Cairo Hosts High-Stakes Talks on Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation Amid Iran-IAEA Tensions

Egypt hosted a series of high-level diplomatic meetings on Monday aimed at easing rising tensions between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with a strong emphasis on the importance of peaceful nuclear cooperation.
The day's engagements began with bilateral talks between Egypt's Foreign Minister and his Iranian counterpart, followed by a separate meeting between the Egyptian minister and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. The discussions culminated in a rare trilateral session involving all three parties — a concerted effort to defuse the standoff and revive constructive dialogue.
The diplomatic flurry follows the release of a recent IAEA report containing sensitive information about Iran's nuclear program, which triggered a sharp backlash from Tehran. In response, Egypt stepped in to mediate, leveraging its longstanding role as a regional interlocutor to bridge divides and advocate for diplomacy over escalation.
'Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes,' an official source said following the meetings, highlighting Cairo's push to contain tensions and encourage mutual trust between Iran and the international nuclear watchdog.
In a parallel diplomatic track, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held separate meetings with both the Iranian Foreign Minister and the IAEA chief. During his talks with the Iranian official, President El-Sisi expressed Egypt's support for mediation efforts led by Oman to help stabilize U.S.-Iran relations. The two also discussed key regional issues, notably the Palestinian cause, with El-Sisi reiterating Egypt's unwavering commitment to regional peace and security.
The IAEA Director General lauded Egypt's close cooperation with the agency, particularly in the field of peaceful nuclear energy. He cited the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant as a flagship project, describing it as a model for responsible, civilian use of nuclear technology in the region. The facility, currently under development on Egypt's northwestern coast, is expected to significantly contribute to the country's energy self-sufficiency.
Monday's meetings underscore Egypt's growing diplomatic role in addressing complex regional challenges and promoting dialogue on nuclear non-proliferation — a timely intervention at a moment of heightened international concern.

FM: Israel's Continued Military Operations Will Lead to More Bloodshed
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said continued Israeli military operations will lead to more bloodshed and further worsen the catastrophic humanitarian crisis the Palestinian people are going through. During a phone call with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Wednesday 4, June 2025, the foreign minister asserted Egypt's keenness on pressing ahead with advancing ties between the two countries and elevating them to broader horizons. Abdelatty congratulated his Australian counterpart on her second term in office following the recent federal parliamentary elections in Australia. The foreign minister also underlined the positive momentum of the visit of the Governor-General of Australia to Egypt in April 2025. This year marks the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries, Abdelatty said. He also said he is looking forward to holding the next round of political consultations between Egypt and Australia, and beefing up investments and trade exchange between the two countries. Meantime, the foreign minister highlighted massive incentives offered by the Egyptian market, along with Egypt's great interest in luring investments in a number of priority sectors, topped by the field of green hydrogen. Abdelatty also reviewed the latest developments in the region, including the war in Gaza, underlining Egypt's mediation efforts in cooperation with the US and Qatar on this score. The only path to achieving sustainable peace is sticking to the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state, based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital, he concluded.

Zimbabwe to Cull Elephants Amid Overpopulation, Drought Pressures
H-Tayea Zimbabwe has announced plans to cull dozens of elephants and distribute their meat for human consumption, citing urgent concerns over overpopulation and worsening environmental conditions. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) confirmed in a statement that the initial phase of the operation will involve the culling of 50 elephants in a large private reserve located in the southeastern region of the country. The move is part of a broader effort to control the country's fast-growing elephant population and ease ecological pressure on its national parks. Zimbabwe is home to the world's second-largest elephant population after Botswana. A recent aerial survey revealed that one southeastern conservation area—known as the Savé Valley Conservancy—now hosts 2,550 elephants, far exceeding its carrying capacity of just 800.
