
PARAMOUNT+ IN CANADA ANNOUNCES THE PINK PILL, AN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE FIGHT FOR A FEMALE VIAGRA
BANFF, AB and TORONTO, June 9, 2025 /CNW/ -- Paramount+ in Canada today announced it will be the exclusive Canadian home of THE PINK PILL, the untold story of the fight for a female Viagra and equal access to sexual medicine. Billed by producers as "a wildly entertaining romp into the world of sex and science," the original documentary feature is set to debut on Paramount+ in Canada in fall 2025.
Created by Abby Greensfelder's Everywoman Studios, THE PINK PILL explores the taboo subject of women's sexual health through the lens of the trailblazers — and opponents — who have fought relentlessly against the male-focused medical establishment to make female pleasure a priority. The film reveals the many ways women have been sidelined when it comes to their enjoyment of sex, including the story of a libido-boosting solution, or a 'little pink pill', for women facing endless roadblocks in a market saturated with FDA-approved drugs for men's sexual pleasure — but almost nothing for women.
THE PINK PILL is directed by award-winning Montreal-based filmmaker Aisling Chin-Yee (No Ordinary Man, The Rest of Us, Plan B) who brings her astute creative vision to this first project from Docs for Change, a collaboration between Catalyst, the Toronto-based studio for woman-identifying creators, and Knix Fund, a philanthropic arm of the game-changing intimates brand Knix. Launched at the 2023 Banff World Media Festival, the initiative supports the development and production of women-centric feature documentaries that embody the principles at the core of both the Knix and Catalyst brands: to create more opportunities for women by amplifying their voices and inspiring change.

Canadian director Dean DeBlois brings animated How to Train Your Dragon to vibrant life
Article content When Dean DeBlois was told that DreamWorks was considering turning the beloved How to Train Your Dragon animated series into a live-action movie, he thought that his words might come back to haunt him. Article content The Canadian filmmaker had previously told people that he was not a fan of live-action remakes. DeBlois thought he had closed the chapter on the Dragon franchise. He co-wrote and co-directed the 2010 animated original and its two sequels, turning the tale of a Viking teen named Hiccup who forms a bond with a young dragon named Toothless into a beloved and lucrative franchise. He received his fourth Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film in 2020 for the second sequel, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and had moved on to imagining other worlds. But when the prospect of a live-action version came up, he suddenly felt very protective. Article content Article content Turning an animated favourite into a live-action film isn't new, and many have been box-office hits. But recent live-action remakes, including Tim Burton's Dumbo or Guy Ritchie's Aladdin, received mixed reviews despite being in the hands of A-list directors. The live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, released a few months ago, received some scathing reviews. Article content Article content 'My first response was 'OK, I'm going to eat my words,' ' says DeBlois, who was born and raised in Aylmer, Que., before attending Toronto's Sheridan College's prestigious animation program in the late 1980s. 'I had been saying that I was not a fan of this trend, and here it was happening to my movie. I felt a very protective instinct, just knowing where the heart is and knowing the characters and the world so well. I said, 'I know I haven't made a live-action movie, but would you please consider me as the writer-director? I pledge and promise to bring forward the sense of wonder and emotion that comes from that original, so it doesn't end up as yet another soulless remake.' Article content Article content It's true DeBlois did not have a lot of live-action experience – although he did make the 2007 documentary Heima, about the band Sigur Ros – but it's hard to argue with his success in the world of animation. His directorial debut, alongside Chris Sanders, was 2002's Lilo & Stitch. It received an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature, as did How to Train Your Dragon and its two sequels. Article content The live-action version, which opens Friday, is not a scene-for-scene remake of the original, but it's closer to its source material than the 2010 original is to British author Cressida Cowell's series of children's books that it was loosely based on. Article content When Sanders and DeBlois were asked to adapt Cowell's first book, Dreamworks had already made a few failed attempts to develop a film more faithful to the book. They were given a good deal of creative freedom in interpreting the story. Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was CEO of DreamWorks at the time, gave the two filmmakers three mandates and a tight deadline of 15 months. Fifteen months may seem like a long time, but it probably seemed like a split-second when compared to the long gestation period given to most big-budget animated films.

Now for some background: It goes back to June 2 when Chow was at the Pride Parade flag raising in Nathan Phillips Square. She said 'don't shop at Home Depot' in retaliation for them decide to not sponsor this year's event. As reported originally by the Toronto Sun's Brian Lilley, Chow said 'don't shop at Home Depot' and 'shop Canadian, shop Rona, yeah, yes, yes. We are not the 51st state. Are you kidding? We are proud Torontonians, right?' As Lilley pointed out, it was a terrible thing to say for many reasons including that Home Depot employs thousands of Canadians, pays copious amounts of corporate and local taxes, and displays many Canadian products. It was unbecoming of any politician to say something like that just because a company decided to go in a different direction on its sponsorships. Home Depot has always been supportive of the Pride Parade and still does so in other jurisdictions. Rona is also a great company, but is not Canadian owned. What the mayor said sends a chill through the business community in Toronto which, like Home Depot, have big investments in our city.' Instead, she denied something that's a matter of public record.' Chow did not return a request for comment on how she rationalized that saying to people not to shop at Home Depot is not the same as calling for a boycott. Bradford said this does not just make her look bad but Toronto as well. 'The mayor is effectively the CEO of the city. Comments like this serve to chase away investment and jobs from Toronto. This isn't just about 'love local, shop local' — it's about honesty, accountability, and standing up for every Torontonian.' Home Depot so far has not commented. Why would they dignify any of it? For the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, when she didn't attend the vigil attended by most everybody else in politics, her staff told the Toronto Sun that she didn't receive her invitation – something that was easy to later show ad been sent to her.
