
What role will E/E architectures play in the electric car of the future – Eight questions for Carsten Hoff from dSpace
They are known as the 'nerve pathways of the car' – the countless data lines in modern cars that connect sensors, engines and control units with each other in kilometre-long cable harnesses. Not only do all these systems have to harmonise perfectly with each other, but some of them also communicate with the outside world via the internet. A highly complex system, of which car buyers are generally aware as little as possible, if manufacturers and suppliers have their E/E architecture under control.
So it's no wonder that E/E architectures have become a hugely important topic for OEMs and their partners, and billions are being invested. After all, sales trends show that many customers, especially in the Chinese market, are more interested in software issues and connectivity services than the technical details of their (future) car's drive system. Purchase decisions today are sometimes based on software update cycles or how well the car fits into their own digital ecosystem. And not according to the battery chemistry, the design of the electric motors or even the number of cylinders.
But how does it all interact? Where are the trends heading, where are the opportunities and risks? In an interview with electrive , Carsten Hoff, CEO of the dSPACE Group and conference chair at the EEHE ('electrical + electronic systems in hybrid and electric vehicles') conference, which took place in Bamberg, Germany, answers these questions.
Mr Hoff, most car buyers are probably not familiar with E/E architectures, but they do know what over-the-air software updates are. How should an OEM prepare its E/E architecture in order to be optimally equipped for OTA updates?
OTA updates require a holistic approach, as they not only require special E/E architectures in the vehicle, but also have a significant impact on the OEM and its development processes.
The vehicle's E/E architecture must be designed in such a way that it will still be able to receive, verify, distribute to one or more control units and ultimately execute future software several years from now. This requires modular hardware and software architectures. Typically, these communicate service-based via Ethernet, so that communication between the control units is flexible.
The effects on the OEM are just as extensive. In addition to the obviously necessary backend connection, the development-related changes are more far-reaching. Instead of delivering a finished vehicle, in future a vehicle will be developed further over many years. This requires consistent data and version management and the ability to test and homologate these different software versions. One solution for mastering this complexity is virtual verification using a so-called digital loop.
In short: OTA capability must be a basic principle of the entire architecture and development process, not just an add-on at a later date.
Is the E/E architecture of a vehicle primarily relevant for connectivity issues? What role do electric drives and autonomous driving play?
Connectivity is an important driver, but by no means the only one. Autonomous driving in particular has an impact on the E/E architecture, as enormous amounts of data have to be generated and processed. However, these issues do not affect communication between the control units so much as the control units concerned.
For the control units of autonomous driving functions, for example, this means redundancy concepts and high functional safety requirements in combination with high bandwidths and real-time requirements.
Connectivity control units have more flexible and different interfaces. They typically have faster update cycles and are linked to high security requirements.
How do you see the German manufacturers positioned in this area? With its new class, BMW has announced a completely new architecture with four large central computers, while VW is working with the US startup Rivian.
The German OEMs have recognised that a far-reaching transformation is necessary. BMW is taking a bold step forward with its new class and is relying on a centralised computer architecture that replaces many individual control units. Volkswagen is using co-operations such as with Rivian to bring innovative software and hardware solutions to its portfolio. These and similar steps can be observed throughout the industry – not just among German OEMs.
However, clear differences can be recognised in the implementation. A key factor in consistent implementation is the extent to which legacy issues can be jettisoned.
There is often talk of a 'zonal' E/E architecture. What is behind this term?
The 'zones' of an E/E architecture are only one part of the overall concept. As a rule, a zonal architecture consists of one to a few high-performance computers (HPCs), several zone control units and the sensor/mechatronic components.
The HPCs have centralised functions and perform the essential tasks. For example, there could be one HPC each for all driving functions, connectivity and autonomous driving functions. The zone control units – such as the front end, passenger cell and rear end, which connect the sensor/mechatronic components – are logically arranged below this. Exceptions to this are the sensors for the autonomous driving functions, which are usually connected directly to the HPC.
The new structure drastically reduces complexity, simplifies wiring harnesses, saves weight, lowers costs and increases flexibility when integrating new functions.
In short: zonal architectures are the answer to the increasing complexity of modern vehicles.
