Tariffs, Not Free Markets, Are JD Vance's ‘Tool'
Matthew Hennessey gets the better of Vice President JD Vance in arguing that the market isn't a tool (Letters, May 29). Mr. Vance tries to support his proposition by citing that FDR directed the automobile industry to build the arsenal of democracy. That effort, however, isn't an example of 'operationalizing' the market. The president used government as a tool to override the market, and the private sector responded.
Mr. Vance writes that President Trump has also 'leveraged access to America's markets' to get 'fairer treatment from foreign partners' on trade, illegal immigration and illegal drugs. But that isn't using markets as a tool, either; it's coercively regulating markets to get the president's desired results. Parenthetically, do Messrs. Trump and Vance really believe Canada's government can substantially reduce the amount of fentanyl passing through its border with the U.S., which at 43 pounds in fiscal 2024 was 0.2% of the volume seized along the U.S.-Mexico border?

Liberal government legislation to further tighten Canada-U.S. border expected today
OTTAWA — Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is expected to introduce a bill today spelling out the federal government's next steps on border security. The recent throne speech promised legislation to bolster security at Canada's borders and new tools for police and intelligence agencies to help them stop the flow of deadly fentanyl and its precursors. The government also said the Canada Border Services Agency will be given new powers to examine goods destined for export to prevent the movement of illegal and stolen products, including cars. The Liberals have worked to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump that Canada is doing enough to stem the southbound flow of drugs and migrants since he blamed fentanyl and irregular migration to justify tariffs on Canadian imports. The new bill will build on earlier Canadian measures, including round-the-clock surveillance of the border using helicopters, drones and surveillance towers. Ottawa is also working with Washington on a North American "joint strike force" to target organized crime groups that work across borders. The most watched shows in the US have been revealed by ratings company Nielsen, and Netflix rules the top of the chart. To assert its clear dominance over TV viewing, precisely half of the Top 20 come from the streaming juggernaut. Nielsen, which historically charts broadcast viewership, has released multi-platform viewing figures for the first time for the 2024-25 TV season. Top of the list of 100, reported by Variety, is Netflix's Squid Game (27.1million viewers), closely followed by the streamer's British hit Adolescence (19million).
