‘Adults' Is ‘Friends' for a More Anxious Generation
The FX series 'Adults' is the latest of many sitcoms to follow in the footsteps of 'Friends,' and it has several qualities typical of such shows: a vague title, a loose premise that is basically, 'People hang out.' The wrinkle with this one is that the pals are members of Gen Z, their brains poisoned with all the anxieties of their internet-obsessed cohort.
The first episode of 'Adults' is rough. The creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, Yale grads who have written for 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,' seem eager to make their pilot as taboo-breaking as possible. (In the main plotline, the group is jealous of an acquaintance for getting sexually harassed at work.) But the show quickly finds its rhythm and starts to define the characters beyond their relationship to hot-button issues. (The first two episodes premiere Wednesday on FX; the entire season arrives on Thursday on Hulu.)
These aimless 20-somethings all stay together in the Queens childhood home of Samir (Malik Elassal), an impulsive, awkward slacker. (His folks are traveling.) They are a motley bunch. Billie (Lucy Freyer) is a neurotic overachiever now flailing. Issa (Amita Rao) is talkative and oversexed with an inflated ego. Anton (Owen Thiele) forms fleeting connections with everyone but is resistant to finding something deeper. Eventually, Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), a gorgeous bisexual sweetie pie, moves in. Everyone calls him by his full name, 'Paul Baker.'
'Adults' starts to sing when it finds creative ways to exploit these roommates' quirks for comedy. A standout episode involves the gang realizing that Anton — who exchanges phone numbers with everyone he meets — may have accidentally befriended a local stabber. Later, Charlie Cox guest stars in a surprising and delightful turn as Billie's former high school teacher — she reconnects with him when she visits her old school in an attempt to relive her glory days. If you don't think Daredevil can be funny, watch Episode 6, in which he unleashes some impressive physical bits.
Set in New York but clearly not shot there — it was filmed mostly in Toronto — the show's strengths lie less in 'Girls'-esque verisimilitude than in ridiculous sitcom setups. 'Adults' is frank about sex and drugs, but it is best when it is just straight-up zany. While it seems unlikely to become a generation-defining sensation, once 'Adults' finds its groove, it is perfectly diverting TV.

Crews searching for man whose canoe tipped over on Schuylkill River in Pottstown, Pennsylvania
A man is missing after his canoe tipped over while on the Schuylkill River in Pottstown, Pennsylvania Sunday night. Officials said rescue crews were called to the 900 block of Industrial Highway near the Keim Street Bridge just before 9 p.m. on June 1 after getting reports of people in distress. According to Chester County dispatch, a canoe with two people inside tipped over and one person was able to make it to shore. Sources tell CBS News Philadelphia that another another man, who is in his 20s went under the water and didn't resurface. Crews from both Chester and Montgomery counties, along with Pennsylvania State Police, searched until about 2:30 a.m. Monday before calling off efforts for the night. Yarbrough's revenge: How a World Series ring inspired his win for the Yankees over the Dodgers
LOS ANGELES — Ryan Yarbrough picked up a dazzling World Series ring from his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Then he went out and beat them. The New York Yankees starter pitched one-run ball over six innings, struck out a season-high five and blanked the Dodgers' top four hitters in a 7-3 win Sunday night. 'I feel like I'm in a really good place right now and really trying to continue that,' Yarbrough said. 'I'm having a lot of fun.' The 33-year-old left-hander made 44 relief appearances between the Dodgers and Blue Jays last season. The Dodgers designated him for assignment on July 29 and the next day traded him to Toronto. So even though he wasn't around for their World Series victory over the Yankees last fall, Yarbrough earned a ring. He accepted it from Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes on Friday behind home plate during batting practice. 'Trying to keep that a little discreet, especially with where we're at now, but kind of cool to be able to get that,' Yarbrough said. He signed a $2 million, one-year deal with New York in March and is 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA this season. Making his first career start against the Dodgers, Yarbrough recorded 17 swings-and-misses — including seven with his sweeper. The top four hitters in Los Angeles' lineup had produced at least one hit in every game this season. That is, until Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith combined to go 0 for 14 in the series finale against Yarbrough and the Yankees. New York manager Aaron Boone has called Yarbrough a throwback, noting his 6-foot-5 frame creates a 'funky' angle for hitters. 'He's got a lot of ways to get you out. 'He's not going to light up the radar gun, but all his pitches feel like they get on you,' teammate DJ LeMahieu said. 'His fastballs look like they get on you and his off-speed looks extra slow. He's got good stuff and he knows what he's doing out there.' Yarbrough conceded his familiarity with his ex-teammates helped, too. 'It was just a matter of execution and keeping them off balance and not putting them in counts where they can really hunt for certain pitches,' he said. It was also a big night for LeMahieu, who had his first four-hit game since 2021. He drove in two runs and raised his batting average to .239.
