Groton grand list grows slightly
Groton — The town's 2024 net grand list of taxable properties grew slightly, by 0.2%, or $7.7 million, to $4.7 billion.
Motor vehicle assessments, the category with the largest decrease, dropped by 11%, to $263.1 million. Assessor Mary Gardner said this is because the state passed legislation to value cars with a new formula using Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price multiplied by a depreciation factor.
Real estate grew by 0.4%, to $4.1 billion. Gardner said many Enterprise Zone tax exemptions went into place with Electric Boat's expansion, so the full tax revenue benefits expansion won't be realized for several more years. For example, Electric Boat's South Yard Assembly Building is in the second year of the Enterprise Zone program.
Gardner said Electric Boat's new larger buildings are part of the state's five-year Enterprise Zone program, which provides an 80% tax exemption. The town absorbs half of the exemption, and the state reimburses the other half when it has funding, she said.
Some of Electric Boat's smaller buildings or additions are under the seven-year local Enterprise Zone program, which has a 100% exemption for the first two years and then phased-in exemptions for the next five.
Gardner said personal property had the largest increase, at 8%, growing to $319.8 million, due to the taxable assets Electric Boat acquired through its expansion.
The 2024 grand list is prior to the Board of Assessment Appeals process.
The town's top 10 taxpayers include Electric Boat, Pfizer, apartment complexes, a hotel and a shopping center. Electric Boat remained the top taxpayer in town for the second year in recent decades.
Triton Square Apartments, the apartment complex at the former William Seely School site off Route 12, is new to the town's top taxpayer list.
The top 10 taxpayers, with their net assessments, are as follows:
1. Electric Boat Corp., $431.2 million
2. Pfizer Inc., $362.4 million
3. Merion Group LP (Ledges Apartments), $43.8 million
4. Groton Development Association LTD (Country Glen Apartments), $30.7 million
5. Triton Square Owner LLC (Triton Square Apartments), $27.1 million
6. Elk La Triumph (La Triumph Apartments), $21.8 million
7. Exit 88 Hotel LLC (Marriott Hotel), $20.2 million
8. Winterfell Windham Falls CT Owner LLC (Windham Falls Elderly Apartments), $17.7 million
9. ECA Buligo Groton Partners LP (Groton Square Shopping Center), $16.5 million
10. Branford Manor Preservation LP (Branford Manor Apartments), $16 million

Eagles DC Vic Fangio Breaks Silence on CJ Gardner-Johnson Trade
Eagles DC Vic Fangio Breaks Silence on CJ Gardner-Johnson Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the midst of the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles shocked the league and dominated the headlines by trading safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans for offensive guard Kenyon Green and a fifth-round pick. Advertisement This was a decision that scratched many heads, as Gardner-Johnson was a key piece of the Eagles' defense that held the Kansas City Chiefs to 22 points in their Super Bowl LVIII win. Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson© Bill Streicher-Imagn Images At the NFL annual meetings, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made more sense of the decision, noting how many high-value players they have on the roster. "We got eight guys who are making $15 million or more — we have from the 2022 to 2024 drafts, we have eight starters who are on the Super Bowl team, none of those guys have long-term contracts," Roseman said. "In those drafts, probably have five or six players that will be competing for starting jobs." Advertisement Juggling a roster with several players on long-term contracts and several who are not, Roseman wanted to avoid a situation where he would need to part with 20 guys in one offseason. "We've been very fortunate to be aggressive in keeping our guys and signing guys in free agency, and it's also got to align with the draft and having young players," Roseman said. On Tuesday, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio confirmed Roseman's statements, stating that he agreed with the final decision. Roseman was likely aiming to avoid a contract dispute with Gardner-Johnson in preparation for paying his younger players. Cam Jurgens, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, Nolan Smith, Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean are all on rookie contracts. Carter is also projected to reset the defensive tackle market next year. Advertisement The Eagles also made extending Zach Baun, Saquon Barkley and Lane Johnson their top priorities, each of which requiring a pretty penny. Philadelphia also let several other key contributors walk due to financial constraints, including Milton Williams, Josh Sweat and Isaiah Rodgers. Roseman also admitted that he was too sentimental toward retaining players after the Super Bowl LII win, and he didn't want to make the same mistake again. The Eagles' aim was to maintain a strong foundation, and Gardner-Johnson fell victim to the process. Regardless, Gardner-Johnson joins an incredible secondary unit in Houston consisting of Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter. 40 students graduate from Pinnacle Classical Academy with over $6.2M in scholarships
SHELBY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Forty seniors graduated from Pinnacle Classical Academy May 31 at an outdoor commencement ceremony in the school's Lyceum. Over 77% of the seniors received an associate's degree from Cleveland Community College along with their high school diploma. Fourteen seniors also received a certificate from Cleveland Community College, in areas as varied as biotechnology, business administration, collision repair and refinishing technology and fire protection technology. Commencement speaker Hadley Heath Manning, executive vice president of the Steamboat Institute and a Shelby native, warned the graduates against the pitfalls of convenience, conformity and contempt. She encouraged the graduates to take time for 'inconvenient' relationships, to think independently and to show compassion toward others with whom they disagree. 'Twelve years ago, I stepped foot onto the campus of Pinnacle Classical Academy for the first time. I was six years old and had no idea how much of an impact this place would have on me,' class valedictorian Chesnee Stewart said in her address to her classmates. 'This school has helped to shape who I am and who I will become.' Class salutatorian Madelyn Hicks paid tribute to 'teachers who were willing to help me understand subjects that I couldn't quite grasp.' Hicks said of her classmates, 'I truly believe that you will not find a closer knit group of people anywhere.' 'From our first steps through the halls of Pinnacle to the challenges and triumphs that shaped our high school journey, we've learned lessons that extend far beyond textbooks,' added Casey Greene, Student Government Association president. 'We've learned the value of integrity, the strength found in perseverance, and the importance of community — lessons that will guide us no matter where life leads next.' The seniors were offered a combined $6,283,666 in multi-year merit scholarships. Over 77% of the seniors plan to enter college this fall; they will matriculate at Anderson University, Appalachian State University, Belmont University, Cleveland Community College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington and Western Carolina University. One graduate will enter the United States Army, and another will serve as a missionary; others will enter the workforce. Among the many scholarships received were the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength Scholarship, a full tuition, room, and board scholarship awarded by Gardner-Webb University to William Brooks; the Golden LEAF Scholarship, awarded to Maggie Gomez-Huffman; and Lenoir-Rhyne University's full-tuition President Scholarship, awarded to Michael (Cody) Humphries. 'We are so proud of the 40 graduates of the class of 2025,' said Dr. Shelly Shope, the school's headmaster. 'Many of them entered Pinnacle Classical Academy as first graders when the school opened its doors in 2013. They truly embody the school's motto, 'Dare to Soar.'' A week before graduation, the school hosted its annual senior sunset dinner. The members of the class of 2025 selected James Laughlin, a high school English teacher, to address them as their senior speaker. The evening before graduation, Pinnacle Classical Academy hosted its annual senior scholarship night, during which $65,590 in local scholarships were awarded to the class of 2025. 'We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of area residents who have helped make college more affordable for our students,' said Dr. Shope. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
