NBA: Tearful Doncic scores 45 on return to Dallas as Lakers clinch playoff spot - Omni sports
Luka Doncic shrugged off the raw emotion of his return to Dallas with a dazzling 45-point display against his former club as the Los Angeles Lakers downed the Mavericks 112-97 to punch their ticket to the NBA playoffs on Wednesday.
Doncic, who joined the Lakers from Dallas in February in one of the most shocking trades in NBA history, was given a rousing reception by Mavs fans packed into the American Airlines Center to pay tribute to their former hero.
A pre-game video montage was screened in the arena just before Doncic was introduced to the sellout crowd of 20,841 fans, many wearing t-shirts bearing the words "Thanks for Everything", written in the 26-year-old's native Slovenian.
Doncic visibly teared up as he watched the tribute, and looked distraught as he was comforted by Lakers team-mate LeBron James moments before tip-off.
But after that emotional pre-game ceremony, Doncic quickly snapped into game mode, swiftly getting into his scoring groove to give Mavericks fans a painful reminder of the generational talent that was traded away by the club.
Doncic scored 14 in the first quarter alone, and added a further 17 in the second period to help the Lakers into a 60-57 half-time lead.
Doncic's rate of scoring slowed in the second half, leaving James to produce a trademark fourth quarter burst to close out victory.
But there was still time for Doncic to sign off in style, nailing an imperious three-pointer to push the Lakers into a 108-94 lead shortly before exiting the game to a standing ovation.
The applause swiftly morphed into chants of "Fire Nico" -- a reference to the Dallas general manager Nico Harrison who has been roundly criticised by Mavs for engineering the trade which sent Doncic to Los Angeles in exchange for Anthony Davis.
'So many emotions'
Doncic later admitted he had struggled to maintain his composure during the pre-game ceremony.
"I don't know how I did it because when I was watching that video I was like 'There's no way I'm playing this game'," he told ESPN. "But all my teammates had my back and were really supporting me.
"There were so many emotions I can't even explain. It brought tears to my eyes. I came here as a young kid, aged 18, and they made me feel like it was home. Just a lot of great memories.
"I love these fans, I love this city but it's time to move on."
The victory means the Lakers, who improved to 49-31, can clinch third seed in the Western Conference if they win one of their final two regular-season games.
Doncic's 45 points included seven three-pointers from 16-of-28 shooting, while James finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
In other games on Wednesday, the battle for playoff places in the Western Conference took an unexpected twist with the already-eliminated San Antonio Spurs scoring an upset 114-111 win over the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco.
Harrison Barnes' 27-foot buzzer-beating three-pointer snatched victory for San Antonio, who had trailed by 12 points at the start of the fourth quarter.
The defeat leaves Golden State's hopes of grabbing one of the three remaining playoff spots in the Western Conference in a precarious position. The Warriors dropped out of the top six with the loss.
Elsewhere, the Denver Nuggets' first game since the shock firing of coach Michael Malone on Tuesday saw the team halt their four-game losing streak with a 124-116 defeat of the Sacramento Kings. Denver are fourth in the standings with a 48-32 record.
The red-hot Los Angeles Clippers continued their march up the table after extending their winning streak to six games with a 134-117 win over the Houston Rockets, who have already clinched second place in the West. The Clippers (47-32) are fifth, with Memphis sixth.

James had hit the post in the first half with a stinging shot shortly after United defender Harry Maguire had the ball in the Chelsea net, only for VAR to rule it marginally offside. United had few other chances, and Chelsea were tense but dominant for most of the match. The result lifted Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League above Aston Villa, who earlier beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0, with one game left in the season for both sides. "The Champions League is where the club belongs, competing in the best competitions," James said. The top five in the table qualify for the Champions League, which has been Chelsea's target since Enzo Maresca took over as coach at the start of the season. Relieved Maresca and his bench as well players and fans celebrated wildly at the final whistle. It was the last home game of the season for Chelsea whose form has run hot and cold under since the Italian took over, and they circled the ground with a lap of honour before leaving the pitch. Their last game is away to Nottingham Forest, who lie seventh and are still chasing qualification, next weekend. United, whose target after a woeful season, is winning the Europa League final against Tottenham next Wednesday, are 16th.

