Football: India lose 0-2 to Thailand in friendly

Hindustan Times6 days ago

Kolkata: The hope is that even if they cannot be as clinical as Thailand, India will do better in the front third against Hong Kong in the Asian Cup qualifying game next week. And will not be overrun in midfield like they were till around the 30-minute mark against Thailand at Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani, around 50km from Bangkok, on Wednesday.
Should that happen, this 0-2 defeat in the FIFA International Friendly, India's first since the underwhelming 0-0 draw against Bangladesh, will be the kind of outing that helps shake off rust. For, against a team most of whose players were on club duty till Saturday, rusty India looked.
There was hesitation in the back where, due to injury and suspension, Sandesh Jhingan and Anwar Ali were teaming up for the first time since the 2024 Asian Cup. India were tentative in all areas of the pitch to start with and rare is it that a top-100 team will not punish that.
Benjamin Davies did in the eighth minute. Easily the most skilful player on the pitch, the 24-year-old forward ran in to fire Thailand ahead. Lalengmawia Ralte was down in the penalty box and Thailand could have stopped play. Maybe India thought they would. As it turned out, India failed to clear their lines and, following a neat exchange between Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul and Korawich Tasa which drew out Ali, Davies fired home.
What followed was a spell where India were overrun in the midfield but stayed in the contest through desperate clearances and Thailand not being able to find the target. Once, Davies twisted and turned past Abhishek Singh and Liston Colaco before Ali made the block.
Thailand were expertly drawing India out and activating the wide men till Abhishek became the extra player in midfield. From a Colaco free-kick, Sunil Chhetri had tested Saranon Anuin with a header but it wasn't till the 33rd minute that India could stitch together a move that pulled the seams of Thailand's defence. That was when Lalengmawia Ralte found Colaco who laid it for Ashique Kurnuniyan, who snatched at the shot.
Ashish Rai managed a teasing cross but India should have made it 1-1 before half-time. They had stopped a Thailand move and got Chhetri to find Colaco through on goal with only Anuin to beat. The goalie got big and legged out Colaco's effort.
India began the second half like they had ended the first with Kuruniyan, used a second striker, finding Chhetri, who was visibly upset that his appeal for a penalty was turned down. There were free headers that Jhingan and Ali could not keep on target from corner-kicks (India had eight, Thailand two) and a bender from Lallianzuala Chhangte that, well, didn't bend enough. Suhail Bhatt also broke through once but could not sort out his feet.
Both teams had three shots on target but India had attempted 19, Thailand seven. Poramet Arjvilai made it 2-0 with a superb curler from range after Davies had found him. The move stemmed from a poor pass from Manvir Singh when India were on the attack. He was not the only one guilty of that. India then needed interceptions from Rai and Ali and a reflex save from Vishal Kaith to prevent a rout. 'The biggest lesson from this game is that we need to take our chances,' said skipper Jhingan.

