Peter DeBoer sealed fate with Stars after unbecoming response to ill-fated decision

New York Post5 hours ago

It wasn't all that long ago Paul Maurice was kind of on a Peter DeBoer career track as a recognized recyclable behind the bench, but slightly less successful.
Now, Maurice, who won the Stanley Cup last year in Florida on his fifth team after having coached 1,849 regular-season games, has become Yoda.
Though DeBoer doused himself with gasoline and self-immolated in Dallas after a third consecutive conference finals defeat — in which the coach humiliated franchise goaltender Jake Oettinger after pulling him 7:09 into a do-or-die Game 5 because the Oilers had scored twice on two uncontested shots, then pointed the finger at him in the post-mortem.

There was no world in which the coach was going to be able to return and command the room after that. The decision to pull Oettinger in favor of Casey DeSmith was preposterous, and the postgame doubling-down on it was unbecoming.

Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals was named the winner of the 2024-25 Jack Adams Award on Saturday. The honor is presented to the NHL coach who is judged to have made the biggest contribution to a team's success. While attending what he thought was a season-ending interview, the 43-year-old Carbery was presented with the award by his wife, Casey, and their children, Hudson and Vivian. "Wow, I had no idea," a clearly stunned and choked-up Carbery said. If that weren't emotional enough for Carbery, extended family members from throughout the U.S. and Canada also were there to share in the moment. Carbery led the Capitals to a 51-22-9 (111 points) record this season as the team finished first in the Eastern Conference in his second season as Washington's coach. He got strong seasons out of a host of new players who were acquired in the offseason and improved on the team's offensive and defensive numbers. He kept the team winning while eventual all-time leading goal Alex Ovechkin missed 16 games with a broken leg. Carbery becomes the fourth coach in franchise history to win the award, joining Bryan Murray (1983-84), Bruce Boudreau (2007-08) and Barry Trotz (2015-16). He is also the first person recognized as coach of the year in the ECHL, American Hockey League and NHL. The members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association select the Jack Adams winner. NHL AWARDS FINALISTS: Who's up for the major trophies? Carbery received 81 first-place votes on the 103 ballots cast and finished with 464 points. Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets had 249 points, followed by Martin St. Louis of the Montreal Canadiens with 66. The Capitals lost in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. Oilers sign a top young attacker from Finland's top league

This in from the Oilers, news they have signed The forward Viljami Marjala to a two-year entry-level contract. 1. Marjala finished 14th overall in Liiga scoring in Finland. Top scorer Atro Leppanen had 63 points in 60 games. Marjala had 52 in 54, with 44 of the points coming on assists. The Oilers already signed Leppanen, a 26-year-old d-man, in late April. 2. In the summer of 2021, Greg Boysen of the Hockey Writers said of Marjala: 'While Marjala is a strong skater, he does not have game-changing speed by any means. Even though he didn't shoot as much with Quebec as he previously had, he still has a heavy and accurate shot. He prefers to shoot from in close than taking low-percentage shots. His playmaking is what turns heads. He uses his vision and enhanced instincts to create scoring chances for his teammates. Marjala plays a smart and responsible defensive game. He understands his role and positions himself well on the ice. He plays much better than his listed 178 pounds. He battles hard for pucks and uses his body well to establish positioning on defense and protecting the puck when it's in his possession.' But Bruce Curlock, the prospects expert at Oilers Nation, has his doubts about the player: I don't see this much more than an AHL roster spot. This is a very good playmaking forward with decent size, but his skating and change of pace are very slow. Smart no question. However I think he gets overwhelmed by AHL players with size and speed.' 3. Puckpedia reports his contract as follows: 'The Oilers signed 22 y/o UFA F Viljami Marjala to 2 year ELC: Salary 775K Signing Bonus 97.5K GP Bonus 102.5K Minors 85K Cap Hit 872.5K, AAV 975K' 4. Bowman has made a number of signings, scoring winger Quinn Hutson from Boston University, puck-moving d-man Damien Carfagna from Ohio State University: Leppanen, big skilled German forward Josh Samanski, 23, and and top-scoring Czech center David Tomasek, 29, from the Swedish league. The team will need a steady stream of inexpensive players who can work for the Oilers on the third and fourth lines and third d-man pairings. Will any of these players pan out. If one of them does, Bowman will have done his job.