What role does cybersecurity play in development? Is it possible to standardise measures, or do the safeguards have to be specifically adapted?
With the introduction of new cybersecurity standards such as ISO/SAE 21434 and UN R.155 at the latest, functional security is not the only key development objective. Just like OTA updates, cybersecurity must be considered holistically, as it affects every networked component and must be ensured for years in the post-production phase. This requires new processes, procedures and methods, starting with a Threat-And-Risk-Analysis (TARA), cybersecurity tests (also in combination with functional tests) and, if necessary, the subsequent decommissioning of functions.
How much expertise do the OEMs actually have in the 'nerve centres of the car', and what role do the suppliers play in the E/E architecture?
In the context of software-defined vehicles (SDV) and zonal architectures, OEMs are increasingly building up their own expertise, particularly in key areas such as software architecture, system integration and functional safety. The definition of the architecture, bus systems and communication is clearly in the hands of the OEMs. This applies in particular to OEMs that have a high level of system understanding or want to develop defined parts of the application themselves.
At the same time, suppliers remain indispensable partners – especially when it comes to providing hardware platforms, basic software or specific technologies such as high-voltage components or driver assistance systems. However, cooperation is shifting: OEMs are providing fewer specifications and taking on more system responsibility, while suppliers are increasingly acting as development partners.
What trends do you see in E/E architecture? Where is hardware heading, and what requirements will future software have to fulfil?
The direction is clear: greater centralisation of computing power on powerful HPCs and zone controllers, connected via fast Ethernet networks. Hardware and software are becoming more decoupled, resulting in more flexible and modular systems.
On the software side, development and testing is becoming increasingly modular. Virtualisation plays an important role here, as this is the only way to meet the high requirements for fast development cycles, greater complexity and increased quality.
The range of functions required is constantly increasing. Can this also become a cost trap? What costs are we talking about for the E/E architecture of a modern, networked electric car, and where will the costs go if the demands on the systems continue to increase?

Asian shares gain as investors keep an eye on China-US trade talks
Asian shares were mostly higher on Tuesday as investors kept an eye on China-U.S. trade talks that might help stave off a recession. A second day of talks was planned after U.S. and Chinese officials met in London for negotiations over various issues. The hope is that they can eventually reach a deal to reduce painfully high tariffs against each other. Most of the tariff hikes imposed since U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his trade war are paused to allow trade in everything from tiny tech gadgets to enormous machinery to continue. On Monday, the S&P 500 edged up just 0.1% and at 6,005.88 is within 2.3% of its record set in February. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by 1 point, which is well below 0.1%, to 42,761.76. The Nasdaq composite added 0.3% to 19,591.24. Hopes that President Donald Trump will lower his tariffs after reaching trade deals with countries around the world have helped the S&P 500 has rally back after it dropped roughly 20% from its record two months ago. It's back above where it was when Trump shocked financial markets in April with his wide-ranging tariff announcement on what he called 'Liberation Day.' Rocket Lab, a space company that could pick up business at SpaceX's expense, rose 2.5%. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.48% from 4.51% late Friday. It fell after a survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that consumers' expectations for coming inflation eased a bit in May. Economists expect a report coming on Wednesday to show inflation across the country accelerated last month to 2.5% from 2.3%. The Fed has been keeping its main interest rate steady as it waits to see how much Trump's tariffs will raise inflation and how much they will hurt the economy. A persistent increase in expectations for inflation among U.S. households could drive behavior that creates a vicious cycle that only worsens inflation. In other dealings early Tuesday, U.S. benchmark crude oil picked up 31 cents to $65.60 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, also gained 31 cents, to $67.35. Huawei chips are one generation behind US but firm is finding workarounds, CEO says
