Hot Plate Brewing Co. of Pittsfield named finalist in USA Today's ‘Best New Brewery'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Pittsfield's Hot Plate Brewing Co., the only Latina-owned brewery in Massachusetts, has been named as a finalist in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for Best New Brewery.
Hot Plate Brewing Co. opened in downtown Pittsfield in February 2023 and has grown regionally and nationally since then. Co-founders Sarah Real and Mike Dell'Aquila began traveling the world crafting beer in the early 2000s, discovering the concept of brewing on a hot plate when the gas to their Brooklyn condo was turned off.

Head brewer and owner Real, who was recently elected to the Massachusetts Brewers Guild and Pink Boots Society Boards of Directors, said this recognition is especially meaningful for diverse voices.
'For years, I didn't see myself reflected in the brewhouse or in most leadership positions at other breweries,' Real said. 'And while I know how much representation matters, I also wanted to make sure that I'm empowering and supporting other marginalized people in this industry, which is why we have a mostly female and mostly queer staff, and why so many of the vendors I work with are also small, local, and women-owned.'
Local organizations such as Mass Econ, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Berkshire Pride, and Berkshire County have awarded the brewery for its work within the community. Hot Plate has also raised over $10,000 for non-profit organizations, such as the Pittsfield Area Council of Congregations.
'Even though we're new to the Berkshires, we're incredibly proud of the partnerships we've formed here with mission-aligned organizations and individuals. We've been able to make a measurable difference in this city,' Dell'Aquila said.

Mass. officials support local farms during National Dairy Month

SHEFFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Members of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) celebrated National Dairy Month by recognizing several dairy farms in western Mass. MDAR Commissioner Ashley Randle was joined by state and local officials last week in visiting three multi-generational businesses in Berkshire and Hampshire County. These farms have contributed to the state's economy and local food systems for decades. Easthampton aims to enhance transparency with new public records management 'As a western Massachusetts native who grew up on a multi-generational dairy farm, I have a deep appreciation and understanding of how hard our dairy farmers work to supply us with the best tasting products that are made with pride, so we are proud to continue supporting the industry through the many resources our agency offers,' Randle said. 'Through preserving land to offering technical assistance and upgrading infrastructure, we'll continue to invest in the viability and sustainability of this critical sector so that all of us can continue to enjoy a rich assortment of delicious dairy products made by family farms across the state.' Officials visited Pine Island Farm and Maple Shade Farm, both located in Sheffield, as well as Luther Belden Farm in Hatfield. Pine Island Farm spans over 1,500 acres and houses approximately 1,600 Holstein cattle, milking the largest number of animals in Massachusetts. It is a third-generation farm owned by Holly and Louis Aragi and was recently acquired through MDAR's Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) program to protect the land permanently. Maple Shade Farm is also protected through the APR program, managed by father and son Morgen and Ian Allen. It was first founded in 2003 with a handful of cows and has since grown to nearly 350 cattle, implementing energy efficiency upgrades. Since 1661, Luther Belden Farm has stayed within the same family across 13 generations. Darryl and Lucinda Williams have added modern upgrades to this over 350-year-old farm, including a robotic milking system and an anaerobic methane digester that produces renewable energy from cow manure and food waste. Massachusetts is currently home to 95 dairy farms that are mostly based in the western region, contributing over $61 million to the local economy and helping to preserve over 113,000 acres of open space. This National Dairy Month, officials are recognizing family-owned businesses that protect natural resources and reduce energy use throughout the state. Walmart analysts reboot stock price targets on credit card deal

