A woman was duped of Rs 2.89 crore by cyber criminals posing as important government authorities, though prompt action by Mumbai police managed to retrieve Rs 1.29 crore, an official said on Thursday.
Between Monday and Wednesday, cyber criminals posing as Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) officials, police personnel as well as a judge, duped the 73-year-old woman, a resident of Vile Parle here, he said.
"In his WhatsApp call, the man posing as a TRAI official told the woman there were irregular financial transactions from her account. Another accused who posed as a policeman threatened that she was linked to a businessman being probed for fraud and said she would be put under digital arrest," he informed.
"The accused again made a video call saying a judge would help her avoid arrest. In this way, the accused made her transfer Rs 2.89 crore between Monday and Wednesday in order to avoid digital arrest. Soon, she realised she had been duped and intimated 1930 cyber helpline set up to help victims," he said.
After a case was lodged on the NCPR portal, the cyber helpline cell managed to retrieve Rs 1.29 crore from the Rs 2.89 crore that was transferred, the official said.

She alleged that according to her daughter, the three men spent the night in the forest with her and did 'wrong things' to her. The mother also alleged that she kept visiting the police station for four days, but her complaint was not heard. Station House Officer of Mohanganj Police Station Rakesh Kumar said Friday that based on the mother's complaint, a case has been registered against the three men under Section 137 (2) (kidnapping), 87 (kidnapping a woman and forcing her to marry) of the BNS and legal action is being taken. In the complaint, the mother has alleged that Ravi Kumar, Babadin and Rambachan lured and kidnapped her 16-year-old daughter. The victim's mother also alleged that her daughter took Rs 80,000 kept in the house. MLA Suresh Pasi, when asked about the case on Friday, said he had no information about the case. Ghaziabad: A special Pocso court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a five-year-old in Jan. The court deemed it a heinous crime against humanity and sentenced the convict under three different sections, along with imposing a Rs 1.7 lakh fine. The court pronounced him guilty on Thursday and sentenced him on Friday. Additional sessions court, Ghaziabad and special Pocso judge Neeraj Gautam said that as the case does not qualify under the 'rarest of the rare' category, the court is unable to award capital punishment to the convict. "However, in light of the fact that the perpetrator resorted to aggressive penetrative sexual assault on a five-year-old to satisfy his lust, killed her, and tried to conceal evidence, this court is awarding him the maximum possible punishment under the law," he noted in the judgment. The incident came to light after the minor's grandmother filed a missing report at Link Road police station on Jan 16, 2025. Appearing as one of the witnesses in the court, she said that her granddaughter went missing on Jan 15, around 10:30pm, while she was playing outside the house. 1 2 Panchkula: An international para-athlete and Haryana government officer, Rampal, has filed a formal complaint against his departmental colleague for allegedly defrauding him of over Rs 63 lakh in a property transaction. Rampal, who serves as deputy director in the department of sports and youth affairs, Haryana, alleged in an FIR that his colleague Narender, also a deputy director in the same department, deceived him under the pretence of selling a house in Sector 23, Sonipat.
