Book Review: ‘Elphie' a psychological backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West
For fans, like me, looking to fill their 'Wicked' obsession, 'Elphie,' the fifth book in the Wicked Years series, provides the perfect escape into the world of Oz, with a new look at Elphaba Thropp, the beloved green heroine, before she was known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
From her struggles with familiar jealousy, her thirst for knowledge and her encounters with the marginalized talking animals of Oz, 'Elphie' explores the moments in Elphaba's life that shaped who she is. Devoted fans and readers new to the series will be able to dive in deeper to the social and political issues of Oz and gain a deeper insights into Elphaba's plight for sentient animals, a cause that will later mark her as wicked.
With a subtle political distress throughout the novel and lack of love in Elphaba's life, the novel can feel melancholy at times. But, that is the core of who Elphaba is.
Elphaba's progress from child to an adolescent with better understanding of the world, her wants and needs, guide Gregory Maguire's novel. As Elphaba starts her journey of discovery the novel's pace is slow and steady. But as she begins to understand herself and the joy and wonders of Oz, the novel's becomes a tad more lively.
In contrasts to the rest of the series, in 'Elphie' Maguire takes to writing in short chapters with short sentences, reflecting the overall dysfunction occurring in Oz and in Elphaba. The rhythm Maguire create also make the book easy one to breeze through.
Compared to previous books in the series, there is less happening to drive the narrative. Instead, 'Elphie' serves as a psychological backstory to understand Elphaba's character, explaining what made her one of the most iconic witched in literacy, theater and film.
Making the novel one Elphaba fans must hold space for.

It went on to land 10 Oscar nominations, and winning for costume and production design. 'Wicked' also won the Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement. Director Chu told Vanity Fair that the two parts of 'Wicked' will feel like one complete epic film, despite them being released a year apart. 'What's nice about movie two is it's so different from movie one that it doesn't feel like we're talking about what you just saw. It's the new chapter,' Chu said, teasing of the plot, 'Our heart was broken when Glinda can't make the choice that we want her to so badly at the end of movie one, and it feels empowering for Elphaba to fly away from society. In movie two, we get to see the consequences of those choices. The temperature is up.' Good news! She's…baaaack! Yes, gentle reader, Wicked is returning and the first trailer has landed. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda for act two of everyone's favorite musical, hitting a theater near you this fall. After the blockbuster release of Part One in November 2024—which ruled the box office and earned 10 Oscar nominations, along with a soundtrack that topped many a Spotify Wrapped—fans have been patiently waiting for the news of the second film. Will Elphie and Glinda reunite? What of Fiyero? Who will play Dorothy? Herein, everything you need to know about Wicked: For Good. Who's returning in the cast of Wicked: For Good? The main ensemble—Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West; Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good; Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero; Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible; Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard; Ethan Slater as Boq; and Marissa Bode as Nessarose—will all return. Jonathan Bailey says Wicked sequel is ‘darker' and will ‘go there politically'
Actor Jonathan Bailey has said the Wicked sequel is 'darker' and is 'going to go there politically as well'. The Bridgerton star, 37, plays Prince Fiyero in the films, also starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, which are adapted from the musical of the same name. 'Being slightly off the M1 in Munchkinland, with Ari singing a beautiful mezzo soprano, and then seeing cars pulling up on the hard shoulder trying to record it, and then seeing men in the sky, (which) turned out to be microlights and drones, it was like Independence Day,' he told British GQ.