NBA: Nuggets rout Clippers to advance in NBA playoffs - World
The Denver Nuggets dominated the Los Angeles Clippers 120-101 in the do-or-die game seven of their NBA playoff series on Saturday to set up a second-round clash with Western Conference top seeds Oklahoma City. Aaron Gordon scored 22 points, Christian Braun added 21 and NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic had 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Nuggets, whose balanced attack and stout defense was too much for the Clippers. The Clippers -- who roared into the playoffs winning 18 of their last 21 regular-season games -- had fended off elimination with a convincing game-six victory on Thursday. But any momentum they had evaporated amid another dismal performance from James Harden. Harden scored just seven points, connecting on two of his eight shot attempts. Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points to lead the Clippers, who emerged from a tight first quarter with a 26-21 lead. It briefly looked like it would be another close game between teams that finished the regular season with identical 50-32 records. But the Nuggets put up 37 points in the second quarter to seize control and continued to pile it on in the third, when a 17-0 Nuggets run pushed the lead to 75-50. The Nuggets led 93-66 going into the fourth quarter, and even with Jokic sitting down after he was whistled for his third, fourth and fifth fouls late in the third period the Clippers could make no meaningful inroads. The Nuggets led by as many as 35 points. They out-scored the Clippers 54-42 in the paint and with a 46-36 advantage in rebounds grabbed 22 second-chance points to the Clippers' 10. "Everybody came to play," said Nuggets guard Jamal Murray, who scored 16 points. "Everybody was ready, the home crowd was into it and we were able to get the job done." Russell Westbrook rubbed it in against his former team, coming off the bench to score 16 points with five rebounds, five assists and five steals. He underscored his message midway through the fourth quarter, coming up with a steal, racing for a dunk and then hanging on the rim to purposely draw a technical foul and using the moment to rile up the crowd even more. The Nuggets have advanced despite a tumultuous finish to their regular season, with David Adelman taking over as interim head coach when Michael Malone was sacked with just three games left. Thunder up next They also went a long way toward erasing the memory of a game-seven collapse in the second round last season, when they blew a 15-point halftime lead and lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves to see their NBA title defense end. Inter Miami, without Messi, loses 1st MLS game of season - World
Inter Miami lost its first MLS game of the season Sunday with Lionel Messi watching from a private box as FC Dallas scored three unanswered goals in the second half for a 4-3 victory. Inter Miami squandered a two-goal advantage and slipped to 5-1-3, with 18 points. Inter Miami lost at Vancouver in the first leg of its CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal round on Thursday. Messi played all 90 minutes of Miami's 2-0 loss. With the teams playing the second leg in Miami on Wednesday, the 37-year-old Messi playing Sunday seemed unlikely. Pedrinho scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute to cap the comeback for Dallas (4-3-3, 15 points). Logan Farrington retrieved a ball before it crossed the backline and centered to an open Pedrinho, who converted from 15 yards. Goals from Osaze Urhoghide and Anderson Julio within a five-minute span midway through the second half tied it at 3. Allen Obando put Miami ahead with a goal in the 29th minute. Picault centered a pass to Obando inside the 6-yard box where he tapped in a shot for his first Miami goal. Miami signed the 18-year-old Obando on loan from the Ecuadorian first division in March. David Martinez padded the lead for Miami with a goal in the 56th minute. He retrieved a loose ball on the left wing and converted with a shot that landed inside the right post. Dallas struck first on Shaq Moore's goal in the eighth minute. Moore retrieved a loose ball and blasted a shot from 18 yards that landed high inside the left post. In addition to Messi, his former Barcelona teammates Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba didn't play Sunday.
