USA Today26-05-2025

Who will Auburn baseball play in this week's Auburn Regional? Auburn is ready to host an NCAA Regional for the third time in four seasons.
Auburn baseball has locked in a regional host seed for the third time in four seasons, and has now learned its opponents for the 2025 Auburn Regional that will begin this weekend at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.
The Tigers will welcome NC State, Stetson, and Central Connecticut to Plainsman Park for this weekend's Auburn Regional. Stetson and Central Connecticut enter the NCAA Tournament by winning their respective conference tournaments while NC State finished fourth in the ACC with a 33-19 overall record, and a 17-11 record against conference foes.
Auburn grabbed the No. 4 overall seed in this year's tournament, which puts them in position to host a super regional should they handle business this weekend on the Plains. The Tigers join fellow SEC teams Vanderbilt, Texas, and Arkansas by grabbing a top-four seed, with LSU and Georgia also grabbing a top-eight seed from the conference.
Auburn baseball returns to the regional host seat after taking a giant step forward in 2025. After missing postseason play in 2024 with a 27-26 overall record and an 8-22 mark in SEC play, Auburn finished the 2025 season 20-games over .500 (38-18), and winning 56% of its games against SEC competition at 17-13. The Tigers bumped its overall team batting average 26 points from .276 in 2024 to .302 this season, while also improving its totals in home runs, runs scored, and strikeouts.
The biggest improvement came in pitching, where Auburn made giant strides in every major category. Auburn lowered its ERA from 5.94 in 2024 to 4.76 in 2025. Auburn also struck out 59 more batters this season while issuing 29 fewer walks. Auburn's opponents' batting average dropped 40 points from .286 to .246.

Westburg, Urias power Orioles to 10-1 win over Tigers

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles pulled away to a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Zach Eflin (6-2) allowed a run over 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory. Keegan Akin struck out pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones to strand two and escape the seventh when it was a one-run game. Ramón Urías hit a two-run shot off Casey Mize (5-3) before the Orioles got going against the Tigers' bullpen. Gunnar Henderson singled in a run off Tyler Holton in the seventh. Then Cedric Mullin got the eighth started with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee before scoring on a wild pitch. Ryan O'Hearn followed with a two-run double off Beau Brieske, before Westburg hooked Brieske's 1-0 offering around the left-field foul pole. Colt Keith provided the Tigers' run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After Keith's double cut it to 2-1, Detroit inserted Dillon Dingler to pinch hit with runners on second and third. Eflin induced Dingler into a sharp grounder to third, and Urías fired home in plenty of time for Adley Rutschman to tag out Wenceel Perez as the potential tying run. Key stat Eflin has now posted a 1.47 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers (18 1/3 IP, 3 ER). Up next Detroit's reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16 ERA) looks for his first consecutive wins since mid-April after allowing only one run across his last three starts (23 2/3 IP). The lefty faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (5-6, 4.98), who walked a season-high four batters and allowed five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 7-0 loss at Detroit on April 27. ___ AP MLB:

Contract details for rookie DL Walter Nolen III and what people are saying about him

Contract details for rookie DL Walter Nolen III and what people are saying about him Howard Balzer breaks down Nolen's rookie deal and shares what people are saying about the Cardinals' first-round pick. There have been only eight practices this offseason with the final one of minicamp Thursday, but Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Walter Nolen III has been receiving rave notices from teammates and coaches. Also important is that Nolen signed his rookie contract this week, a four-year deal, with a fifth-year option worth $19,367,550 guaranteed and includes a signing bonus of $10,725,492. His salary-cap charge in 2025 is $3,521,373. The contract includes minimum base salaries each year ($840,000 this year; $1.005 million in 2026, $1.12 million in 2027 and $1.235 million in 2028. However, his pay in those final three years will be larger because of roster bonuses payable on the fifth day of training camp. That money for first-round picks has often been included in the base salary, but the bonus gets it in their hands earlier than it being prorated over the 18-week season. Those bonuses are $715,343 in 2026; $1,480,686 in 2027 and $2,246,029 in 2028. Now, about those accolades for the player selected with the 16th pick of the draft. Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis reflected on coaches watching a big screen in defensive backs coach Patrick Toney's office on draft night and how he was 'just hoping that we would be able to get Walt. Obviously super excited about the player that he is, the guy that he is.' As for what he's seen in the brief work so far, Rallis said, 'I knew he was gonna be the talent that we saw on tape. I would say he's very coachable, great to work with. You see him take those coaching points immediately to the field, whether that's in individual or when going against the offense. And I can tell he studies hard outside the building because he's got things down pretty fast. So pretty impressive so far.' Fellow lineman Dalvin Tomlinson, signed as a 31-year-old free agent this offseason, said Tuesday, 'I love his quickness, his pass rush. I saw him in some drills and stuff today in our team period. He's just fluid like it comes natural to him and as we progress in training camp with pads on, he's just a natural good defensive tackle. It's just like the sky is the limit for him. And I'm happy I'm part of the process to help him continue to improve.' Last year, the Cardinals selected defensive lineman Darius Robinson in the first round at 27 overall. Both are from the SEC with Robinson playing for Missouri and Nolen for Mississippi. 'I love it,' Robinson said after the first OTA practice on May 28 about the addition of Nolen. 'He was on the other side of the SEC, so I never played against Walt. But I know he's going be a great player, great teammate. Like last week he brought everybody Epsom salts, the Dr. Teal's bag. So it just shows you he's a high-character young man and he's a really good teammate. So I'm excited to make some plays with him.'
