India elected to UN's Economic and Social Council for term 2026-28
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday announced that India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations for the term 2026-28. He expressed India's commitment to championing development issues and to keep working to strengthen the ECOSOC.
He thanked member states of the UN for their support and trust in India. He also appreciated the efforts made by India's Permanent Mission at the United Nations in New York.
In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, 'India was elected to the Economic and Social Council for the term 2026-28 @UN today. Thank member states for their overwhelming support and reposing their trust in us. Appreciate the efforts of @IndiaUNNewYork. India remains committed to championing development issues and keep working to strengthen the ECOSOC.'

The ECOSOC is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development - economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed-upon goals.
It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits, according to the UN statement. The UN Charter established ECOSO as one of the six main organs of the United Nations in 1945.
Earlier in April, the Permanent Mission of India at the United Nations marked Dr BR Ambedkar's 135th birth anniversary with a special commemorative event at the UN headquarters in New York, attended by global leaders.
During the ceremony, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, highlighted Dr Ambedkar's contributions as a key figure in India's freedom struggle and as the architect of its Constitution.
The event centered around the theme 'The timeless appeal of Dr Ambedkar's vision within the UN and beyond,' underscoring his influence on both India and the global community.'
Harish said, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the commemorative event to mark the 135th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. Dr Ambedkar was a leading figure in India's freedom struggle and the architect of India's constitution. The one who dedicated his life to laying the foundation of our modern republic. The topic of today's discussion, 'The timeless appeal of Dr Ambedkar's vision within the UN and beyond,' is very apt as we celebrate this year 80 years of the establishment of the UN.' (ANI)

Indian, Mongolian contingents exchange best practices in counter-terrorism operations in joint exercise
Military contingents of India and Mongolia participating in an ongoing bilateral exercise in Ulaanbaatar are actively exchanging best practices in counter-terrorism operations and precision sniping, thereby improving interoperability, officials said on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Through joint drills, both forces are working to strengthen their ability to respond effectively to contemporary security challenges, they said. The exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability between the two forces. 'Focused on the conduct of non-conventional operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate, the exercise aims to enhance the operational capabilities of both the forces,' a senior official of the Indian Army said. The participating contingents are actively exchanging 'best practices in counter-terrorism operations and precision sniping', thereby improving interoperability, he said. The two-week exercise is an annual event conducted alternately in India and Mongolia. Its last edition was conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya, in July 2024. The exercise reflects the growing defence cooperation between India and Mongolia. 'Extensive training activities are being conducted to bolster mutual coordination and preparedness. Troops from both the countries are refining their operational tactics and developing the ability to operate in complex terrains and environments,' an official said. A key feature of the exercise includes simulated U.N. peacekeeping operations, designed to 'mirror real-world scenarios' where multinational forces must collaborate efficiently in diverse and challenging conditions,' he said. As the exercise progresses, both sides are engaging in a variety of tactical drills, sharing combat experiences and exchanging valuable knowledge and expertise. These engagements are instrumental in building interoperability and ensuring that Indian and Mongolian forces can operate seamlessly in future peacekeeping or humanitarian missions, they said. In addition to tactical training, exercise 'Nomadic Elephant' places strong emphasis on fostering cultural understanding and camaraderie between participating troops, the official said. Soldiers from both nations have had the opportunity to showcase elements of their respective cultural heritage, strengthening the bond of friendship and mutual respect. This cultural exchange plays a vital role in developing enduring ties between the two forces, he said. The exercise also lays emphasis on key lessons likely to emerge to improve future joint operations. This collaboration not only boosts the defence capabilities of India and Mongolia, but also reaffirms their shared commitment to promoting peace, security and stability in the region, he said. The Indian contingent, comprising 45 personnel, will be represented mainly by troops from a battalion of the Arunachal Scouts, the Indian Defence Ministry had said in a statement ahead of the exercise. The Mongolian Armed Forces contingent, also comprising similar strength, will be represented by 150 Special Forces unit, it had said.

Owaisi hopes AIMIM candidates would be successful in Bihar polls
Hyderabad, Jun 8 (PTI) AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday hoped that his party's candidates would be successful in the coming Bihar Legislative Assembly elections. Addressing Eid Milap event organised at the AIMIM's headquarters here on Sunday evening, he expressed hope that the efforts of the party's Bihar unit chief Akhtarul Iman would be successful. He said the party has already announced its candidate from Bahadurganj in the state. Four of five AIMIM MLAs elected in Bihar in 2020 switched over to the RJD later. Owaisi also said some organisations 'take law into their hands" ahead of Bakrid. He said it is not good for rule of law and the Constitution if law is taken into one's hands. 'If somebody has any complaint, the person should follow the legal route. If you become vigilante, remember, democracy will be weakened," he said. Gurjar protesters end rail blockade in Kota division after govt assurances on their demands
Kota , Rail traffic between Fateh Singhpura and Dungeria station in Kota division of Western Central Railway has resumed after Gurjar protesters vacated the railway tracks following receiving assurance from the government that their demands will be considered. Some members of the community were holding a protest on rail tracks and stalled a passenger train in Bharatpur district on Sunday afternoon after taking part in a Mahapanchayat to press their various demands, including on reservation. The agitators had kept the rail services halted for over three hours between Fateh Singhpura and Dungeria stations, affecting about 10 to 12 trains on the route, the officials said. The protesters had gathered on the railway tracks and stopped the 54794 Mathura-Sawaimadhopur passenger train at Fatehsinghpura near Bayana town, West Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer said earlier. Sourabh Jain, senior divisional commercial manager, Kota , said that state police and railway officials held talks with the protesters, and after some time, they managed to get the track vacated by around 7 pm, following which operations on the track were fully restored. No report of loss of life or injury has been received so far, and the railway is committed to the safety of the passengers, Jain added. Asked about the protest, Vijay Bainsla, son of the late Kirodi Singh Bainsla, who had led several Gurjar agitations on the quota issue, said that the entire community and leaders are happy with the government's response to their main demands. "To get the 5 per cent reservation to Most Backward Classes included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, a proposal would be recommended by the state cabinet and it would urge the Centre . The entire community wanted this. It is a legislative issue. We all are happy," Bainsla told PTI, adding it was their key demand. The Ninth Schedule contains a list of central and state laws that cannot be challenged in court. Bainsla said another demand was that a nodal officer should be appointed in every district to dispose of the police cases against community members during the Gurjar agitation. "The government has agreed to it," he claimed.
