Benfica boss singles out 'very strong' Chelsea star after Club World Cup defeat
Benfica head coach Bruno Lage singled out Pedro Neto for special praise following the side's Club World Cup defeat to Chelsea, pointing to the winger's constant threat in 'one-on-one' duels.
The Blues appeared to be cruising towards the quarter-finals as Reece James fired a superb free-kick beyond Anatoliy Trubin to break the deadlock in the 64th minute, before play was suspended due to nearby lightning.
But Angel Di Maria held his nerve from the penalty spot to turn the last-16 tie on its head deep into stoppage time, just moments after Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Chelsea came out fighting in extra time at North Carolina's Bank of America Stadium, though, with Christopher Nkunku, Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all finding the net to secure a 4-1 victory.
Enzo Maresca's men will return to Philadelphia to take on Brazilian outfit Palmeiras for a place in the semi-finals next weekend.

'When you look at the whole game, a lot of things happened and it's hard to accept,' Benfica manager Lage told reporters at his post-match press conference.
'When we work at Benfica, we have to come to these competitions with great ambition. That's why our first goal was to get through the first round.
'After that, anything can happen and it was 50-50. We had a good chance of getting through.'
Lage once again applauded Neto having named the Portugal international as one of Chelsea's key weapons in the build-up to Saturday's round of 16 contest.
'We have to understand that we are playing against a good team, in which Pedro Neto was very strong one-on-one,' he added.
'We played our game. Maybe in the first half we could have done better in terms of attack, but after that, over time, the team grew and the players on the field gave us a different energy.'
Lage praised his players for the way they coped in 'difficult' conditions against the Europa Conference League winners.
'We had belief that we could take the game to extra-time but then, with everything that happened to us, and with the sending off, it was very difficult to play against a great team,' he continued.
'It was difficult to play in these conditions. More than 30 minutes with ten men, it was very difficult.
'But even still, I think we were the better team in the first 15 minutes of extra time.
'We had at least four good chances, four good transitions in which we could have scored a goal. But after 2-1, the game was over.'
Facing the media shortly after the final whistle, an irate Maresca blasted the 'joke' decision to delay the action with his side defending a narrow lead in the closing stages of normal time.
'For 85 minutes we were in control of the game. We didn't concede anything; we created chances enough to win the game. And then after the break the game changed completely,' Maresca said. More Trending
'For me personally, it's not football. You cannot be inside for two hours. It is something completely new.
'I can understand that for security reasons, you are to suspend the game. But if you suspend six, seven games that means that probably is not the right place to do this competition.'
The Italian went on: 'This is a fantastic competition. The Club World Cup is top and we are happy to be in the last eight.
'It's not normal to suspend a game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Probably zero. In Europe, how many games? Zero.'

