Toronto Maple Leafs or Florida Panthers? John Shannon reveals Sam Bennett's free agency shortlist

Toronto Maple Leafs or Florida Panthers? John Shannon reveals Sam Bennett's free agency shortlist

Time of India2 days ago

Sam Bennett's free agency decision down to Maple Leafs or Panthers
The NHL free agency rumor mill is spinning but not for Sam Bennett. While many players will test the market this summer, Bennett's next move might already be locked in. According to veteran insider John Shannon, Bennett isn't planning to entertain offers from across the league.
Nope. It's a two-team showdown between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's it. Let's break down why this is huge news for both franchises.
What John Shannon revealed about Sam Bennett's free agency plans
John Shannon dropped the bombshell on the
Sekeres & Price Show
, saying:
'Don't waste your time. He's going to play in one of two places: either Toronto or Sunrise, Florida. That's it. That's his decision. He's not going to market the way other free agents do. He'll either be a Panther or a Maple Leaf.'
John Shannon: Who can the Canucks acquire to help them get back to the playoffs?
That's a bold insider statement, cutting through the usual chaos of free agency. While most players test the waters for the best fit, money, or opportunity, Bennett seems laser-focused.
Why Toronto and Florida make sense for Bennett's next chapter
Sam Bennett has thrived in Florida. Since joining the Panthers, he's become a key part of their playoff success, bringing grit, toughness, and clutch scoring. It's no surprise they'd want to keep him.
But Toronto? The Maple Leafs have been craving exactly this kind of player, someone with playoff bite who can complement their offensive stars.

Adding Bennett to their middle six could give them the depth they've long needed.
There's also the tax angle: Florida offers income tax-free contracts, which has helped them keep stars happy. Toronto, on the other hand, brings the allure of playing for a massive hockey market and a team desperate for postseason success.
What this means for the rest of the NHL free agency market
Shannon's remarks also send a message to other teams, like the Vancouver Canucks, who may have had eyes on Bennett: don't bother. This narrows the market, pushing other teams to look elsewhere for similar players and possibly driving up prices on comparable free agents.
It also signals that Toronto and Florida are locked in a direct tug-of-war, setting up an interesting battle as they shape their rosters for next season.

Why Josh Hazlewood choose IPL 2025 over WTC final preparations? RCB's Aussie pacer explains after reaching final

At a time when Mitchell Starc decided not to return to the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) following the one-week pause due India-Pakistan conflict and prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Josh Hazlewood stated the intensity in the world's toughest franchise league will come in handy in preparation against South Africa at Lord's. Both Starc and Hazlewood are a part of the Australian team for the WTC final against the Proteas, starting on June 11. Having missed a few games for RCB in IPL 2025, following a shoulder niggle, Hazlewood delivered when it mattered and played a huge part in RCB's road to IPL 2025 final with 3/21 against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1. RCB, who entered an IPL final after nine years, will play either Mumbai Indians, or Punjab Kings or Gujarat Titans in the final on June 3. With no signs of rust, Hazlewood's show against Punjab Kings was a tick mark ahead of their all-important WTC final. 'I've got to be bowling, you know wherever I am in the world, I've got to be bowling getting ready for that game (WTC final) anyway,' Hazlewood said. In fact, it was the Australian's first IPL game after April 27. 'There's no better place than I think out in the middle, obviously you've got to bowl more, more hours of training from time to time to build up for a Test, but to get that intensity right up, there's no better place than the IPL,' asserted the RCB pacer. Despite missing some of the games in IPL 2025, Hazlewood has taken 21 wickets in 11 games so far. As a result, the Australian moved up to the third place in the list of Purple Cap. The Australian pacer will next be seen in RCB's IPL 2025 final on June 3 either against Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings. While Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans will play in Eliminator on Friday (May 30), Punjab Kings will face the winner of Eliminator for a place in the summit clash. IPL 2025 Playoffs: Five things to watch out for in GT vs MI Eliminator clash

Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians play the Eliminator in New Chandigarh tonight (May 30). The winner of the match will play Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 on Sunday, June 1. RCB defeated PBKS by 8 wickets in yesterday's qualifier 1 match at the same venue. Here are the key things to look out for in the do-or-die encounter. Hardik Pandya was the heart and soul of the Gujarat Titans in 2022 and 2023. The all-rounder from Baroda led the side to glory in its inaugural season. Gujarat Titans were two balls away from retaining the title against Chennai Super Kings in 2023. Hardik returned to his former side, Mumbai Indians, in 2024 and has managed to get at least one win as a captain against all teams except one. Hardik Pandya lost all three matches as the captain of Mumbai Indians against Gujarat Titans. Can Hardik Pandya get off the mark? Note: Mumbai Indians are yet to win a match against the other three teams featuring in the IPL 2025 playoffs. Josh Hazlewood was the standout performer in RCB's thumping win against PBKS in New Chandigarh last night. One bowler from Gujarat Titans would have gotten encouraged by the amount of bounce the pitch offered for Hazlewood. Prasidh Krishna is similar to the Australian in many ways. They are tall, have the ability to hit the good length areas on a consistent basis, and they both operate as the one-change bowlers. His battle against Suryakumar Yadav is going to be a fascinating one. Mumbai Indians' superstar Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, doesn't need any assistance from the pitch. He went for an economy of 5.75 in his four overs against Punjab Kings on Monday. The next best economy for MI that night was 9.33. The presence of powerplay specialists Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar meant that Bumrah was being used as the first-change bowler. One may expect Hardik Pandya to use Bumrah with the new ball against the two leading run-scorers of the tournament, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill. Audacious, flamboyant, and outrageous are some of the adjectives used to describe Suryakumar Yadav's batting. The Indian T20 captain added a new word to the dictionary: consistency. 14 matches, 14 consecutive scores in excess of 25—Mumbai Indians should be hoping that the law of averages is a fallacious concept. The departure of England's Will Jacks and South Africa's Ryan Rickelton, the two consistent performers with the bat, has weakened the batting lineup, and Suryakumar's performance is even more important for the five-time champions. Three batters from the same team scoring more than 500 runs in an Indian Premier League season has never happened in the previous 17 seasons. The Gujarat Titans trio of Sai Sudharsan (679 runs), Shubman Gill (649 runs), and Jos Buttler (538 runs) rewrote the history books. There comes the problem. Jos Buttler isn't available for the playoffs. The Englishman scored 37 off 32 balls in the first ODI against the West Indies last night (May 29). The terrific trio has been curtailed into a dynamic duo. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are having a historic week, albeit with the national side. The former has been elevated to the Test captaincy, while the latter got his maiden call-up to the Test team. Can the two talented youngsters rise to the occasion and deliver for the Titans? Rohit Sharma is the joint-most successful player in IPL history. Rohit and Ambati Rayudu are the only two players to win 6 IPL titles. The legacy of Rohit, the captain, is not for debate. It was sealed four years ago. However, Rohit has a questionable record with the bat in the playoffs. Innings Runs Average Strike Rate 50s Single-digit scores 21 316 15.8 109 2 9

GT vs MI Eliminator: How has Mumbai Indians' talisman Jasprit Bumrah performed in IPL playoffs?

The Mumbai Indians reach yet another playoff in the Indian Premier League as they prepare to take on the Gujarat Titans in today's Eliminator game, at the PCA stadium in Mullanpur. After a poor start to IPL 2025, registering only 1 win in their first five matches, the five-time champions turned it around to make it to the playoffs. MI won six games on the trot after their first five matches as they powered their way to a top-four finish in the IPL 2025 standings. It comes as no surprise that their winning run coincided with Jasprit Bumrah's return to competitive action. The talismanic fast bowler missed the first four matches of IPL 2025 with a back injury, which kept him out of competitive action since early 2025. MI, who were languishing near the bottom of the table, were boosted by Bumrah's return as they turned things around. The fast bowler took the load of his teammates and showed his expertise in the death overs. He lightened the load of Hardik Pandya, who was bowling more during Bumrah's absence, and allowed Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult to concentrate during the powerplay overs. Prior to Bumrah's return to MI, the five-time champions conceded 11.04 runs per over in the death overs (17-20 overs) in the first four matches of IPL 2025. In the next 10 games, MI conceded just 9.48 runs per over in the same period with Bumrah in attack. So, it comes as no surprise that the Mumbai franchise play better with the fast bowler in the team. Ever since his debut for MI in 2013, Bumrah has played 8 matches in the playoffs. His record in the IPL playoffs is as follows: Innings Wickets Average Economy Rate Best Figures 8 11 17.54 6.29 4/14 vs Delhi Capitals (Nov 5, 2020) While MI has had the luxury of many players putting their hand up during crunch situations, their go-to man in tough times has always been Jasprit Bumrah. In today's IPL Eliminator match against GT, the spotlight will shine the brightest on India's premium fast bowler. Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025.
