Commanders Defense Got 'Bigger and Stronger' in 2025

Commanders Defense Got 'Bigger and Stronger' in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
During the 2025 offseason, the Washington Commanders made several high-profile additions to their offense. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and left tackle Laremy Tunsil stole the show as the biggest acquisitions of the offseason.

But …
Washington made some shrewd moves on the defensive end as well.
And those moves have led defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. to believe the unit has gotten better than last year's mark.
'We're really excited about the guys that we added," Whitt said. "We wanted to get bigger and longer. We definitely did that up front. We did in the back end also with [CB] Trey [Amos].
"So, the vision of how we want to play and how we want to be and how we want to look, you're seeing more of it right now from a size and length and speed standpoint.'
Washington did lose free agents like safety Jeremy Chinn and edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. Both players were important to Washington's turnaround last season on the defensive end.

But with another year in their system, Washington is hoping the current group will get even better. They drafted Amos with their second-round pick and signed Javon Kinlaw, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Will Harris to free agent contracts.
These moves may not stick out quite like the Samuel or Tunsil trades, but they are important for the team in 2025.
And if this all works out … each addition on the defensive end may end up helping Washington reach the Super Bowl for the first time in decades.

Tyler Loop is already putting his big leg on display as he works to replace Justin Tucker

Tyler Loop is already putting his big leg on display as he works to replace Justin Tucker Ravens rookie kicker Tyler Loop has been booming 60 yard kicks and is having no problem adjusting to the NFL, per head coach John Harbaugh. Justin Tucker has an uncertain future in the NFL, and with his play diminishing, Baltimore decided to move on. The Ravens drafted a kicker for the first time in their 30-year history. Baltimore selected Arizona kicker Tyler Loop in the 6th round (No. 186 overall). Through three weeks of OTAs, Loop has looked like the best kicker on the roster, and he's left head coach John Harbaugh impressed by his big leg and efficiency. Loop went 6-9 on kicks from 50+ yards last season for the Wildcats and has arguably the biggest leg in this year's class, making a school record 62-yard field goal at Arizona and converting 63 of 80 career field goal attempts (83.8%). Tucker, 35, is a seven-time Pro Bowl player and the most accurate kicker in NFL history. He was the longest-tenured player on the Ravens and the last remaining player from their 2012 Super Bowl championship team.

double-a-gap-mug-nfl-offense

double-a-gap-mug-nfl-offense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Imagine walking up to a poker table and watching two players push all their chips to the middle before the dealer even flips the cards. That's what a double A-gap mug is. A bluff, a bet, and a dare — all at once, except with linebackers. Advertisement Popularized by Mike Zimmer in the early 2010s, the double A-gap mug became a go-to for defensive coordinators who were tired of sitting back and letting opposing offenses dictate everything. The quarterbacks who were well-prepared mentally could show up on game day largely stress free and knowing exactly what to expect. The result of the game (or at the very least the success of the offense) largely boiled down to execution. It's a much different game now and this is one of the three most significant ways defensive coordinators are taking things in their own hands. Here's the setup: two linebackers hover right over the center, lined up directly in the A-gaps (the spaces between the center and each guard). They're just standing there — staring the quarterback down like bodyguards outside the club. Advertisement But here's the kicker: they might blitz. They might drop back. One might go while the other stays. Or they might just force the center to slide protection that way, opening up chaos elsewhere. It's stress. It's confusion. It's control. And it's why your interior offensive line better be as solid as your blindside tackle. And how do the Dallas Cowboys combat all of this? Three ways ... 1 - Trust in the intellectual acumen of QB Dak Prescott? Check. 2 - Invest in guard play. Tyler Smith and Tyler Booker? Double-check. 3 - Rely on the creative experience of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, an offensive mind? We can't "check'' that box yet ... but we are hopeful. Advertisement In today's NFL, pressure doesn't always come off the edge. It comes right up the gut — sometimes disguised, sometimes delayed, and often times deadly. Defenses are no longer passive. They're aggressive. And that means the offense needs to be aggressive in fighting back. Bills See History Repeat Itself In 'Nightmare' Season Scenario

Bills See History Repeat Itself In 'Nightmare' Season Scenario originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills appear to be one of the genuine Super Bowl contenders in 2025, boasting a well-rounded roster and an MVP quarterback at the helm. Advertisement Josh Allen and the offense were blistering last season, but defensively, the team struggled. Hence, this offseason, that side of the ball was heavily targeted in free agency (Joey Bosa, Michael Hoecht) and in the draft (the first five picks were defensive players). So Sean McDermott's team is a lock for the playoffs, it seems, and one can easily envision a deep run, too, but what would make the 2025 season one from hell? For Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon, in what he calls a nightmare season, Buffalo again falls to the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason. "Considering it's happened four times in the last five years, another playoff loss to the Chiefs likely qualifies here," Gagnon writes. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen reacts to the Kansas City Chiefs' AFC Championship Game Medley-Imagn Images Considering the Chiefs are thought to be trending downward, and Buffalo upward, plus how each team's roster looks, if the Bills were to see their season end, for what would be a fifth consecutive time in the postseason by Kansas City, then that is the true definition of a nightmare. Advertisement And it is one that Allen likely won't ever be able to recover from when being talked about among the best quarterbacks. Even now, with four straight losses, it's hard, but make that five? It might be even tougher. Everything seems in place for the Bills to finally break through and win what would be their first Lombardi Trophy, while the Chiefs appear to be starting to regress. Which is why if the Bills stumble to their rivals again on the biggest stage, when they really shouldn't, that is nightmare fuel for the franchise.