Newcastle's transfer misery after missing out on 4 of Eddie Howe's top targets
Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, finally ending an extremely frustrating summer window which has seen them fail to land a number of top targets Newcastle's summer of frustration is threatening to derail what is a pivotal window at St James' Park. After ending their long trophy drought and securing a return to the Champions League, hopes of a transformative window had been raised. After initially spending big under their Saudi ownership, PSR restrictions have meant three relatively quiet windows on the spin. But now finding themselves in a significantly stronger position in that regard, money is available - and Howe made it clear he wanted signings quickly. 'Speed is key for us, which I've reiterated many times internally,' he said before the window opened. 'Speed is key because we have to be dynamic, we have to be ready to conclude things very quickly, because good players don't hang around for long. 'That is what we will be trying, but the reality is it is not always in your hands. We will be doing our best to do things early.' And while the intent has been there for Newcastle, the execution has been lacking. As the calendar turns to July, the Toon are still waiting for their first arrival, although goalkeeper James Trafford is closing in on a move. It could have been a very different summer, however, had they landed some of the targets they had shortlisted. Matheus Cunha It often felt like a formality that the Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman would swap Molineux for Old Trafford. The Brazilian made it very clear he wanted to leave the Black Country, with the club equally willing to reciprocate. But according to reports back in April, it was Newcastle who also made him their top target. With the lure of European football it was hoped they would be at the front of the queue. But the forward instead signed for the Red Devils - labelling it a dream come true. Bryan Mbeumo A very similar story. And a story which appears almost certain to have the same ending. As with Cunha, Newcastle joined the queue for the services of the Brentford forward along with Manchester United and Tottenham. It is understood Newcastle pulled the plug on a deal due to the Cameroon international's wage demands. Nevertheless, it appears Mbeumo's preference was always to head to Manchester. Liam Delap Despite being part of an Ipswich side that were relegated, Delap earned himself plenty of admirers after an impressive season at Portman Road. Howe was one of those, going public with his praise for the striker. 'He's got big strengths, very strong, powerful runner. Certainly knows where the goal is. I think he's had a really good season. He's always had a lot of potential.' Delap held talks with a number of clubs, Newcastle amongst them, before ultimately deciding to join Chelsea in a £30m deal. Joao Pedro Newcastle's latest transfer defeat, is set to chalk up another victory for Chelsea. The Brighton forward is now closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge with a medical imminent. But Newcastle made a big play for Pedro - only to see a £50m offer rebuffed by the Seagulls. Chelsea then upped their bid to £58m, getting the green light to pursue a move and to leave Howe facing even more misery. The silver lining It's not all bad news though…honestly. James Trafford is expected to sign for the Magpies. The deal for the goalkeeper is understood to be at a very advanced stage and a transfer in the region of £30m could be completed soon. Trafford was a priority target for Howe and Newcastle…that doesn't always mean a deal can get done, however. But the Magpies boss will be hoping that Trafford's arrival sees their luck change and more players can be secured before the start of next season.

Man City score controversial opening goal against Al-Hilal with Saudi side furious after VAR decision - and supporters BOO referee's explanation
Manchester City scored a controversial opening goal against Al-Hilal in their Club World Cup last-16 showdown - leading to the referee being roundly booed. Bernardo Silva put City ahead after just nine minutes in Orlando after he was first to meet a rebound, and he slotted calmly into the net from a matter of yards. Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders, two of City's big-name summer signings, combined sharply in the build-up, before the full back's cross deflected to Silva. However, the Saudi side furiously protested the goal, believing that Ait-Nouri had clearly handballed seconds before Silva poked over the line. Replays of the incident were even flashed up on the big screens around the stadium and a loud roar of disapproval went up from large sections of the crowd. Al-Hilal players surrounded referee Jesus Valenzuela while VAR checked the flashpoint, but the on-field decision was eventually allowed to stand. Valenzuela then explained his call using his microphone, but his message was almost drowned out by the continuing protests around him and unhappiness in the crowd. Limited replays of the potential handball were shown on live TV but there certainly appeared to be contact with Ait-Nouri's arm as he moved into the penalty area. More to follow.

Fluminense's Silva savours double celebration after beating Inter at Club World Cup
June 30 (Reuters) - Fluminense captain Thiago Silva had extra reason to celebrate after Monday's 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the Club World Cup round of 16, revelling not only in his team's historic performance but also in beating his former club's city rivals. The 40-year-old defender, who returned to his hometown club Fluminense last year, played three seasons with Milan between 2009 and 2012, winning a Serie A title and an Italian Super Cup. As Fluminense knocked their Italian opponents out of the revamped FIFA tournament, Silva acknowledged he thought about the joy Milan fans would feel witnessing their arch-rivals' defeat. "I was thinking here and thinking about Milan," he told DAZN after the match in Charlotte. "I'm sure the Milan fans will be happy about Inter's defeat and our victory." The centre-back, who also enjoyed successful spells at Paris St Germain and Chelsea, praised his team's outstanding performance in overcoming the Champions League runners-up. "This is a very important result for us. We knew it wasn't going to be an easy game. They played in the Champions League final less than a month ago," Silva added. "Today we played an incredible match. It had to be this way, there was no other way to achieve it. "We were always together, defensively we played an excellent match. They also made it difficult for us, perhaps we lacked something in defence, but that's understandable against an opponent like this." The Brazilians next face the winners of the Manchester City v Al Hilal tie in the quarter-finals on Friday.
