Chelsea roar back to beat Real Betis in UEFA Conference League final

WROCLAW - Chelsea roared back to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw on Wednesday, becoming the first club to complete a clean sweep of European trophies.
Manuel Pellegrini's enterprising Betis caught the favourites cold with an early goal from Abde Ezzalzouli against a flat-footed and listless Chelsea.
But Enzo Maresca's second-half substitutions injected energy and Cole Palmer changed the complexion of the game in a five-minute spell, setting up Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson to score.
Substitute Jadon Sancho made the game safe in the 83rd minute as the Spanish side faded in their first European final and Moises Caicedo added gloss to the scoreline.
Chelsea are the first club to win the full set of five UEFA club tournaments -- the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup.
They have also won their first silverware since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022, following an era of unprecedented success for the club.
Boehly was on the pitch at the end, savouring the win that seemed unlikely when Betis were in control in the first half.
Chelsea have ended the season with a flourish after also securing a place in next season's Champions League following a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
Maresca, in his first season at Stamford Bridge, said he hoped Conference League glory would be a launchpad for the club.
"The club have invested lots of money in the last three or four years, so they are also waiting for results," Maresca told TNT Sports.

PSL transfer news: The ‘Big 3' compete for DREAM SIGNING

PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs all want uSuthu star Tshepang Moremi – but only one can have him. According to Soccer Laduma, the Buccaneers are in pole position to sign the dynamic winger, a player who has already proven himself in top-flight football, and his age (24) suggests he's nowhere near his ceiling. 'As I've said, it will all depends on all the talks and negotiations, but it could involve money and player exchange as well,' an inside source revelaed. 'The value of the player and what AmaZulu want from Pirates could also determine the whole deal at the day.' There are a few candidates linked with the Orlando Pirates job, namely Pitso Mosimane, Pablo Franco Martin, and Rulani Mokwena. The latter has piqued club legend Lucky Lekgwathi's attention, but he has concerns. 'Look I don't have a problem with the coach as long as the coach can come and take this team to another level.' 'Look at [Mamelodi] Sundowns. Rulani left, and they got a new coach. That coach has now won the league, and the coach is in the final of the Champions League,' he added. 'We played the semi-finals of the Champions League this season, so next season we need someone who is going to take us to the final and challenge for the league as you know now our problem is in the league where we are not consistent.' 'No matter who is coming, we as supporters, we just need to make sure we support him. When Jose came people called him a plumber and h'e surprised everyone. We supported the plumber and look where the plumber is today. 'He's one of the best coaches to have coached Pirates. That's why I'm saying whoever is coming to coach Orlando Pirates, even if he's a plumber, let's support that plumber or carpenter.' Norris leads Verstappen in first Spanish Grand Prix practice

McLaren's Lando Norris followed up his victory in Monaco by lapping fastest in the first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen ending the session as his closest rival. The Briton, winner last Sunday to close to only three points behind championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri after eight of 24 rounds, set a best time of 1:13.718 seconds at the Circuit de Catalunya. Verstappen was 0.367 slower but missed about 20 minutes of the session with mechanics working to change the car's rear suspension. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton — winner a record-equalling six times in Spain — was third on the time sheets, 0.378 off the pace and ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc (+0.520) with Piastri fifth (+0.576). The session was the first in which teams used new front wings to meet stricter flex tests introduced for the Spanish weekend, but there was no immediate sign of any significant change. Liam Lawson was sixth fastest for Racing Bulls with Oliver Bearman seventh for Haas, Isack Hadjar eighth for Racing Bull and Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda ninth. Alpine's Pierre Gasly completed the top 10. Mercedes, McLaren's closest rivals in the constructors' standings, had George Russell 11th and Kimi Antonelli 18th. The session featured two young drivers gaining experience, with Frenchman Victor Martins replacing Alex Albon at Williams and Japanese Ryo Hirakawa for Esteban Ocon at Haas.

'You have to make the right choice': Bafana coach Broos on Mofokeng's European prospects

A year ago, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos warned of rushing Relebohile Mofokeng to find a club in Europe saying the Orlando Pirates attacker needed at least one more season in the PSL and also to gain experience playing in the Caf Champions League. After announcing his squad to face Tanzania and Mozambique in friendlies early next month the Bafana coach was asked how he now feels about the 20-year-old who had trials with Premier League club Wolves last year. Mofokeng is now a regular at Bafana and was included in the squad to play Tanzania and Mozambique where he will be accompanied by other promising young players from Pirates — Mbezekeli Mbokazi, Simphiwe Selepe and Mohau Nkota. In the season that has just finished, Mofokeng played a huge role in helping Pirates reach the semifinals of the Champions League where he contributed five goals and provided three assists in the 13 games he played. Mofokeng's contributions in the Betway Premiership to help Pirates finish second for a third time in a row were also not bad for someone who is not an out-and-out striker.
