'Sadistic' man convicted of child rape
A "perverted and sadistic" man who sexually abused a child has been convicted of rape.
Humberside Police said Connor Laud subjected an "innocent and helpless child to what can only be described as sickening abuse to fulfil his sexual desires".
The 27-year-old, of Tenterden Close, Hull, denied four charges but was found guilty on 15 May of all four offences following a trial at Grimsby Crown Court.
He has been remanded into custody until 19 June, when he is due to appear at the same court for sentencing.
Police launched their inquiries after receiving a report of the abuse, which had been disclosed by the child.
Following his arrest, Laud claimed the child "must have become confused" and he denied having a sexual interest in children, detectives said.
He pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Det Con Gayle Allwood described the offender as "a perverted and sadistic man".
She added: "I'd like to praise the child and their family for their sheer bravery.
"I cannot begin to comprehend how they have felt throughout the entirety of this investigation and court proceedings."
She urged other victims of sexual crimes to report them to police.
"We take reports of sexual offences extremely seriously and we will continue to seek justice for those who have suffered at the hands of predators," she added.

Boy and three men arrested after knife incident
Four people have been arrested following a violent incident in Knottingley. Police were called to Yew Tree Walk at about 18:50 BST on Friday, following reports of a dispute involving several males, one of whom was reported to have a bladed weapon. Two arrested after man shot at from car
Two men have been arrested after a pedestrian was shot at from a car. Thames Valley Police said the victim, a man aged in his 30s, was targeted on Broad Street in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, at about 18:10 BST on Tuesday before a silver coloured VW Scirocco was driven from the scene. The car was later found burned out in Rickmansworth at about 22:00. The victim suffered injuries to his shoulder and was taken to hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening and he has since been discharged. A 31-year-old man from Chalfont St Gile has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, while a 37-year-old man from Chesham has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. Officers said that both men remain in police custody. Det Insp Phil Turner-Robson said: "I would again appeal for anyone in the area who saw or heard anything; if you have any footage from the area and haven't already spoken to the police, we would urge you to please come forward." University student jailed for raping child
A university student has been jailed for 14 years after admitting repeatedly raping a child. David Thorne, 22, pleaded guilty to eight sexual offences, including five rape charges involving a child aged under 13. Lincoln Crown Court heard that Thorne, who is studying policing, travelled to Grantham in Lincolnshire to meet the girl. Thorne had claimed the girl told him she was 17, but his evidence was dismissed by the court at a Newton Hearing – which seeks to determine the truth when two sides give conflicting evidence. Giving evidence, the girl insisted she told Thorne her real age and said it was Thorne who claimed to be 17. All the offences took place over three days in December 2023. The court was told Thorne, an Army cadet leader, wore his uniform during one of his visits to see the girl. Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hirst said he had "no hesitation" in accepting the victim's account of events. In a victim impact statement read out in court, the girl said: "The crime made me angry and upset. "I feel very sad, especially when I'm on my own." Thorne, of New Crescent in Cherry Willingham, was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will have to serve an extended period of 12 months on licence when he is released from custody. A restraining order will also prevent Thorne having further contact with his victim. Det Con Victoria Oakes praised the girl for her bravery and courage. "Thorne's actions are reprehensible and completely unacceptable in our society. His victim was clearly underage, and he knew that," she said. "Instead, he chose to plead ignorance and I am glad that the judge dismissed his claims."
