Phil Murphy talks 2026 FIFA World Cup at NJ budget address
During his 2026 New Jersey budget address, Gov. Phil Murphy discussed the upcoming FIFA World Cup plans.
It's official. The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off at East Rutherford's MetLife Stadium in one year.
To celebrate the last 365 days of preparation, Gov. Phil Murphy and the regional host committee, including CEO Alex Lasry and board chair Tammy Murphy, were at Liberty State Park in Jersey City Wednesday morning to outline the FIFA Fan Festival experience set to take place next summer.
Joined by fan favorites like Mr. and Mrs. Met, Giants legend Victor Cruz and representatives from most of the region's professional sports teams, a mini festival complete with food trucks and activities for kids was set up to show, on a small scale, what is coming in 2026.
With lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty serving as a backdrop, the park will be the premier fan festival during all 40 days of next summer's global event.
More than 100 matches, including the ones scheduled to be played at MetLife will be broadcast live for fans to enjoy along with entertainment presented by LiveNation, food and other cultural exhibits that represent the Garden State and our neighbors across the Hudson River.
What did NJ officials say?
Gov. Phil Murphy said that between this year's Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup, the region will be 'soccer central worldwide, globally, for the next 15 months' and said there is a commitment to the legacy of the sport.
'MLS was born out of the 1996 World Cup. I can only imagine what will be born out of this World Cup and most importantly in the communities in the region on both sides of the Hudson,' he said.
Lasry said Liberty State Park will serve as the 'central gathering place for fans from across the world' and explained it will be the largest and most visible fan festival of the tournament.
Officials expect tens of thousands of fans to attend the festival during each of its 39 days and have partnered with LiveNation and DPS to produce the programming which will include concerts on rest days.
Among those fans will be 'all six Murphys,' according to first lady Tammy Murphy.

2025 FIFA Club World Cup gives NJ a preview of 2026
Fans get a little taste of the global soccer experience starting this weekend at MetLife when the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off.
This year's tournament features club teams — professional teams from leagues around the world — as opposed to national teams that will compete in the 2026 World Cup.
It's unclear whether the immigration and border security initiatives of the Trump administration will affect the tournaments. Among the teams to already qualify is Iran, which is one of the countries included in Trump's latest full travel ban.
President Donald Trump did attend the Club World Cup draw in December and said he "will try to be" at the tournament. He has hosted FIFA President Gianni Infantino at his Mar-a-Lago Club and the White House. Infantino also attended Trump's second inauguration.
Murphy said Wednesday that his understanding is that there will be exceptions for big sporting events and this is the 'biggest in the world.'
He went on to say there is a 'long road to travel' between now and when the tournament starts but that all of the teams that qualify will be able to play.
When asked about concerns tourists may have about the presence of ICE and comments made by Vice President J.D. Vance about visitors, Murphy said he 'can't speak' for them but is 'hugely optimistic this is going to be a blowout success and a safe World Cup.'
'Based on all the vibrations I hear… this is going to be done in a first class welcoming way,' he said.
Lasry said the host committee's 'concern and goal' is that everyone that comes to the tournament has an incredible time.

Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa to miss Club World Cup after being denied US visa
Associated Press BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will miss the Club World Cup after he was denied a visa to enter the United States, the Argentine team said Thursday. Costa did not make the trip to Miami with his teammates on Sunday because his visa application was still being processed at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, but he was still included on the roster to play in the tournament that starts Saturday. Boca Juniors confirmed that the 25-year-old Costa was denied a visa, but did not provide details on the reasons. Costa was involved in a criminal case over an attempted robbery in 2018 in Bernal, Argentina. His absence leaves coach Miguel Russo without one of his expected starters for the match against Benfica on Monday in the team's Group C opener. The group also includes Bayern Munich and Auckland City of New Zealand. Also, defender Marco Pellegrino, who signed ahead of the Club World Cup, is recovering from a muscle tear. With Costa out, veteran Marcos Rojo is expected to start. The defender signed with Boca Juniors last January after a brief stint with Belgium's Royal Antwerp. ___ AP soccer:

Harvey Elliott helps England make winning start in Euro Under-21 against Czechs
In a week that England's senior side have hardly covered themselves in glory, perhaps the under-21s could make it another memorable summer? While Lee Carsley has played down his youthful squad's chances of emulating Dave Sexton's back-to-back triumphs in becoming European champions in 1982 and 1984, a convincing and mature victory over a boisterously backed Czech Republic team hinted that it may not be beyond the realms of possibility. Goals from Harvey Elliott and Charlie Cresswell sandwiched by another from Jonathan Rowe were enough to allow England to take a commanding position in Group B after brief hopes of a comeback from the Czech Republic. Victory over Slovenia, who were beaten 3-0 by Germany in their opening match, on Sunday would assure a place in the quarter-finals. Advertisement Related: Czech Republic 1-3 England: European Under-21 Championship – live reaction Carsley had warned that an inexperienced squad that contains just two of those who won in Georgia two years ago could look 'a little bit clunky'. But while Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson managed to pick up a booking after just 17 seconds for a misjudged tackle, England made an encouraging start with the captain, James McAtee, employed as a false 9 in the absence of Liam Delap, who is one of several players missing due to Club World Cup commitments. Omari Hutchinson forced Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek into a reaction save at his near post before Vaclav Sejk was inches away from connecting with a cross that fizzed across the face of goal at the other end. The large contingent of red-shirted supporters who had made the short journey across the border and made up 90% of the crowd sensed an opportunity for a country that has failed to get past the group stage of this competition since 2011. It needed a solid save from Brighton's James Beadle, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, to keep out Stepan Chaloupek's header from a free-kick when the Czech Republic captain found himself totally unmarked before Alex Scott did well to block a goalbound shot from a corner. With Liverpool's Jarell Quansah and Charlie Cresswell of Toulouse looking shaky at the back, England were riding their luck as Carsley assumed his favoured touchline position on his haunches. Advertisement Such is the depth of talent in this age group that seven members of Thomas Tuchel's latest senior squad – including Jude Bellingham, Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer – were still eligible to take part here. Newcastle's Tino Livramento, who has already won a senior cap during Carsley's spell as interim manager, was instrumental in the opening goal. His cross was almost deflected in but McAtee kept the ball in play and it was drilled in by Elliott. Beadle then had to be alert to prevent the ball from trickling over his line after it had come off Qunasah's arm following a goalmouth scramble moments after England had taken the lead. Once more it was Livramento who seemed to have settled their nerves three minutes after the restart when he darted into the area and delivered a cross that Rowe managed to get the slightest of flicks on to deceive the unsighted Hornicek at his near post. But the Czech Republic hit back immediately when Livramento was caught out by a cross from Sejk and Daniel Fila gratefully headed in. Advertisement 'We've got to play,' came the message from Carsley as his side attempted to wrest back control. The introduction of Birmingham's Jay Stansfield and Ethan Nwaneri of Arsenal from the bench for the last 20 minutes was an indication that the job was not done. It didn't take long for Nwaneri to make an impact, producing a cheeky nutmeg before setting off on a mazy run that saw his shot deflect just wide. Cresswell sealed the victory minutes later when he headed in Scott's corner to give Carsley the perfect start.
