Durban North resident crowned SA blackball champ
DURBAN North resident Erin Lazarus won her first-ever women's singles title at the South African Blackball National Championship held at Suncoast Casino last month.
Lazarus, a second year student at UKZN, has been playing the game since a young age but started taking the cue sport seriously from the age of 15.
The 21-year-old reflected on winning her first national title in front of a home crowd.
'My goal going into the championships was to win the singles division because it's the most sought after in the sport. It has always been a goal of mine to lift the trophy. I feel I played with less pressure in my home town compared to last year's event which was also held at Suncoast. In that competition I crashed out in the second round. For this competition I was a bit rusty as I had surgery and was recovering for the nationals.

'Winning on home soil makes it extra sweet because my friends and family were there as well as players from the province. I felt I started off a bit shaky but my semi-final and final matches were my best two matches of the entire competition. Everything just came together at the right time. The feeling of being SA champ is still sinking in,' she said.
Lazarus has competed in five national champs altogether and her previous best finish was the semi-finals in 2023.
She was also full of praise for her opponent in the final, the experienced Joy Willenberg.
'Joy is one of the players I've looked up to since I started playing. I've learnt so much through her and she is one of my best friends. We speak every day and I see her as one of my mentors.'
This triumph followed her silver medal with Team South Africa at the Blackball International World Championships in the UK in October last year.

Her attention now shifts to the upcoming Commonwealth Blackball Games in Mauritius.
'I'm looking forward to that competition which is still in the planning phases. I feel it will be a good tester for me and exciting prospect of potentially winning a trophy I've never won,' she said.

Pirates find Maela, Mako successor [video]
Orlando Pirates will have to tap into the left-back market this window after losing two experienced players before next season. Pirates will see both captain Innocent Maela and long-serving star Paseka Mako depart the club at the end of the June. Maela, who saw his game time reduce more and more over the last two seasons, has a big decision to make. After saying goodbye to the Pirates fans on the field, he has reportedly been offered a role off it. Mako is also a long-serving player at Pirates who joined the club as far back as 2018. During his time at the Buccaneers, he amassed 173 appearances, mainly from left-back. Read the full version of the ' Orlando Pirates sign Innocent Maela and Paseko Mako replacement!' article. The departures of both Maela and Mako open a huge gap at left-back for Pirates. In fact, even before these departures they were already linked to players in those positions. The likes of Fawaaz Basadien as well as Vuyo Letlapa. While one of those two can still be signed, the Sea Robbers are not waiting on those pursuits. According to RSA writer Austin Ditlhobolo, they have already signed Nkosikhona Ndaba from Richards Bay FC. Looking for quick updates? Orlando Pirates latest transfer news [video]
Orlando Pirates have an array of star players at their disposal, but not all are expected to remain in Soweto before next season commences. Bloemhof baller Monnapule Saleng is one of the main doubtful following a six-month PSL hiatus that has had him sidelined since early December. The 27-year-old seems sure to leave this offseason. Orlando Pirates will likely try their hardest to keep starboy Relebohile Mofokeng in Soweto, who has several giants after his signature, including Jose Riveiro's Al Ahly and Zamalek FC – the latter had an R25.8 million bid rejected earlier this year. Read the full version of the ' Orlando Pirates news: Saleng, Sibisi, Rhodes, Mokwena, Mofokeng' article. The Buccaneers have yet to name Riveiro's successor, but the latest signs point to former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena as being on their radar. The PSL winner recently rejected Egyptian giants Zamalek. Looking for quick updates? Watch News in a Minute videos on The South African's YouTube page for all the key stories you need to know!
