Five charged with assaulting, injuring student
SEREMBAN: Five individuals pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to two charges of using criminal force against a 17-year-old male student in an incident in Kampung Sentosa Jaya on May 8.
Shazrin Shah Mohd Norazham, 19, Nur Ariq Farhan Ismail, 21, Nur Ezwan Ezanie Rohaizad, 24, and two boys aged 17, claimed trial after the charges were read to them before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.
According to the first charge, the accused, along with others still at large, allegedly caused grievous hurt to the victim at around 11 pm.
They were charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which provides a jail term of up to seven years and a fine if convicted.
For the second charge under Section 147 of the Penal Code, they were accused of rioting and causing hurt to the victim, which carries a jail term of up to two years and a fine or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor P. Rubini proposed bail at RM7,000 for each accused, but lawyer Razqeeyanur Sarini Salzali, appearing for all the accused, appealed for a lower bail, citing that the accused are young and come from lower-income families.
The court set bail at RM2,500 for the first charge and RM2,000 for the second charge for each accused, with one surety each, and fixed June 16 for case mention.

Man nabbed over haj scam involving elderly pilgrims
SEREMBAN: A 67-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a haj package scam involving elderly Malaysian pilgrims who claimed they were confined and forced to walk through dangerous routes in Saudi Arabia. Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff said the suspect was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday following several police reports lodged in Mantin. He has since been remanded for four days to assist in investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Preliminary investigations revealed that victims from Mantin – a husband, wife and their daughter aged between 30 and 60 – suffered losses totalling RM81,000. "We believe there may be more victims affected by this fraudulent scheme. "We are also working to determine whether the scam was carried out individually or through an agency," Ahmad Dzaffir told reporters at the Seremban City Council Hall today. He urged others who may have fallen victim to similar haj scams to come forward and lodge police reports. Yesterday, federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali confirmed that three reports have been received from the victims' next of kin – two in Mantin and one in Ayer Hitam, Johor. It was reported that a group of Malaysian pilgrims had been duped by a local agent linked to a prominent religious figure. One of the victims' daughter claimed her parents and aunt, who travelled to Saudi Arabia on May 9, were forced to trek from Jeddah to Makkah without proper documents, food or water to avoid detection by Saudi authorities. Repeat offender in Kuching gets five years' jail, one stroke for drug abuse

KUCHING (June 16): The Sessions' Court here today sentenced a 41-year-old repeat drug offender to five years in jail and one stroke of the cane for amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse. Judge Musli Ab Hamid meted out the sentence against Jonathan Fu Won Yen after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act. Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, or up to two years in prison, or both, while Section 39C (1)(b) of the same Act provides for up to seven years imprisonment and not more than three strokes of the cane upon conviction. Musli also ordered Fu to undergo supervision for two years following the completion of his sentence. The offence was committed at the Kuching District Police Narcotics Crime Investigation Department office on March 19, 2024. Fu has two previous convictions for the same offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA 1952, both on Oct 19, 2022.
