Pixlr backs Malaysia's AI push
KUALA LUMPUR: Local tech firm Pixlr Group has expanded its support for Malaysia's national AI education goals. This is by offering free access to its digital design tools through the Ministry of Education's Digital Educational Learning Initiative Malaysia (DELIMa) platform. The initiative, known as Pixlr for Education, now reaches more than 4.1 million students and 500,000 teachers across the country. Pixlr, best known for its AI-powered photo editing tools like and was first integrated into DELIMa in mid-2022. The company also launched a teacher training programme in 2023 to accompany the rollout. To date, more than 1,500 educators have received instruction on how to incorporate AI tools into the classroom, free of charge. Pixlr founder and chief exceutive officer Stephanie Sitt said the move was driven by a desire to contribute to the local education sector, especially after seeing the software's impact in other countries during the Covid-19 lockdowns. "We saw Pixlr helping so many educators overseas during the Covid-19 lockdowns, especially in the US where it is widely used on Google Chromebooks. That's when we thought: Can't we do the same here at home?" In addition to its work in Malaysia, Pixlr is also part of Singapore's national digital learning ecosystem. It is currently whitelisted on the country's Student Learning Space, used by over 35,000 teachers and 450,000 students. Despite its growing international footprint (its mobile AI photo editor has surpassed 100 million downloads globally), Pixlr said it remains committed to regional digital education initiatives. "By embedding accessible AI tools in classrooms, Pixlr aims to support skills development and digital readiness among students and teachers in Southeast Asia," Sitt said.

According to the school's management board chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, these efforts align with education reforms focused on strengthening teacher professionalism, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), using technology in teaching, and reducing dropout rates. 'However, while the board is committed to supporting these changes, it still faces limitations and relies on allocations from the Education Department to support the school,' he said during the school's 'Teacher's Day' celebration at a hotel here on Friday. Lau added that the official theme for the national 2025 Teacher's Day celebration, 'Guru Pemacu Reformasi Pendidikan' (Teachers Driving Educational Reform), reflected the evolving role of teachers in leading innovation and student-centred learning in today's fast-changing education landscape. 'Teachers are key drivers of this change, guiding students to meet the demands of the digital era. 'With the support of the community, and the dedication of our staff and students, I believe our school will continue to grow, keep pace with the times, and contribute meaningfully to education reform. 'These reforms also bring challenges, from adopting new tools to addressing students' needs – all of which require strong support and an enabling environment.' Lau also pointed out that although SK Bandaran Sibu No 2 might not be comparable with other larger schools here in terms of facilities, it would be up to the teachers and headmaster to 'turn weaknesses into strength'. Lau also expressed hope that the school would win more awards in curriculum and co-curricular activities in time to come, and urged teachers to find opportunities for students who may not excel academically but possess other talents. Meanwhile, the headmaster Vong Kiong Ming stated that the Ministry of Education had allocated RM450,000 for the school's upgrading works, particularly those on maintenance of the administrative block. . Harden: Sarawak focussed on shaping future-ready, employable workforce with industry-relevant curricula
Datuk Francis Harden – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING: The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development is committed to ensuring Sarawak's tertiary education curricula remains industry-relevant, adaptive, and future-proof, said Deputy Minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis. He said the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) is playing a crucial role in shaping a skilled, future-ready workforce aligned with the state's economic ambitions under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'This is so graduates are employable and equipped to drive Sarawak's socioeconomic transformation,' he said when responding to Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor (GPS-Lingga), during the question-and-answer session in the State Legislative Assembly here today. Dayang Noorazah had asked how the state government works with industry to align FTES with Sarawak's workforce and economic development needs. In response to a supplementary question on the ministry's programmes or platforms that link Sarawak's education system to industry demands, he cited the annual Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaTFair). 'It aims to provide information on education and career opportunities, enhance the employability of graduates and youth, and empower them to make decisions about their future,' he said. He added the ministry works closely with various agencies and stakeholders to ensure graduates are aligned with current job market needs. He said agencies such as Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas) as well as strategic partnerships with key agencies including Social Security Organisation (Socso), Sarawak Skills, Centre of Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petrona), and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) have been instrumental in supporting these efforts,' he said. According to Harden, Sarawakians, regardless of location, can take part in and benefit from the state's high-tech economic growth. 'Our institutions emphasise hands-on, practical approaches that build both technical and critical thinking skills. 'Especially to the rural communities, with initiatives such as Industry Technology Outreach Programme (ITOP), Community Technology Outreach Programme (CTOP), Village Transformation Programme (VTP), and industry collaboration and mobile training units, they deliver high-value training on renewable energy, digital economy, and agro-industry directly to local areas,' he said.
