Shillong: Meghalaya is all geared up for the 11th
International Yoga Day
celebration on June 21, with the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homeopathy (NEIAH), Shillong, conducting yoga sessions on Friday in the run-up to the event.
Union ministry of Ayush has identified NEIAH as the nodal unit to conduct various activities.
Under the theme 'Yoga for one earth, one health', the institute will organise a special event, titled 'Yoga Sangam', in collaboration with the Meghalaya Raj Bhavan at the convention hall of North Eastern Hills University here at 7 am on Saturday.
The Ri Bhoi District Yogasana Sports Association, in collaboration with the Yoga Cell of Ri Bhoi College, held events on the college campus on Friday.
Additional DC Ayushi Pradhan, in her address, said yoga is not merely a physical activity but a form of exercise that promotes holistic health. She added that yoga, recognised and practised globally, offers immense benefits for physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall lifestyle. "Health is true wealth in our lives," she added, underlining the importance of incorporating yoga into daily routines for long-term wellness.
The office of the district social welfare officer and district sankalp organised International Day of Yoga celebrations on Friday at St Xavier's Higher Secondary School at Tura, where 120 students participated. The celebration was held earlier as schools would be closed on Saturday. Senior physiotherapist at Tura Civil Hospital, Sujata Das, explained to the students various yoga postures and highlighted the importance of yoga in daily life, particularly in reducing stress.
Brand Ambassador for 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', Shano Chelsea Sangma, also emphasized the significance of yoga in her address to the students.
District Social Welfare Officer, Tura, Madonna Onasis T Sangma said that the main objective of the event was to promote a healthy lifestyle and mental well-being among the students.

On International Yoga Day, here are some practical tips gleaned from the work of Shri Yogendraji Most of us associate Yoga with fitness and flexibility though that understanding barely scratches the surface. Shri Yogendra ji was the founder of the world's oldest organised Yoga centre—The Yoga Institute, Mumbai (est. 1918)—and devoted his life to showing that Yoga is not merely about the external body, but about inner health and living a balanced life. A householder Yogi, he simplified Yoga for people with work and family responsibilities. He was one of the first to apply Yoga scientifically—introducing Yoga therapy, exploring the impact of Yoga practices on the body, and even setting up a branch of the institute in the US. As we celebrate the 11th International Yoga Day today—themed One World, One Health—it's worth revisiting some of the whats, whys and hows of Yoga. Here are curated insights from the voluminous writings of Shri Yogendra ji.* 1. In Yoga, the Nervous System is of Paramount Importance. All practices aim at control, purification and strengthening of the nervous system—and not muscular display and strength. In Yoga, the body is only an instrument of education for the mind. Through Yoga's scientific training, all voluntary and major involuntary functions of the body can be brought under direct control of the will. 2. Yoga & The Body's Inner Functioning. Yoga has specific techniques that help manipulate the endocrine glands, as well as regulate blood supply to any part including vital organs like heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. 3. Yoga Is Gentler on Digestion Than Strenuous Exercise. During intense workouts, normal supply of blood gets diverted to the muscles and away from the digestive system. Yoga's effect on the digestive system is more beneficial than strenuous exercise because it does not deprive it of blood supply. 4. Prolonged, Rhythmic Breathing Improves Respiratory Efficiency. Increased oxygen in the blood during Yoga exercise gives richer blood to all other systems of the body. 5. Yoga Energises; It Does Not Exhaust. A well-regulated exercise should impart a sense of wellbeing and lightness. All movement must be practised lightly — and stop short of actual fatigue. Relax whenever fatigue sets in. This will minimise strain on the nervous system, as the perfect health of this system is the aim of most of Yoga. 6. Exercising Muscles of the Spine is Very Important. The small, deep extensor muscles along the spine hold the trunk and other parts, maintaining the natural posture for efficient functioning. This is why Yoga especially emphasises exercising the spinal column—through vertical, lateral, anterior, posterior, and torsional stretches. 7. The Right Amount of Yoga is 25–30 Minutes A Day. Sheer excess may cause changes in the muscles of the heart. Moderation in exercise is strongly recommended in Yoga. The standard daily dose of Yoga should be 25-30 minutes. Regularity (Abhyasa) is the cornerstone of success. 8. Mornings are Ideal for Asana Practice. Mornings, before breakfast, are best suited for Yoga exercise as vitality is highest and the movements can be performed with ease, freshness, vigour, and mental calmness. If that is not possible, evening before dinner is ideal, unless you are tired. In that case, relaxation poses are to be given priority. Ideally, first evacuate the bladder and bowels, clean the nose and throat of mucus, and drink a glass of room-temperature water. Then, after 15 minutes, begin Yoga exercise. 9. Don't Skip Yoga During Winter Months. Of all seasons, Yoga poses have to be done zealously and regularly in winter. This is to maintain normal circulation and to keep the blood warm for good health. 10. For People Above 80, Pranayama is the Best Yoga. Yoga exercises may be gradually omitted as they tend to strain the muscles that become inelastic with age. However, for those advised to curtail physical exercises, doing more of Pranayama practices gives promising results. This International Yoga Day, we can draw from Shri Yogendra ji's legacy to make Yoga not just a practice, but a way of balanced living. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 11th International Yoga Day, the national event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. With this year's theme being "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," PM Modi spoke about the importance of Yoga for the world while highlighting how it may bring inner peace and a beginning of humanity 2.0 amid geopolitical tensions. PM Modi expressed joy over global participation in Yoga, emphasising its role in connecting people across the world. 'I extend my greetings to the people from across the world on this occasion of International Yoga Day. Today, the entire world is performing Yoga. Yoga simply means to add, and it is an immense pleasure to see how Yoga has connected the entire world,' ANI quoted PM Modi. PM Modi said that Yoga can promote peace amid the ongoing conflicts across the globe. 'Unfortunately, today the entire world is going through some tension, unrest, and instability have been increasing in many regions. In such times, Yoga gives us the direction of peace. Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again,' ANI quoted PM Modi. PM Modi urged that Yoga must be the beginning for humanity 2.0, promoting global inner peace. "My request to the world, let this Yoga day mark the beginning of Yoga for humanity 2.0 where inner peace becomes global policy," he said. PM Modi stated how Yoga serves as a personal discipline and encourages a shift from individuality to community, offering a vital pause for humanity to find balance and completeness. "Yoga is a great personal discipline, also a system that takes people from "Me to We" and is the pause button that humanity needs to breath, balance to become whole again," he said. Explaining the International Yoga Day theme for this year, PM Modi was quoted saying, 'The theme of this year's International Day of Yoga is 'Yoga For One Earth, For One Health'. This theme reflects a deep truth: the health of every entity on Earth is interconnected.' He further added, 'Human well-being depends on the health of the soil that grows our food, the rivers that give us water, the health of the animals that share our ecosystems, and the plants that nourish us. Yoga awakens us to this interconnectedness, leads us on a journey towards oneness with the world, and teaches us that we are not isolated individuals but part of nature.' Additionally, PM Modi participated in a Yoga session during the celebrations in Vishakapatnam. Speaking on how the world has accepted Yoga in the last few years, PM Modi said, 'In the last one decade, when I see the journey of Yoga, it reminds me of many things. The day India put forth a resolution in the UNGA - to recognise June 21 as International Yoga Day- and in a very short time, 175 countries of the world stood with our country. This unity and support in today's world is not a normal incident.' PM Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of Yoga in science and research.'For the expansion of Yoga in the world, India is empowering the science of Yoga through modern research... We are also encouraging evidence-based therapy in the field of Yoga,' he said. Highlighting the role of Yoga to treat critical illnesses, PM Modi said, 'Delhi AIIMS has done a good research has shown that yoga has a critical role in the treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, and it also plays an important role in women's health and mental health.' PM Narendra Modi further said, 'I feel proud when I see that our Divyang friends study Yoga Shastras in Braille. Scientists practice Yoga in space. Young friends participate in the Yoga Olympiads in villages. An excellent yoga program is being performed on all these Navy ships. Be it the stairs of the Opera House, the peak of Everest, or the sea's expanse - the same message comes from everywhere. Yoga is for everyone, beyond boundaries, background, and ability.' Advocating for a worldwide movement through yoga, PM Modi said, "Come, let us all together make Yoga a mass movement. A movement that takes the world towards peace, health and harmony. Where every person starts the day with yoga and finds balance in life. Where every society is connected to yoga and free from stress. Where yoga becomes the medium to bind humanity together. New Delhi: On the occasion of the 11th International Day of Yoga, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in a large-scale yoga session at Sonia Vihar Water Sports Club, located near the banks of the Yamuna River. The event witnessed the presence of several prominent leaders, including Minister Parvesh Verma, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, Minister Kapil Mishra, and Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly Mohan Singh Bisht. Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered early in the morning to take part in the session, held in the scenic backdrop of the Yamuna. The Chief Minister used the moment to emphasise the connection between well-being, nature, and civic responsibility. Speaking at the session, CM Rekha Gupta said, 'I was reminded of my sense of duty. Just as the Yamuna flows continuously here, it should appear the same throughout Delhi wherever the Yamuna passes, with even more water flowing in it.' The event was one of several organised across Delhi as part of the nationwide 'Yoga Sangam' initiative. In Thyagaraj Stadium, Minister Parvesh Verma led another well-attended yoga session. Minister Ashish Sood performed yoga at Chhatrasal Stadium, while the Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar hosted a lively morning of 'asanas' and meditation. At Qutub Minar, one of Delhi's most iconic heritage sites, a mass yoga demonstration drew a large and diverse crowd, further reflecting the day's theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.' These events formed part of the broader national celebration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Visakhapatnam, where more than one lakh locations across the country hosted synchronised yoga sessions involving over 2 crore people. Now in its 11th year, International Day of Yoga has evolved into a global phenomenon. The day is observed across continents and cultures, and India continues to play a pivotal role in promoting mindfulness, discipline, and sustainable living through the practice of yoga. The 2025 theme, 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health,' has further emphasised the connection between personal well-being and planetary health, aligning with India's broader vision of global harmony through traditional wisdom.
