Kate Middleton a no show at Royal Ascot after last minute decision

The Princess of Wales has made a last-minute decision to withdraw from Royal Ascot today, despite being expected to attend. Kate will not be present at the second day of the race meeting as she continues to find the right balance following her cancer treatment.
The princess is reportedly disappointed at missing out on the renowned social and sporting event in Berkshire alongside her husband and the King and Queen. Racegoers had been anticipating seeing Kate, especially as Prince William is listed as one of the individuals presenting race prizes during the second day of the meet.
Her name was also included in the official programme as participating in today's carriage procession in the second carriage alongside William.
However, Kensington Palace confirmed shortly after that she would not be in attendance. It is understood she is trying to find the right balance as she fully returns to public-facing engagements.
A Royal source reiterated that Kensington Palace has consistently emphasised the need for 'flexibility' around the Princess of Wales' public engagements, reports the Mirror.
The source added that the princess completed three engagements in the past week, attending the new VandA East Storeroom exhibition space in London, the King's official birthday celebrations at Trooping the Colour on Saturday and Garter Day on Monday in Windsor.
Prince William is still in attendance and is scheduled to present the trophy to the winner of the Prince of Wales stakes later this afternoon. Kate's mother, Carole Middleton, has also been spotted at the festival today, alongside Alizee Thevenet, who is wedded to Kate's brother, James Middleton.
Kate was absent from Royal Ascot last year after being diagnosed with cancer in February, which led to six months of preventative chemotherapy. She announced in January that she was now in remission and focusing on recovery, while the King continues to receive weekly treatment for the illness.
The princess was last seen in public on Monday when she attended the annual Order of Garter ceremony in Windsor. There, she was observed conversing with Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, and watching other royals, including William, participate in the procession in his Garter robes and plumed hat.
Just days prior, she had also attended Trooping the Colour with the rest of the Royal Family, including her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Kate, who last appeared at Royal Ascot in 2023, has been gradually resuming Royal duties following her cancer diagnosis last year and subsequent treatment, but has been slowly increasing her workload recently.
Royal Ascot was off to a grand start yesterday, with the King and Queen hosting guests in the Royal box on the festival's opening day. Among those present were the King's nephew Peter Phillips and his partner, NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, who made her debut in the carriage procession onto the renowned Berkshire racecourse, signalling the commencement of the day.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Royal procession, a tradition that dates back to the reign of George IV in 1825, when the monarch was accompanied by the Duke of Wellington. The King and Queen led the procession in the first carriage, joined by Prince Faisal, a member of the Saudi Royal family, and Lady Sarah Keswick, one of the Queen's official companions.
Following them were the Princess Royal, Camilla's sister Annabel Elliot, and the Duke and Duchess of Wellington. They were trailed by a coach carrying Anne's son Peter Phillips and his girlfriend.
Other royals spotted among the crowd included Princess Beatrice, her mother Sarah, Duchess of York, and Zara and Mike Tindall.

Tragedy at Royal Ascot as two-year-old filly dies in opening race

Tragedy struck on the second day of Royal Ascot as a horse died from racing in the opening contest. The Richard Hannon-trained Harry's Girl was put down after sustaining a fatal injury during the Queen Mary Stakes. "Unfortunately, Harry's Girl suffered a fatal injury during The Queen Mary Stakes," a statement from Ascot Racecourse said. "Our thoughts go out to all connections at this time." ITV Racing presenter, Ed Chamberlain, confirmed the sad news during the broadcaster's coverage of the meeting, saying her sad passing 'cast a shadow' over True Love's triumph. He said: "We've just had this confirmed by Ascot - Harry's Girl did suffer a fatal injury. "Our thoughts go out to connections. It's desperately sad for the Hannon team after they celebrated with their winner Haatem yesterday." Harry's Girl, a two-year-old filly, was having only her third start on the racecourse. The daughter of Harry Angel won her debut at Newmarket in April before finishing a close second in a listed contest York last month. The race was won by Aidan O'Brien's True Love, who lost her maiden tag in style. Ridden by Ryan Moore, True Love had chased home Tuesday's Coventry Stakes winner and stablemate Gstaad on her latest start and was duly sent off the 9-4 favourite. True Love took some time to work her way into the race as Zelaina set a scorching early pace, but she stayed on to real effect in the final furlong to beat 100-1 shot Flowerhead, with Patrick Biancone's American raider Lennilu third. It was win number 93 for O'Brien at the big meeting, although rather surprisingly his first in the Queen Mary. He said: 'She's lovely and in her first run Ryan came in and said they won't beat her again and then after her second run Wayne (Lordan) said the same thing, that they won't beat her again, and then you have to consider the two that beat her (Lady Iman and Gstaad) are very good horses. 'Ryan gave her a beautiful ride and Michael (Tabor) has always loved her and always spoken about her. It's great as her mother (Alluringly) is in foal to City Of Troy and her sister is in foal to Wootton Bassett so it's marvellous really. 'She was drawn by herself and there was no pace where she was so she had to go and do her own work and that's what Ryan did, he was excellent on her. She was probably strongest in the last half-furlong and when she got going she really powered away. 'Ryan said he was a little slow to step and a little on the back foot all the time and I think that's why he was trying to stoke her up a bit, but late on she was really strong. 'She had to work really hard and the only place she was going to get company was out in the middle and Ryan did really well to let her go there. She was under the pump a long way out, but so strong at the line and is obviously high class. 'She's like a four-year-old really and Ryan thought she would be better when she steps up to six furlongs and she's a big, mature filly who walks around the ring like a four-year-old, she's so scopey – she's something to look forward to.' On future plans, O'Brien added: 'I think we look forward to going up in trip now, the lads will decide that. You would imagine she would have no problem going six furlongs, but she is No Nay Never and he's a big speed influence always. 'The Queen Mary winner seems to always head to Deauville (Prix Morny) or the Curragh (Airlie Stud Stakes) and that would be the two races really or there is the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket in July. That may come too soon, but we will see how she is.'

Women must wear a dress or skirt falling just above the knee or longer, with shoulder straps a minimum width of 1 inch and hats are compulsory. The Queen Anne Enclosure offers a more relaxed dress code, while the Windsor Enclosure is the most relaxed, with no formal dress code but smart attire is encouraged.
