Thug Life Row Reaches SC, Plea Challenging Ban On Kamal Haasan's Film To Be Heard

Last Updated: During the film's audio launch, Kamal Haasan claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil', sparking strong reactions in Karnataka. The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on June 13 a plea challenging Karnataka's 'ban" on the screening of Thug Life, a film by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam and superstar Kamal Haasan. Initially, a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan questioned the petitioner for directly filing a petition before the top court and asked as to why he did not approach the Karnataka High Court. In response, advocate A. Valan, representing Bengaluru's M. Mahesh Reddy, stated that the Karnataka HC has sought an apology from Kamal Haasan. After much persuasion, the apex court agreed to hear the matter on Friday. During the film's audio launch, Kamal Haasan claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil", sparking strong reactions in Karnataka. Following the controversy, the Karnataka HC suggested that the actor-politician issue an apology, but he has refused to do so. As a result of the actor's refusal to issue an outright apology, the film's release in Karnataka has been postponed indefinitely. Last week, Kamal Haasan wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce stating that the row over his remarks on the origins of the Kannada language is a result of a misunderstanding. In his letter, the superstar also maintained that he is against the dominance of one language over another. Despite the controversy, Thug Life is one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. The project marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades, following their legendary 1987 collaboration 'Nayakan", considered a milestone in Indian cinema. The gangster drama features a star-studded cast, including Silambarasan T.R. in a key role, alongside Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal. Thug Life is a joint production of Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. First Published:

'Thug Life' box office collection Day 5: Kamal Haasan sees collections from on first Monday; film makes it past Rs 40 crore mark

Thug Life, the film that marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam nearly four decades after Nayakan, crossed the Rs 40 crore mark at the Indian box office on its fifth day. However, despite a strong opening, the film is now facing a sharp decline in collections. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the action-drama earned just Rs 3.25 crore on Monday, its lowest single-day total so far. The dip marks a significant slowdown in momentum following an opening day collection of Rs 15.5 crore on Thursday. Mixed Response Dampens Growth Starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR , and Trisha Krishnan , Thug Life generated massive pre-release buzz. But post-release, the film has received a mixed critical reception, which appears to be impacting its box office performance. While initial turnout was promising, weekend numbers failed to show growth, and Monday's earnings confirmed the declining trend. Tamil Version Leads Revenue The total box office collection now stands at Rs 40.01 crore, with the Tamil version contributing the bulk of earnings. On Monday, Tamil occupancy stood at just 17.21%, suggesting a waning audience interest. Controversy in Karnataka The film's release has also been marred by controversy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Eat 1 Teaspoon Every Night, See What Happens A Week Later [Video] getfittoday Undo Kamal Haasan's recent remark suggesting that Kannada originated from Tamil sparked backlash, leading to the film's cancellation in Karnataka. Haasan did not issue an apology, and the lack of release in the state has reportedly further impacted overall earnings. Thug Life follows the story of a betrayed mafia leader who embarks on a brutal quest for revenge. The ensemble cast includes Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Rohit Saraf. As the film enters its second week, all eyes are on whether Thug Life can stabilise or if the initial buzz has already fizzled out. With upcoming releases on the horizon, the pressure is now on for the film to hold its ground at the box office. Thug Life | Song - Vinveli Nayaga (Lyrical)
