Temporary measures inadequate to prevent sea erosion in Chellanam: Janakeeya vedi

Kochi: Chellanam Kochi Janakeeya Vedi (CKJV) has said that temporary protective measures are inadequate to protect the coast from sea erosion. Construction of tetrapod sea walls, north of Puthenthodu, should begin as soon as possible for coastal protection, they said.

"Temporary barriers made of geobags currently implemented by govt are insufficient to prevent sea intrusion in Chellanam. As a temporary defence measure, 961m of geobag barriers are being constructed in areas facing strong sea intrusion, from north of Puthenthode Beach to Moorthy Temple. However, this is completely inadequate," said CKJV convener V T Sebastian.
In areas where geobag barriers were placed, sand dunes collapsed during sea intrusion, leading to water ingress.
Measures should be taken to protect sand dunes. Steps should be taken to obtain funds and soil from Cochin Port for coastal protection, identify currently vulnerable areas and prepare an action plan for defence, as temporary measures may lead to sea intrusion into northern areas. Construction of tetrapod sea walls north of Puthenthode should be completed as a long-term solution as soon as possible.
Immediate action should be taken to protect seven houses in serious condition at Cheriyakadavu.
He said that in 2023-24, 485m of geobag barriers were constructed in Chellanam at a cost of Rs 65.2 lakh. In 2024-25, it increased to 591m at a cost of Rs 69.59 lakh. In 2025-26, this will be increased to 961m at a cost of Rs 125.9 lakh. The extent and cost of temporary defences required are increasing every year, highlighting the severity of sea intrusion problem faced by the area.
