U.S. Open 2025: Rory McIlroy forced to take a drop after finding ditch on No. 9 at Oakmont
You know it's been a tough week when you've become an example for the rules of golf.
Unfortunately, that's where Rory McIlroy was about halfway through his third round of the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on Saturday.
McIlroy played his last four holes Friday at 2 under to sneak inside the cutline and punch his ticket to the weekend, and things were going quite well, comparatively, through eight holes Saturday.
That was until his ball found one of Oakmont's infamous ditches, this one along the left side on hole No. 9.
McIlroy opted to take a penalty stroke and a drop, leading to a bogey and capping off a 2-over 37 on the front nine. And of course, the USGA took the opportunity to educate you at home about what to do if you find yourself in the same position as the 2025 Masters champion.
McIlroy, No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is playing alongside World No. 3 Xander Schauffele for the third round. Players were dealing with extremely wet conditions Saturday after overnight storms brought torrential downpour to Oakmont.

Well, maybe some are just beginning to realize it as they tune into Sunday's final-round action of the 2025 U.S. Open. Caitlin Clark is among those viewers. In a social media post to X, the WNBA star made a hilarious remark as the world watches the best golfers on the planet stumble at Oakmont. "Is Oakmont even fun to play," she pondered. Most of us feel that way, Caitlin. Clark is enjoying the U.S. Open just a day removed from recording one of the best single-game performances of the season in the WNBA. She had 32 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, including seven three-pointers. Clark is a big-time golfer. At last year's RSM Classic, she participated in the pro-am, where she was paired with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and 2023 Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson, a fellow Iowan. "It is incredible. It was awesome to watch," Monahan said. "What really struck me was her love of the game. Clearly, her competitive spirit and fire come through."

After wrapping up U.S. Open in 67, Rory McIlroy eyes next 'Everest': Royal Portrush
Rory McIlroy addresses media Saturday at Oakmont, before Live From expresses their disappointment in his new short, cold approach to the media, with Paul McGinley saying something seems "not right" with the slam winner. OAKMONT, Pa. – Rory McIlroy wrapped up an otherwise uninspired week at the U.S. Open with a 3-under 67 — his best round by five shots at Oakmont — for some much-needed momentum headed into the year's final major. McIlroy struggled to rounds of 74-72-74 to begin the U.S. Open and completed his week before the final group teed off on Sunday. He was tied for 26th after his round. 'I feel like I've driven the ball well all week. After the way I drove it today, I'd say I finished in the top 5 in strokes gained: off the tee,' said McIlroy, who was actually third in strokes gained: off the tee and led the field in driving distance. 'Really encouraged with the driver and how I drove it as well. It's not necessarily the driver, it's more me and sort of where my swing was. 'I feel like I got a really good feeling in my swing with the driver, which was great.' McIlroy is scheduled to play next week's Travelers Championship, the season's final signature event on the PGA Tour, before heading to the United Kingdom for next month's Scottish Open and Open Championship, which will be played at Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush. The world No. 2 has struggled since winning the Masters in April and becoming just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. He finished tied for 47th at the PGA Championship and missed the cut last week at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy has talked on multiple occasions about the challenges of setting new goals following his career accomplishment in April. 'Look, I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you've got to make your way back down, and you've got to look for another mountain to climb. An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those,' said McIlroy, who missed the cut in 2019 the last time The Open was played at Royal Portrush.
