Jon Jones officially retires as Tom Aspinall is crowned UFC heavyweight champion

Independent4 hours ago

Jon Jones has officially retired from mixed martial arts, with UFC president Dana White declaring Tom Aspinall the promotion's new heavyweight champion.
Jones, a former two-time light-heavyweight champion, won the vacant heavyweight belt in March 2023, before Aspinall claimed the interim belt that November, when Jones suffered a torn pectoral muscle.
Jones's injury delayed his planned title defence against Stipe Miocic until November 2024, when 'Bones' ultimately returned to the cage and retained his belt with a third-round stoppage. In the meantime, Aspinall made the rare move of defending the interim title, doing so successfully last July.
That set Britain's Aspinall, 32, and American Jones, 37, on a collision course. Or so it seemed. A frustrating saga saw Jones refuse to fight the interim champion yet also refuse to retire, with many fans accusing Jones of wasting Aspinall's time and a segment of the Briton's prime. On Saturday, however, Jones officially announced his retirement from MMA, leading White to declare Aspinall the regular heavyweight champion.
'Today, I'm officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,' Jones wrote on X (formerly Twitter). 'This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I've experienced over the years.
'From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world, and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe—these are memories I'll cherish forever.
'I've faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger, both as a fighter and as a person [...] To my fellow fighters, thank you for bringing out the best in me and for the respect we've shared inside and outside the cage.
'As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I'm excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways. Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey with me. The best is yet to come.'
Jones is seen by many fans and pundits as the greatest fighter in MMA history, although his career was marred by numerous failed drug tests and run-ins with the law. He was twice stripped of the UFC light-heavyweight title and once stripped of the interim 205lb belt. He has tested positive for both performance-enhancing and recreational substances.
Yet many fans cling to Jones's record, with the American having never lost outside of a sole disqualification for using illegal elbows. For years, White attempted to have that result overturned.
Jones vacated the light-heavyweight title in 2020 as he eyed a long-awaited move to heavyweight, and after three years out of the cage, he returned to submit Ciryl Gane in round one. With that result, he claimed the vacant heavyweight belt.
His delayed defence against Miocic pitted the greatest-ever 205lb fighter against the consensus greatest UFC heavyweight ever. However, Miocic was 42 at the time of their fight, and his previous outing was a devastating knockout loss almost four years prior.
Aspinall, meanwhile, has been one of the most electrifying fighters in the UFC since his 2020 debut. The Wigan heavyweight is 8-1 in the UFC with eight stoppage wins, all of them in the first two rounds, while his sole defeat was caused by an injury.
Aspinall, who holds the record for the shortest average fight time of a UFC combatant with five or more bouts, won the interim title by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich, before retaining it with a knockout of Curtis Blaydes. His victory over Blaydes saw Aspinall avenge his injury-induced loss from 2022.

Premier League legend completes fairytale story as he scores in play-off final to lead hometown club back to LaLiga after 24-year absence

Arsenal legend Santi Cazorla completed a fairytale swansong with his hometown club Real Oviedo as they returned to LaLiga after a 24-year absence. Cazorla, 40, gained legendary status at the Emirates after playing 180 times for the club between 2012 and 2018, during a period in which he won two FA Cups. The attacking midfielder, who has also played for the likes of Villarreal and Malaga, originally came through the youth ranks at Oviedo before joining Villarreal aged 17. He returned to the club in 2023 after a three-year spell in Qatar and on Saturday he kick-started a dramatic comeback as Oviedo won the LaLiga 2 play-off final. Taking on Mirandes, who they finished level on points with in the regular season, across a two-legged tie, Oviedo lost 1-0 in the first leg last Sunday. Things got off to a disastrous start in the second leg as they went 1-0 behind, but Cazorla gave his side hope when he converted a penalty late in the first half. Ilyas Chaira then levelled the tie in the second half, before it went to extra-time with the scores at 2-2 on aggregate. However, Oviedo - who lost in last season's play-off final - ensured lightning wouldn't strike twice as Francisco Portillo scored a stunning winner in the 103rd minute to lead Cazorla's side to promotion and back to LaLiga for the first time since 2001. It was a dramatic way to end the campaign, with Mirandes having two men sent off, while Oviedo ended with 10 and their victory sparked jubilant celebrations at full-time. Tearful Oviedo fans invaded the pitch and Cazorla looked delighted and was spotted kissing his wife Ursula. The 40-year-old had previously scored the winner in the play-off semi-final against Almeria, netting a free-kick after coming off the bench. The victory completed a remarkable story for Cazorla, who had been forced to leave Oviedo in 2003 amid financial issues which destroyed their academy and led to the first team dropping down to the third tier of Spanish football. However, his love for the club remained and when Oviedo faced financial issues a decade later, Cazorla purchased shares to help keep the team alive. When Cazorla then returned in 2023, he wanted to go unpaid, but league rules meant he had to earn a minimum salary of £80,000-per-year. The 40-year-old is out of contract at the end of this month and it remains to be seen whether he will continue his playing career, with Cazorla having previously outlined his desire to head into coaching, something that has been mooted at Arsenal. The fact Cazorla is still playing is testament to his desire and mental toughness given he faced 11 operations to cure an Achilles injury he suffered in October 2016. The issue almost caused Cazorla to lose his leg due to an infection and he was once told by doctors he should be happy to walk again, never mind play. Across numerous operations, some of his arm and hamstring muscle was used to rebuild the tendon. Cazorla also won 81 caps for Spain, winning Euro 2008 and 2012, although he missed La Roja's 2010 World Cup success due to injury.

St Mirren have 'nothing to fear' about tough league start

We asked for your views on St Mirren's Scottish Premiership fixtures and how they will be faring after 10 what some of you said:Alistair: We've got both the Old Firm in the first month, which I hope is a good time as they bed in new squads and have Europe to think about. The European games will take a lot out of Hibs and Aberdeen, so I can see us having a good start with good We need to make a fast start and I'm pleased to have Celtic at home first game. We should have nothing to fear after going undefeated in the top six after the split last season. We've shown how well organised and competitive we can be on our day. What we need this season is more consistency. It was a puzzle last season to watch us great one week and poor the next. Top six again will be a massive challenge for a club of our means, but I genuinely think we can do it again. And of course I'd love a good cup run - we are overdue one!Pat: We will be top six from day one to the end of the season and win a cup.

'Tough start' for Well but fans have faith in 'Askou-ball'

We asked for your views on Motherwell's Scottish Premiership fixtures and how they will be faring after 10 what some of you said:Clare: Well, well, well, what can I say, I am feeling very positive about where the new manager wants us to finish, which is in the top six. Our opening day fixture against Rangers, well at least it's at home. All I can say for the season ahead is 'bring it on' because this is my fourth season being a season ticket holder and I am just so excited and pumped. Time will tell if my feelings will Twenty points after 10 games, you heard it here first. Askou-ball from the start!D: A tough start certainly, but if we have aspirations of top six then we need to get results in some of these games. Games against the Old Firm don't define our season, but we need to get points against the rest of the sides. Will be interesting to see what style the new manager Sadly I think we are heading for relegation this year. And we will be in the bottom four after the first 10 Tough start so need to get up and running and playing with confidence - will need to boost the squad immediately.