BEIJING (Reuters) -Huawei Technologies' chips are one generation behind those of U.S. peers but the firm is finding ways to improve performance through methods such as cluster computing, Chinese state media quoted CEO Ren Zhengfei as saying on Tuesday. The chipmaker invests 180 billion yuan ($25.07 billion) in research annually and sees promise in compound chips - or chips made from multiple elements - Ren said in an interview in the People's Daily newspaper of the governing Communist Party. The public comments are the first from Ren or Huawei about the firm's advanced chip manufacturing efforts. U.S. export controls since 2019 have prevented Huawei from accessing high-end chips and equipment to manufacture them. Huawei has since marketed its Ascend series of artificial intelligence chips which compete in China with offerings from U.S. rival Nvidia, the global leader in AI chips. The U.S. commerce department last month said use of Ascend chips would be a violation of export controls. Huawei is just one of many Chinese chipmakers, Ren said in the interview. "The United States has exaggerated Huawei's achievements. Huawei is not that great. We have to work hard to reach their evaluation," he said. "Our single chip is still behind the U.S. by a generation. We use mathematics to supplement physics, non-Moore's law to supplement Moore's law and cluster computing to supplement single chips and the results can also achieve practical conditions," he said. Hilton Opens Garden Inn Gen A in China as Brand Bets on Young Travelers
Hilton on Tuesday debuted its first Hilton Garden Inn Gen A hotels in China, a new regional prototype designed specifically for younger, more design-conscious travelers – Gen A stands for Generation Alpha. The openings are in multiple cities, including Chongqing, Sanya, and Harbin. At its 2025 Hilton Garden Inn Investment Summit, the company also announced 19 new signings for the brand across Greater China, adding to a growing pipeline of 185 planned properties, in addition to the 115 already operating in the region. Hilton's 2025 Trends Report revealed that 88% of Gen Alpha and Gen Z in Asia Pacific are likely to travel in the next year. Gen Alpha and Gen Z's appetite for travel is particularly pronounced in China, India and Singapore, where young travelers have gone on two to three trips on average in the past year. The company has chosen a light-asset model in China, using joint ventures and franchise deals to expand rapidly without tying up capital. 'Our business in China is large and still keeps going strong,' Kevin Jacobs, Hilton's CFO, said in the company's most recent earnings call. 'Part of that business in China… is in a joint venture format for Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn, where we share the economics… Every one of those deals is, like a lot of our franchise deals, no capital, infinite yield, and we're growing a huge presence and building a big brand name in China on the backs of those deals.' Jacobs noted that Hilton Garden Inn continues to be a strong performer in China. He explained that these deals are made at market rates with full fees and deliver higher RevPAR. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta said during the call that the strategy is entering a new phase: 'Now what we're doing is franchising. We've built a team and we're franchising, particularly with Garden Inn and other brands, our own brands.' Alan Watts, Hilton's Asia-Pacific president, told Skift earlier this year: 'One in every 3 hotels under construction in China carries the Hilton flag.' And Hilton Garden Inn, in particular, has become the go-to brand for smaller Chinese cities, where full-service Hiltons might not be viable yet. Hilton has more than 840 hotels in China across 260 destinations, but the domestic travel environment is still recovering. Hilton reported that RevPAR in China dropped by 3.1% in the first quarter of 2025, mainly due to strong outbound travel during the Chinese New Year and tough comparisons to last year. That hasn't slowed the company's long-term plans. In the February earnings call Nassetta pointed out, 'Chinese are traveling like crazy. So there's a whole outbound story… So, while we still expect China to sort of be positive growth, but tepid… when you aggregate all the demand for travel coming out of China, it's super beneficial to our broader APAC business.' China may not be booming right now, but outbound Chinese travelers are fueling Hilton's growth in nearby regions like Japan, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. To strengthen its position among Chinese travelers, Hilton recently teamed up with DiDi ChuXing, the country's leading ride-hailing platform. Through the partnership, Hilton Honors and DiDi Mileage members now enjoy tier-based cross-program benefits that range from discounted rides to room upgrades and late checkouts. Ben George, Hilton's APAC commercial director, explained the idea behind the collaboration: 'We're creating a seamless journey from departure to hotel, further elevating the overall Stay experience for our members and guests.' For Hilton, this kind of lifestyle integration isn't just a perk. It's part of a broader strategy to keep travelers inside its ecosystem — from booking a car to checking in at the hotel. Last year Hilton also announced a new partnership with Starbucks China, allowing Hilton Honors and Starbucks Rewards members in mainland China to link their accounts, earn points, reciprocal membership benefits and fast-tracked elite status.
