — all located in the heart of the CBD — reported a sharp spike in usage. According to BMRCL, Line 1 (Purple Line) recorded the highest passenger traffic with 4,78,334 boardings, while Line 2 (Green Line) saw 2,84,674 commuters. The Kempegowda interchange station at Majestic alone handled 2,03,724 passengers. On June 4, amid the ongoing chaos near Chinnaswamy stadium and Vidhana Soudha, the BMRCL announced that trains would skip stops at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park metro stations. Spillover crowds This led to a spillover of crowds at adjacent stations such as Sir M. Visvesvaraya Central College, M. G. Road, and Trinity, with the ripple effect extending all the way to Swami Vivekananda Road station. With metro access restricted near the core area, many commuters were seen walking several kilometres from the stadium vicinity to reach operational metro stations. To manage the overwhelming rush, BMRCL allowed commuters to enter without scanning QR code tickets, smart cards, or tokens, which resulted in bottlenecks and congestion near the entry barricades. This indicates that ridership could have been much more than what was recorded. Several videos that surfaced on social media showed passengers jumping over fare gates to board the trains without paying for their rides.
