Mastantuono - the future Real star aiming to leave River on a high

BBC News5 hours ago

He may be only 17 years old and heading to one of the world's grandest clubs in Real Madrid, but River Plate star Franco Mastantuono's path could have easily taken him on a different route to football.Real's incoming youngster once dreamed of becoming a YouTube star, while he was also a young maestro on the tennis court, travelling Argentina to play matches. What diverted him? He was just too good with the ball at his feet.River will receive 45m euros (£38.5m) for the attacking midfielder. However, the Argentine giants say Real's expenditure on Mastantuono – including taxes and payments elsewhere – totals 63.2m euros (£54m) in a record sale for the South American country's first division. He officially makes the switch to La Liga after turning 18 in August. That comes after the Club World Cup, where Mastantuono aims to leave River on a high.Following a bright start, and having won the player of the match award in his last outing against Monterrey, his next challenge is helping the Group E leaders seal qualification for the last 16 against Inter Milan on Thursday (02:00 BST)."Any player in the world dreams of playing for River Plate and Real Madrid," he told DAZN this week."I want to leave River Plate on a high note because it's given me everything and I'm very grateful. My focus is on River Plate and trying to win the tournament."
Waiting to demonstrate his qualities in Spain, the teenager, with one senior cap for Argentina, has already made an impression in his native land."Franco's passage through our club left an indelible mark." Roberto Binzuna, the president of Cemento Armado, where Mastantuono earned his stripes before joining River, tells BBC Sport. "Only time will decide how long it lives on in our memory."He's a sensational young man, with outstanding human and sporting characteristics, distinctive in whatever sport he played – an exceptional tennis player and an even better footballer."His presence always stands out over the other players, even the older ones, and he has an incredible shot on him."Indeed, Mastantuono's ability to strike the ball from range has caught the eye. Most notable was his free-kick against Superclasico rivals Boca Juniors in April, swept into the top corner from about 30 yards. That aside, the left-footer is agile, quickly shifting the ball one way and the other when dribbling. Such has been evident from the start."I remember he was restless behind the ball. But what I saw set him apart," says Marcelo Olariaga, the vice president of Club Atletico River Plate Azuleno, Mastantuono's first home. "Compared to the rest, he ran very lightly with the ball. But he always had it tied to his feet."Although the teenager often starts on the right wing, much of his impact comes in central positions. In River's first Club World Cup outing this summer, a 3-1 win against Urawa Red Diamonds, Mastantuono roamed inside and bent a pass to the left, eventually leading to Facundo Colidio's opening goal.As for the statistics, Mastantuono has featured 63 times for River, scoring 10 goals and assisting seven. At 16, he was the youngest to score for the Argentine giants with the famous red sash.Meanwhile, he is the youngest to feature competitively for Argentina's senior team, reaching that landmark against Chile earlier this month.
Mastantuono was born in Azul, a small city south of the bustling capital, Buenos Aires. He grew up in a normal area, with low houses and a square, where he enjoyed kickarounds."I remember Franquito as a young boy. His coach was his father, Cristian, and he went along with him," Olariaga says."He developed in the system with the luck of having his dad as a coach. A good cohort of players came through."Still, had football not taken over, he might have prioritised tennis – with those close to him aware of his skills while holding a racquet. The sport has helped shape Mastantuono's overall game."Through tennis, I've met a lot of people. Travelling around the country and competing in a sport where the mental aspect is so important has helped me grow as a footballer," Mastantuono said during an interview with Argentine outlet Olé in March. That mental fortitude helped him deal with the pressure of River's 85,000-plus seater Estadio Monumental, where the fans will miss his magic. He is, of course, not the only talent to roll off the River Plate conveyor belt. Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, Manchester City's Claudio Echeverri, and Manuel Lanzini, formerly of West Ham, matured at the Buenos Aires club.Olariaga believes that Mastantuono is at least on a par with those individuals, with much owed to his mentality – a cornerstone for every Real player – alongside his technique."Franco wasn't always a leader," says Olariaga. "He was a great team-mate. All the boys who played with him tell you he impacted them through his personality because he encouraged them. He always took the team on his shoulders in the difficult moments."How he's noticeably grown, dazzling you day by day, if his father were to say: 'The kid's destiny is to play for Real Madrid - what do you think?' Then I think, yes - because of his personality."
Madrid awaits - 'there's a risk with everything'
If there's a barrier, it's that Real coach Xabi Alonso - not afraid to blood youth players - has a wealth of options in attack, and instead needs deeper-lying midfielders to replace Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. It was, however, Alonso who helped convince Mastantuono to choose Real over other top European clubs."The way he spoke to me was incredible," said the teenager. "I'm incredibly grateful for that. The conversation was very influential because having the manager want you is a significant vote of confidence for a player."Leaving a club like River Plate isn't easy. His words really motivated me to make that leap. What's happening to me is unique and I'm very grateful for football and for life."Mastantuono, will need to dislodge the likes of Rodrygo, Arda Guler and Brahim Díaz for minutes. But given he's still to turn 18, he has time to improve."His areas for improvement will probably be physical - to gain weight and strength - and his understanding of pressing without the ball, as the top-tier European teams do," argues Tom Nash, co-host of the River Pod podcast.Evaluating the deal, Eduardo Ferreira, a football agent with experience in the European and South American markets, says: "There's a risk with everything."The player possesses a talent level, already demonstrated on the pitch, that is above average for players his age, so they will prepare and keep developing him in a much better environment."Real Madrid has a methodology for developing talent to minimise risks and has a proven record, done over and over again."From the player's perspective, it's a fantastic opportunity because, even if he doesn't deliver what Real Madrid expects, he will have opportunities at other good European clubs."(Martin) Odegaard was not ready for Real Madrid. But he became a great player for another good club (Arsenal). Time will tell if he becomes a player of that level."

