They are widely regarded by the international media as the toughest exams in the world with nine hours of testing spread over two or three days.
Our only question is: have they not heard of the Leaving Cert?

Today, thousands of students sat an intensive French exam followed by a gruelling history exam. That wasn't unusual: most candidates face two three-hour exams on multiple days over the course of the Leaving. A very small number, on occasion, have had three exams in a single day due to subject clashes.
It's around now, in particular, that students may be feeling the emotional and physical toll of it all.
The State Examinations Commission says it is mindful of 'candidate wellbeing' and has extended the exam timetable in recent years to a 15-day timetable.
'The extended timetable has been designed to alleviate pressure on candidates by eliminating subject clashes as much as possible,' it says. 'There has been a very particular focus on ensuring that there is a minimal chance that a candidate will have to take three examinations on one day.'
The only bright spot on the horizon is that Leaving Cert reforms, due to roll out over the coming years, will result in fewer exams and more continual assessment.
Too late, unfortunately, for the class of 2025.
The best advice for students for now is to maintain a healthy routine: get enough sleep, eat well, stay active and taking regular breaks.

For parents, the best advice is to keep being the calm in the storm; encourage short-term focus; celebrate the small wins; and remind them that there are many, many routes to success beyond the Leaving Cert.

Otherwise, in ideal conditions – and assuming the aircraft was flying across a flat landscape with no hills or tall buildings in the way – the pilots had a slim chance of keeping it in the air and saving it. This is also based on non-deployment of flaps being a factor in the aircraft's dire predicament. Tragically, as amateur footage from the scene in western India suggests, the plane 'pancaked' and dropped almost vertically to the ground after the nose was elevated. This is similar to a manoeuvre called a flare, which pilots perform when landing. When the aircraft is almost on the runway, they raise the nose slightly to eradicate lift and make it drop the remaining short distance on to the tarmac. The area of the wings is extended to increase aerodynamic lift at relatively slow speeds while taking off and to enable an aircraft to safely make low-speed landings. These wing extensions are known as flaps and they slide out from underneath the rear of the wing before take-off. They are retracted back into the wing when the aircraft has reached sufficient altitude and speed before entering the phase of flight known as 'the cruise'. Without sufficient extension of the flaps, an aircraft that is fully loaded with passengers, luggage and fuel will struggle to reach altitude. That is what happened to a Spanair jet which failed to take off and ran off the runway at Madrid Airport in 2008, killing 154 people. Investigators found that the pilots had failed to extend the flaps. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that a warning buzzer had failed to sound in the cockpit to alert the pilots to their mistake. Raising the nose inappropriately was a contributing factor to the crash of an Air France A330 off the coast of Brazil in 2009. It caused the plane to enter a stall from which the pilots could not recover. All 228 on board were killed. A second theory for the loss of the Air India Boeing 787 on Thursday is a bird strike against both engines, causing them to fail. This could explain the account of one witness who said he heard a loud bang a few seconds before the aircraft crashed. However, as professional air-crash investigators will attest, eyewitness accounts are notoriously unreliable. The replaying of the cockpit voice recorder aboard the Air India flight will reveal two important details. First will be if the pilots correctly followed the take-off checklist, which includes procedures for deploying the flaps. One of the pilots will read out the items on the checklist, while the other one confirms that they have been carried out. The second thing investigators will listen for is whether or not a cockpit warning was sounded to alert the pilots that the flaps had not been deployed. Final confirmation of flaps deployment will come from a second black box, the flight data recorder, which records all of the pilots' actions and the mechanical results aboard the aircraft. – Gerry Byrne is an aviation journalist

Our Leaving Cert parent diarist Damian Cullen wrote last week of how the family kitchen table has been commandeered by his daughter for the duration of the exams. T-squares, a laptop, King Lear textbooks, highlighters, plastic folders and dog-eared notes all occupy the space where family dinners were once had. A well-received business exam followed by an accessible art paper on Thursday afternoon got a thumbs up from most teachers and pupils. But we were stuck by this message from a student who sat Wednesday's history exam, which was the subject of much criticism . 'I wanted to email you to discuss the devastating experience that was the Leaving Cert history paper yesterday,' the student writes. 'I am a H1 student who studied well over 32 essay titles across 12 large topics for this year's Leaving Cert. I have given countless hours to the subject and have consistently averaged a H1 at 95 per cent throughout all my class tests and scored 96 per cent on my history mock ... 'To say that everyone was devastated opening the paper would be an understatement. I have never seen the swarms of students leaving the hall who would be scoring the top grades alongside me, left utterly demoralised from the ridiculous essay titles offered across the sections. We have the most thorough and excellent history teacher and yet we were left completely shaken by the choice on the paper ... 'Many people left well over an hour early, and those who did leave were left extremely upset in the corridors. For many of us this was our first noncore subject exam, leaving us rather shaken at what the next few exams will bring.' Our heart goes out to her – it is a very distressing experience. All we can say is that 'hard' exams do tend to get marked easier by examiners. This is due to the bell-curve that is used to ensure there are a similar proportion of H1s, H2s, and H3s, etc. Nonetheless, it is clear the paper was exceptionally difficult in what is a punishing subject to prepare for. There is delicate balance to be struck by exam-setters in pushing students to display their full range of skills and knowledge – and trying to catch students out. This is one where, on occasion, it felt like the latter for many – let's hope the rest of the exams offer a smoother path ahead for all. - How are we doing?
