Fresh appeal to identify man found dead in city
Fresh efforts are being made to identify a man found dead in a city centre 25 years ago.
He was found lifeless near Southend East railway station in Essex on 15 November 2000, having been seen wandering in the area the day before.
The man, who was wearing a green jacket and brown trousers, was believed to have been homeless and about 65 years old, British Transport Police (BTP) said.
"The circumstances here are truly tragic," said a BTP spokesperson.
"A man dying alone with no apparent family or friends aware of their whereabouts and, after all this time, still in the dark about their death."
The man had been seen walking along the platform at Southend East station on 14 November that year.
The following morning, he was found dead close to the scene.
BTP said the man was known to frequent the city centre and was 176cm (5ft 7in) in height.
"Despite significant inquiries at the time and since, this man's identity remains unconfirmed and their next of kin uninformed," the force added.
"We'll be conducting further inquiries in Southend-on-Sea over the coming days so that we can give someone somewhere who has spent far too long without answers some much needed closure."

PC spared jail after sexually touching victims
A trainee police officer found guilty of sexually touching two women on a night out has been sentenced. Charlie Valente, 24, from Leeds, was given a two-year community order with 200 hours unpaid work at Leeds Crown Court. The West Yorkshire Police student officer was found guilty in May of three counts of sexual touching following an incident in November 2022. The force said Valente had been suspended from duty pending a misconduct hearing. Passing sentence Judge Andrew Stubbs told Valente: "You were drunk, boorish and believed you were untouchable as a sexual predator. You felt in a position to dominate the victims. "One of the victims was so drunk she did not know what was happening, but you continued even when she showed she was not interested. "During the trial, one of the victims described the impact of your actions on her personal life that she has been having to rebuild because of what you did to her, so these are serious offences." He told Valente that he "may seem sorry now, but he didn't seem sorry for what he did" during his trial. However, he noted that Valente had "matured considerably from the drunken 22-year-old he was" at the time of the incident. As well as the community order, he was told he would have to carry out a 90-day alcohol rehabilitation programme and 20-day rehabilitation programme. He was also ordered to pay £8,000 towards the cost of the case. Speaking after Valente was found guilty, Det Ch Supt Tanya Wilkins said: "What was reported to the police by the first victim was a pattern of behaviour by this student officer over the course of a night out that has made her extremely uncomfortable, including unwanted sexual touching. "As part of our enquiries, we reviewed CCTV and established that there was also a second potential victim. "She was identified and spoken to and again confirmed that she had not consented to the sexual touching she was subjected to." Stalker put AirTag in victim's car to track her
A man who stalked a woman and put a tracking device on her car to follow her movements has been jailed. Northampton Crown Court heard Wayne Stead, 48, of Stimpson Avenue in the town, started harassing her, making threats and turning up unannounced at her home after their relationship broke down in 2023. He was jailed for two and a half years and handed an indefinite restraining order after pleading guilty to stalking involving serious alarm or distress. PC Rich Horsburgh from Northamptonshire Police said: "The ordeal that Wayne Stead subjected this woman to was nothing short of horrific." "Her bravery in coming forward, despite her very real fear that he would make good on his threats to harm her, is remarkable," he added. The court heard Stead started calling and messaging the woman at all hours of the day and night after their relationship broke down. He placed an Apple AirTag, which are designed to help people find missing items, in her car. Concerns have previously been raised about the devices being used by stalkers. The woman reported Stead to the police in August 2024, telling them she had moved into a hotel and was in fear of her life. He denied the offences but, before his trial took place, he changed his plea to guilty and was charged with 30 months' imprisonment on 28 April at Northampton Crown Court. He was also given an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman or going near her home. A charge of burglary against him was dropped after prosecutors offered no evidence.