India set to take on Hong Kong in AFC Asian Cup qualifier clash

Kowloon (Hong Kong), June 9 (UNI) India will take on Hong Kong, China on Matchday 2 in Group C of the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers Final Round on Tuesday, at the Kai Tak Stadium here at 17:30 IST. The Group C table is still a clean slate with all four teams level on a point apiece after both games on Matchday 1 on March 25 ended goalless. India and Bangladesh drew in Shillong, while Hong Kong also got a point away to Singapore. Only the group winners will qualify for the Asian Cup in 2027. India, who made it to two successive Asian Cups for the first time in 2023, are aiming to extend the historic streak. Hong Kong also qualified for the previous tournament, but with only one available berth, either side is bound to miss out. India head coach Manolo Marquez exuded confidence on the eve of the Blue Tigers' clash against Hong Kong. 'Our preparations have been much better this time, if we compare with the previous FIFA windows, where you practically don't have too much time. We had about three weeks to prepare, between Kolkata, Bangkok, and here in Hong Kong. And we are ready to perform. Nothing special,' said Marquez. 'The environment in the team is quite good as well. Obviously, in all teams across the world, the environment is better when you are winning games constantly. But the environment, the relationship between the players, regardless of the results, is very good,' he said. India centre-back Konsham Chinglensana Singh echoed the coach's words. 'We are well prepared for the game after three weeks in the camp. Mentally, and physically, we have prepared well, and are ready for the game,' he said. The Blue Tigers have not had the rub of the green in recent times. Out of the three matches they have played in 2025 so far, they have won one, drawn one, and lost their last match against Thailand last week. Márquez, however, is not too worried about the 0-2 defeat against Thailand. 'In my opinion, most coaches are not worried about the scores in the friendly games. We are focussing on the important match (Hong Kong),' he said. 'I know everyone speaks about the score (against Thailand). But if we scored from the chances we created, it would have been different. This is football.' In what will be the inaugural football match at the newly built 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium, the tickets, reportedly, have sold out, and a full house can be expected on Tuesday. The stadium features a retractable roof, which will be kept closed during the match. On Monday, the Blue Tigers had an official training session at the venue to get a feel of the conditions. 'We will try to enjoy the situation in this stadium. I don't know if it will be completely full, but a lot of people will be there. It will be a nice event, but obviously, we are focusing on winning the game,' said Marquez. Hong Kong, China's head coach, Ashley Westwood, is no stranger to Indian football, having coached clubs like Bengaluru FC, ATK, and Punjab FC in India before taking up international coaching roles, first in Afghanistan, followed by Hong Kong. Westwood spoke highly of the development that Indian football has seen over the years. 'I went to India in 2013, and the country is a million miles away from where it was back then. I know their coach, I watched the ISL. He's a good coach, and he's been doing good things with FC Goa. He coaches right, he prepares right, and his players are always fit. 'The spirit's good in the squad, and everybody gets on with each other. We're looking forward to it,' he said. Hong Kong midfielder Ngan Cheuk Pan stressed on the importance for his teammates and him to focus on their own game, for the clash against India. 'We're following the tactics set by the coach and focusing on what we can do to improve our own performance. We want to be able to play our own game,' he said. India and Hong Kong, China have crossed swords 24 times. The Blue Tigers have won nine of these matches, while the hosts for Tuesday's game have won eight; seven matches have ended in draws. The match will be streamed live on FanCode. UNI BM

BJP minority cell to publicise Operation Sindoor; reach out to Muslims

'The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minority cell will hold outreach meetings outside religious sites such as dargahs, mosques, madrasas, churches and gurdwaras across the State to publicise the success of Operation Sindoor and welfare schemes for minorities,' a party leader said on Tuesday (June 10, 2025.) 'The party will launch the campaign from tomorrow with distribution of pocket-sized copies of the Constitution to raise awareness among minorities about their rights and duties,' Uttar Pradesh BJP minority cell president Kunwar Basit Ali told PTI. 'Also, conventions under the banner 'Alpsankhyakon ka Paigam, Modi ke Saath Musalman' will be held across all major cities in the State to mark 11 years of the Narendra Modi government,' he said. The first such event will take place on June 12 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Convention Centre in Lucknow. Mr. Ali said the cell will also conduct a programme, 'Desh ka Paigam, Pratibha ko Samman,' to felicitate madrasa students who have excelled academically. The party will also felicitate relatives of those who died in the line of duty. "It is a significant step towards building trust-based politics with minorities," he said. The party is slated to organise yoga events in 403 madrasas of Uttar Pradesh on International Yoga Day (June 21). Mr. Ali also drew a contrast between former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remark "Muslims have the first claim on resources" and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's view that "the poor have the first right on the country's resources." He said the Sachar Committee had exposed the dire socio-economic condition of Muslims, which remained unaddressed under previous governments. "Despite immense poverty in the Muslim community, Prime Minister Modi has ensured the benefits of his welfare schemes reach them. Muslims constitute about 20% of the population, but they account for nearly 40% of the beneficiaries of government welfare programmes," Mr. Ali said.
