Brother of Wicklow woman injured during marathon training dies
The family of a Wicklow woman who sustained life-changing injuries after she was marathon training in Sicily have been struck with tragedy once again following the death of their 17-year-old son.
Hannah Leonard was training for the Dublin Marathon when she was struck by a car on October 6, last year.
The young woman was hit while crossing a pedestrian crossing, and has been in Beaumont Hospital since the beginning of the year while she awaits a place in the National Rehabilitation Hospital. A Go Fund Me was launched following the horror accident, with Hannah's father Kevin sharing updates on his daughter's recovery.
In his latest update, Kevin admitted he wasn't going to do an update following the death of his son Dylan, aged 17, but was then met with a 'beautiful sign.'
Kevin wrote: 'And so tragedy has visited our family again, this time more final. Hannah has tragically lost her younger brother Dylan. I wasn't going to do an update this week but then we got the most beautiful sign that he has wrapped his guardian angel wings around his sister. 'His last visit with Hannah was this day week ago, and it was magical. Hannah always has the best reactions for her siblings and last Friday was no different, squeezing Dylan's hand, moving her body, giving him the most intense eye contact and trying to speak to him but she hasn't gotten there just yet.'
Kevin went on to detail the phone call he received from Beaumont Hospital, adding that he is always filled with concern when they call.
Fortunately, the news the family had awaited since January had come — Hannah had been given a place in the National Rehabilitation Hospital where she will be transferred in the 'coming weeks.'
'Overcome with emotions, I almost missed the next bit of news, the tracheotomy has been removed,' Kevin added, '7 months we've been waiting to hear that, her consultant now believing that it will aid in Hannah's recovery.'
The grieving father admitted it was hard to feel joy during such a difficult time but said the family drew comfort from Dylan acting as his sisters' guardian angel.
'He may not have been able to help her in life but now he does as her guardian angel,' Kevin shared, 'He would have been so happy to celebrate these significant milestones.'

Two women dead after being pulled from water at pools in Snowdonia national park with helicopter scrambled to scene
TWO women died after being rescued from popular wild swimming pools in Snowdonia last night. North Wales Police said the women were found in Nant Gwynant valley, in Eryri National Park, Wales. Officers rushed to the scene at 9.30pm after one woman was pulled from the water. Another was in the pools on the Watkin path nearby - one of the six main routes to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. She was also rescued from the water but tragically both women died at the scene. The large, deep Watkin Path pools are a very popular wild swimming spot due to the clear water and beautiful waterfalls. The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, air ambulance and Coastguard helicopter all attended the scene. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Gibson of North Wales Police said cops are appealing for anyone who was walking nearby at the time to gt in touch. An investigation into their deaths is underway and the coroner has been informed. A North Wales Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 21:31hrs following a report that one female had been pulled from the water, and another was reported to be in the water at the pools on the Watkin Path. Most read in The Sun "The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to the area along with North Wales Police, the Air Ambulance and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Charlotte Crowe's apartment went up in flames following the freak accident. She said that herself and her two children, aged 6 and 8, are lucky to be alive. 'We ran for our lives and had to scream and knock on all the apartments from the 3rd floor down to get everyone out safe,' she shared on a GoFundMe page set up to help raise money for her family. 'Although on the night there was absolutely nothing we needed to save just ourselves. 'However, now in hindsight, when the trauma and reality is [setting] in we have lost our whole world. 'All our possessions, beds, furniture, hundreds of books I have collected for years, all the kids toys, passports, keys, some things will be able to be washed & lovely local friends washed the kids clothes several times to remove the smell of smoke. 'Unfortunately the firemen said that everything needs to go as it is very toxic and extremely dangerous,' she added. The mother said she is trying to access emergency accommodation after declaring herself as homeless. 'To even get into emergency accommodation is actually so difficult. 'We are couch surfing at the minute and blessed the kids have their dad's but we are officially homeless,' she said. Charlotte set up the fundraiser to help recover their lives and begin replacing clothing, shoes and other day to day items. 'I really cannot go into a homeless hub with my kids, it is no place for any child but not after our home getting burned down,' she said. 'They have had enough trauma.' Richard Burke In May, 2023, Richard Burke from Donegal Town was found guilty of the manslaughter of Jasmine and jailed for 14 years. The 32 year old had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Jasmine at her home at Forest Park on January 4th, 2019 but did plead guilty to her manslaughter. At the time of his sentencing, Jasmine's mother Jacqueline said of Burke, "the only word that comes to mind is evil". She said the day os her daughter's killing "my world fell apart", adding her daughter was always a kind and generous person.