Look up, look down, Walmart (WMT) is all around. First, we'll go high. The world's largest retailer, which has a store within 10 miles of 90% of the U.S. popuation, recently said it would expand its drone delivery service through Alphabet-owned (GOOGL) Wing. The expansion will reach customers from 100 stores in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando and Tampa within the coming year. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter With the expansion, Walmart's drone deliveries will be available in five states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. "As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail," Greg Cathey, senior vice president of Walmart U.S. Transformation and Innovation, said in a statement. Meanwhile, the "Tonight Show"'s Jimmy Fallon hosted Walmart's annual meeting, which also included such musical acts as the Killers, Noah Kahan, Camila Cabello and Post Malone. Walton Goggins, who is appearing in Walmart's new ad campaign, and Chris Paul, guard for the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, also showed up. "Walmart is No. 1, so shove it, Target," Fallon sang, digging at one of the company's key rivals. "There is no place I would rather be on Friday at 8 a.m." Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon told the audience that the company wanted "to be a lab of opportunity," the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported. Bloomberg/Getty Images "The real magic happens with the combination of our people and technology," he said. ""We love people and we embrace change." That's scheduled to go live in the fall. OnePay, which Walmart created in 2021 with the venture firm Ribbit Capital, will handle the customer experience for the card program through its mobile app. In 2023, Walmart sued Capital One to end their credit card partnership early, alleging that McLean, Va., financial services company was not fulfilling its contractual obligations. A federal judge ruled in Walmart's favor, but Capital One was evaluating its right to appeal. The companies settled last year and the lawsuit was dismissed. The Walmart card program had 10 million customers and roughly $8.5 billion in loans outstanding last year, when the partnership with Capital One ended, according to Fitch Ratings. TD Cowen noted that Synchrony would not purchase the existing Walmart card portfolio from Capital One (COF) , so this new program will have to be built from scratch, according to The Fly. Similar to any new portfolio, TD Cowen said, it will likely be dilutive to holders at first, as Synchrony will need to build reserves, the analyst tells investors. However, while the investment firm said it would need more details from the Bentonville, Ark., retailer, the fact that Walmart, via OnePay, decided to come back to Synchrony indicates "favorable negotiating position/economics" for Synchrony in this deal. It views the plan as a positive for the financial services group. TD Cowen has a buy rating and $68 price target on Synchrony shares. RBC Capital raised its price target on Walmart to $103 from $102 and affirmed an outperform rating on the shares. Having attended the company's Annual Associates & Shareholders Week meeting, the investment firm said management's tone and messaging were consistent with the Q1 earnings call in mid-May. Management said it was working on an artificial-intelligence-enabled offering that will reorder core grocery items when they're running low. The company is working to leverage AI to pair consumer-purchases data and smart-fridge technology, the firm said. KeyBanc raised its price target on Walmart to $110 from $105 and maintained an overweight rating after the annual meeting. The firm came away incrementally positive on Walmart's ability to drive share gains in 2025 and beyond; growth of e-commerce and advertising; and Walmart's ability to grow operating profit faster than sales over a multiyear horizon. Importantly, KeyBanc said that it continues to believe Walmart's digital business is exhibiting flywheel characteristics, where growth should drive additional growth. While it still sees potential risks to consumer spending as the Trump administration's tariffs start to flow through to store-shelf prices, the firm says Walmart is among the best positioned in retail. Sweetgreen opening locations in 4 new cities this year: See where

Sweetgreen, known for its customizable bowls and "plant-forward menu," will soon be available in four new U.S. cities, according to the company's leadership. The Los Angeles-headquartered fast-casual chain serves bowls that customers can tailor to their own appetite, including choosing from caramelized garlic steak, wild rice and other combinations. Sweetgreen has already opened eight new restaurants this year, including one in Santa Clara on June 10, Chris Tarrant, the chain's chief development officer, told USA TODAY in an email. On June 12, a location will open in Huntersville, North Carolina, he added. Here is what Sweetgreen fans need to know about the future locations coming to four new markets.. Sweetgreen is opening locations in new markets, such as Sacramento, Phoenix, Cincinnati, and northwest Arkansas, Tarrant said. Sweetgreen's northwest Arkansas location will be in Fayetteville, as well as in Bentonville, at Walmart's home office campus, joining restaurants such as Ozark Mountain Bagel, Wright's Barbecue and multiple coffee shops. So far in 2025, Sweetgreen has opened the following locations: Pennsylvania: 1359 Frankford Ave. Suite 2, Philadelphia New Jersey: 221 East Broad Street, Westfield Connecticut: 110 Albany Turnpike, Suite 911, Canton Virginia: 3502 West Cary Street, Richmond and 4225 Fairfax Corner Ave. East, Fairfax Wisconsin: 418 N Midvale Blvd. Madison Michigan: 260 North Adams Road, Rochester Hills By the end of the year, Sweetgreen will have opened at least 40 new locations, Tarrant said. Among the new locations, two will be Sweetlane or drive-thru locations where customers order through the company's digital platform, according to Tarrant. One of the new drive-thru locations will be like previous restaurants, while the second drive-thru location will feature the company's Infinite Kitchen or automated technology, Tarrant said. Tarrant added that about half of the locations opened in 2025 will feature the company's Infinite Kitchen technology. Sweetgreen opened its pilot Infinite Kitchen store in May 2023 in Naperville, Illinois, promising quicker and more accurate service with precise portioning. The automated technology can perform tasks such as dispensing greens, dressing bowls and plates, as well as mixing salads. The automated system would allow team members to focus on food preparation and other tasks, the company wrote in a May 2023 news release. 'Team members add the final touches at the finishing station, with a sprinkle of herbs or a scoop of avocado,' according to the company. Tarrant said the company plans to keep growing in 2026. 'We look forward to serving more communities as we expand our footprint with 15%-20% annual unit growth and offer different formats to meet our guests where they are,' he added.