'I can see what Arteta is trying to do here' - fan views on Norgaard

We asked for your views on whether Christian Norgaard is what Arsenal need and whether he'd be a good replacement for Thomas Partey if he leaves the club. Here are some of your comments:David: Not sure about this move. Feel that we need a more defensive player to take over from Partey and that might not be Norgaard. However, if Zubimedi comes in then I'd be happy to see Norgaard come What is the point of getting Norgaard, if Partey cannot be persuaded to stay (who is more versatile)? I thought Zubimendi was all but signed so Norgaard would be a bench warmer anyway. Waste of £ We've lost Jorginho and will probably loose Partey, so he will be a good backup to have in the Norgaard would be a great, cheap Jorginho replacement who would allow us to spend more on a They always want it cheap. This is the undoing of this club. Partey has been phenomenal, why not extend his contract? They'd rather go for something less, and ironically want to get greater results. Trophies will elude this team until they begin to do something different!Mason: I can see what Arteta is trying to do here. He's just lost Jorginho who's 33 and now could be losing Partey who is 32. Norgaard isn't the most exciting player to bring in, but he would be an older member of the squad with plenty of experience and wisdom that the younger players can look up to. You can't always have a squad of young players, it just wouldn't work.

Oscar Bobb determined to secure Man City future at Club World Cup

Oscar Bobb is determined to grasp his chance at the Club World Cup and prove he has a future at Manchester City. The promising Norwegian winger looked set to play a significant role in City's 2024-25 campaign after building on a positive end to the previous season by impressing on their summer tour. But his hopes of making a big first-team breakthrough were dashed when he fractured his leg in training last August. After an aborted comeback in February, he did not play again until April. Now back to full fitness, the 21-year-old has made two substitute appearances in the United States and is determined to establish himself in manager Pep Guardiola's new-look side. Guardiola, having already overseen the arrival of four new players this summer, has said some players are likely to leave before the new Premier League season, but Bobb does not plan to be one of them. Bobb said: 'I expect to be here. I think that's the way I have to look at it and try and impress every chance I get. 'I want to play as much as possible, be decisive and play in the big games. 'It's a fresh start for me as well as the team and I think from here on out we can just build. 'I think I'm ready now but we've got 27 players. If I get a chance to play – it doesn't matter for how long – I'll take it.' City are already assured of a place in the last 16 having won their opening two games in Group G by an aggregate score of 8-0. Yet they remain behind Juventus on goals scored and must beat the Italians in Orlando on Thursday to top the pool and avoid a meeting with the winners of Real Madrid's group in the next round. Although there is a possibility of thunderstorms, the match is set to take place in the hottest part of the day with the kick-off at 3pm local time, when the temperature is forecast to reach 32C. Bobb insists the team will be ready with preparations having gone well and spirits high at their training base in Boca Raton on Florida's south-east coast. He said: 'It's warmer than we're used to but it's the same for everyone. We're training in this heat and we just have to get used to it, because it will be like that. 'We've got a great hotel. There's lots to do. There's basketball, table tennis and obviously there's a lot of matches, so we stay watching them. 'I think it's been great to see teams from all over the world doing so well and a lot of competition, so it's been good.'

