Surprise new search for Madeleine McCann
Portuguese police will carry out a new search this week in the municipality of Lagos at the request of German authorities investigating the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, a spokesman told AFP on Monday.
The toddler was never found after going missing from the resort in Praia da Luz where she was with her family, one of the most high-profile missing person cases in history.
Police said it will carry out 'a wide range of actions' between Tuesday and Friday near the southern Portugal seaside resort where the girl disappeared on May 3, 2007.
The move is part of a warrant issued by the Brunswick Public Prosecutor's Office, in northern Germany, which is conducting a preliminary investigation into Christian Bruckner, suspected by German authorities of killing McCann, the Portuguese police spokesman said, confirming information from British and Portuguese media.
'All the evidence seized by police will, with prior authorisation from the national public prosecutor's office, be handed over to agents of the German federal criminal police,' the spokesman added.
The last search occurred in May 2023, near a lake.
'As part of the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case, criminal proceedings are currently underway in Portugal,' a spokesman for the Brunswick public prosecutor's office, Christian Wolters, told AFP.
'We are aware of the searches conducted by the BKA (the German federal police) in Portugal as part of their investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance. The (British) police services are not on-site but we will assist our international colleagues wherever needed,' a British police spokesman told AFP.
Bruckner, currently serving a prison sentence for rape, was acquitted in October 2024 in Germany in a trial for two sexual assaults and three rapes committed between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.

Young woman, 18, found unresponsive in Calingiri property, WA
An 18-year-old woman has died after she was found unresponsive at a remote WA property on Monday night. Detectives are investigating the circumstances behind the death of the young woman who died at a Harrington Street property in Calingiri on Monday night, The West Australian reported. A man called triple-0 before police and emergency services arrived at the property about 8.45pm. The 18-year-old died on the scene, despite the efforts by paramedics to revive her. A number of locals have said they are unaware of what transpired. The circumstances behind her death are now being investigated by detectives. Calingiri has a population of less than 200 occupants, with a 2021 government census recording only 198 residents. The town is about 140km northeast of Perth.

Appeal to identify two women as investigations continue into death of Luke Jon Telega
Police have appealed for public assistance in identifying two women who may be able to assist investigations into the death of Tasmanian father Luke Jon Telega. The body of Mr Telega was found inside an industrial-sized bin behind a Salvation Army at Percy Street in Bellerive on Monday morning. His movements leading up to the heartbreaking discovery are now being pieced together by police. CCTV footage has revealed the 45-year-old caught a bus at Tollard Drive in Rokeby just after 4.30pm on May 30. A woman, dressed in a grey or white hoodie, is seen getting on the bus at the same time as Mr Telega, and then off again in the carpark of the Shoreline Hotel about 4.38pm. While he is on the bus, he is seemingly waved at by a second woman in a red top. 'There is no suggestion the women are involved with Mr Telega's death, but police believe they may be able to help with inquiries,' Tasmanian police said on Thursday. Earlier, police appealed to speak with a woman shown on CCTV footage standing at a shopfront on Percy Street about 7.50pm on June 1. Police believe the member of the public may have spoken with someone on the street at the time. She was driving what is believed to be a light-coloured Toyota Prado. Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
