Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn signs a 1-year deal to stay with his only NHL team

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has signed a one-year contract to stay with the only team he has played for in his 16 NHL seasons.
'Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,' general manager Jim Nill said Thursday.
The deal has a base salary of $1 million, plus an additional $3 million in potential performance bonuses. This past season was the end of Benn's $76 million, eight-year contract extension.
"There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season," Nill said. "We are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.'
Hall of Fame center Mike Modano is the only player in franchise history with more than Benn's 1,192 regular-season games, 399 goals and 956 points. He has played in 120 postseason games.
Benn, who turns 36 on July 18, had 16 goals and 33 assists in 80 regular-season games. It was the 13th time in his career to be over 40 points in a season, though he had only one goal and two assists in Dallas' 18 postseason games.
The Stars have been to the Western Conference final three seasons in a row but haven't been to the Stanley Cup Final since 2020. Their only Stanley Cup title was in 1999.

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw inched closer to 3,000 career strikeouts on Thursday, fanning five in six innings in a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw (4-0) has 2,997 strikeouts in his 18-year career, three short of becoming the 20th major leaguer to reach the milestone. The 37-year-old would be the third active pitcher to reach the mark behind Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. Verlander, in his 20th season, has 3,468 strikeouts. Scherzer has 3,412 in 18 seasons. 'I knew I had eight to go,' Kershaw said. 'Eight in Colorado is never going to be easy to do. I felt good. But pitched well, got through six. A chance to strike out three at home would be really cool.' Kershaw's next start is expected to come at Dodger Stadium next Wednesday (July 2) against the Chicago White Sox. 'He's certainly competing, making pitches,' manager Dave Roberts said. 'I think he has gotten better each time out, even with not the best of stuff. He just found a way to be efficient.' Kershaw struck out three in the first two innings Thursday and got his fourth for the final out of the fifth. He struck out Tyler Freeman for the second out of the sixth inning and left the game after retiring the next batter. He threw 69 pitches, 41 for strikes. 'You always want to be efficient, no matter what,' Kershaw said. 'My days of throwing 115 pitches is probably over. Getting through six is probably the biggest thing at Coors Field. 'Doc (Roberts) is doing a good job of protecting me, which I appreciate. I just want to be able to go back out there every fifth, sixth day. Whatever that means is good for now.' Kershaw recorded two strikeouts on his 73 mph curve and got three more on sliders against a Rockies' lineup that included all right-handed batters. 'He did what he needed to do,' Roberts said. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and 10-time All-Star received plenty of crowd support in Colorado, getting a standing ovation from some in the Coors Field crowd when he left the mound after the sixth inning. Kershaw had made eight starts this season after being activated from the injured list May 17 following offseason left knee and foot surgeries. 'He has given us a shot in the arm,' Roberts said. 'We're sort of ailing on the starting pitching side. Coming in and giving us valuable innings. I just love that kind of edge that he gives on start day. We certainly feed off that.' Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter shoot Rocket Classic-record 62s to share 1st-round lead
DETROIT (AP) — Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter each shot 10-under 62 on Thursday to break the Rocket Classic record and share the first-round lead. Detroit Golf Club has been one of the easiest courses since the PGA Tour made it an annual stop in 2019. A pair of Korn Ferry graduates took full advantage. Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, started at No. 10 and set a tournament record with a 7-under 29 on the back nine. He added three birdies on his back nine and caught the left edge on a 12-foot putt on his final hole. Potgieter and the 35-year-old Roy each had an eagle and eight birdies in bogey-free rounds. As well as Roy and Potgieter played, they can't get comfortable on a short course with greens that are even more receptive than usual with recent rain. Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard were a stroke back after matching the previous tournament record of 63. Andrew Putnam shot a 64, and two-time major champion Zach Johnson was in the group another shot back. While the course is easy as usual, the competition is relatively strong for the tournament that many top players have skipped in the past.