Jack Grealish Transfer Betting & Next Club Odds: Spurs favourites to land Grealish

Jack Grealish has made plenty of headlines since his £100m move from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2021 and is once again making the back pages amid reports of a move away from the Etihad Stadium for the 29-year-old. Betting sites have priced up the odds on Jack Grealish's next club as the England international considers his options after being left out of City's squad for the ongoing Club World Cup. The England international has been in and out of the City starting eleven since his arrival, and though his first season was difficult, his second could have hardly gone any better as he was a solid, reliable performer who was key to the club's treble win in 2022/23. But since then Grealish has found it increasingly difficult to earn a place in Pep Guardiola's starting XI, and it seems that he has fallen down the pecking order behind Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Omar Marmoush and others in the attacking positions. And with the 2026 World Cup approaching, it is believed Grealish could be looking for a move away from City as he aims to play himself into Thomas Tuchel's squad for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico next summer. So, with plenty of clubs said to be harbouring an interest in the former Villa man, we've sifted through a range of football betting sites to take a look at the odds on Jack Grealish's next club. Is Jack Grealish Leaving Man City? Nothing is certain in the transfer window, but the fact of the matter is that Grealish seems to have fallen out of Guardiola's thinking in the majority of games. Grealish was recently left out of the City squad for this summer's Club World Cup, though Guardiola later said: 'What happens I don't know but if he doesn't (leave) he is a player for Man City and he will be back.' The 29-year-old made only seven Premier League starts last season despite being available for most of the campaign, and made just 32 appearances in all competitions. Having not featured for England since October 2024, Grealish will likely be looking for a move as he looks to play his way into the squad for the 2026 World Cup. In any case, it's worth noting that Premier League betting sites have Grealish at around 12/1 to stay at City this summer. Why Isn't Jack Grealish Playing? Only Guardiola really knows why Grealish was benched so often over the course of the last two seasons, though there certainly seems to have been a shift in the way the Spaniard wants his wingers to play, with a more direct approach now preferred. And the arrival of additional wingers will obviously have played a part too. Both Jeremy Doku and Savinho hit the ground running upon their arrivals at the Etihad, with the Belgian in particular becoming a mainstay in the City starting eleven. Elsewhere, other recent additions such as Omar Marmoush have proven their capability at playing in various positions across the forward line, while Rayan Cherki has added to the club's attacking options this summer too. This leaves the England international with more questions than answers regarding his future ahead of the 2025/26 season. Jack Grealish Summer Transfer Odds Next Club Odds Bookmaker Tottenham 9/4 William Hill Napoli 7/2 Bet365 Fenerbahce 5/1 Bet365 West Ham 5/1 Bet365 Everton 5/1 Ladbrokes Aston Villa 6/1 BetVictor Newcastle 6/1 BetVictor Bayer Leverkusen 8/1 Ladbrokes AC Milan 16/1 William Hill Any Saudi Arabian club 14/1 William Hill Barcelona 33/1 Bet365 Arsenal 40/1 Betfred A large number of bookmakers are offering odds on Grealish's next club, with Tottenham seemingly the favourites for now at odds of around 9/4. Spurs seem to be targeting midfielders and wingers this summer, being linked with moves for Bryan Mbeumo and Ebere Eze, so Grealish is a signing that would seemingly fit within their summer targets, though little is known about the kind of fee City would demand. Napoli are another side known to be targeting wingers this summer, though odds of 7/2 seem a little short considering they added winger Dan Ndoye earlier this month. Fenerbahce, West Ham and Everton are all priced at 5/1 to secure the signing of Grealish, with the Turkish side having also reportedly targeted Jadon Sancho. The England international would be an upgrade for the majority of Premier League clubs, though it is unknown if he would be willing to move further down the table from City. Both Newcastle and former club Aston Villa would be a more suitable jump for the 29-year-old, and he may fancy a return to his former club after the Villans secured Champions League qualification. With Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers reportedly wanted elsewhere, the door could open for Grealish to make a comeback in Birmingham at odds of 6/1. Priced at 8/1, Bayer Leverkusen could be an interesting proposal for Grealish, with the German side looking for reinforcements after losing Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, though it is unknown if the Englishman would prefer to stay in the Premier League ahead of next year's World Cup. Outside shouts There are some intriguing propositions further down the list, with Grealish offered at 14/1 to join any Saudi Arabian club. However, this may hurt his World Cup prospects, so can probably be ruled out. AC Milan are priced at 16/1 to grab the Englishman, though their toils in Serie A might put him off, while Barcelona are further back at 33/1 and clubs including Real Madrid and Arsenal are offered at 40/1.
