Eight soldiers, civilian killed in separate attacks in Pakistan — police

PESHAWAR: At least eight soldiers and a civilian were killed in western Pakistan on Friday in separate attacks along the border with Afghanistan, where violence has erupted in recent months, police told AFP.
Seven soldiers were killed in a security operation against 'armed Taliban' in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a police source said on Saturday.
'Fighters hiding in a house fired on security forces,' the source said.
The army deployed combat helicopters during the hours-long fight, killing eight Taliban fighters, while six other soldiers were wounded, the source said.
A blast from a bomb planted by separatists on a motorbike also killed a soldier and a civilian further south in Balochistan, police officer Mohsin Ali told AFP.
The area was the scene of a spectacular attack last month when militants held hundreds of train passengers hostage and killed dozens of off-duty soldiers.
Three soldiers and a civilian were also wounded in the blast that took place as a military vehicle drove through Gwadar district, a sensitive area that hosts substantial Chinese infrastructure.
More than 190 people, mostly soldiers, have been killed in attacks since the start of the year by armed groups fighting the government in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to an AFP tally.
The Pakistani Taliban — known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — announced in mid-March a 'spring campaign' against security forces.
Last year was the deadliest year in almost a decade in Pakistan, with more than 1,600 people killed in attacks — nearly half of them security forces personnel — according to the Islamabad-based Center for Research and Security Studies.
The violence is largely limited to Pakistan's border regions with Afghanistan.

Pakistan's deputy PM speaks with Iranian official as Tehran launches retaliatory strikes on Israel

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with his Iranian counterpart on Friday as Tehran launched a retaliatory missile strike on Israel following deadly Israeli attacks on nuclear facilities and senior military commanders. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel on Friday night as dozens of Iranian missiles struck the country in a dramatic escalation of tensions. Explosions were heard throughout Jerusalem and plumes of smoke were seen rising in Tel Aviv after apparent strikes. While no casualties were immediately reported, the Israeli military ordered residents nationwide into bomb shelters. The latest attacks came after Israel carried out a wave of airstrikes across Iran, reportedly killing at least three top Iranian military officers and targeting nuclear facilities and ballistic missile sites. Israeli military officials said 200 fighter jets were involved in the operation, which struck more than 100 locations in what analysts described as the most significant assault Iran has faced since its war with Iraq in the 1980s. The Pakistani deputy PM held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, as the war escalated between the two Middle Eastern rivals. 'Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar @MIshaqDar50, today spoke with the Foreign Minister of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi @Araghchi,' the Pakistani foreign office said in a statement. 'Condemning the blatant Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran in total disregard of the UN Charter and international law, DPM/FM reiterated strong support of Pakistan to the Government and brotherly people of Iran for achieving peace and stability in the region,' it added. Dar also conveyed 'deepest sympathies on the loss of many precious lives during Israeli attacks,' according to the statement. Earlier in the day, the Pakistani foreign office said Israel had violated Iran's sovereignty and that the attacks were 'contrary to the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law.' It warned the escalation posed 'a serious threat to regional peace and security,' adding that Iran had the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Dar, writing on X, described the Israeli strikes as a 'brazen violation' of Iranian sovereignty and said they 'gravely undermine regional stability and international security.' 'Pakistan stands in solidarity with the government and the people of Iran,' he wrote. He also said the foreign ministry had established a 24/7 Crisis Management Unit to ensure the safety and security of Pakistani nationals and pilgrims in Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the condemnation and called on the international community and the United Nations to 'take urgent steps to prevent any further escalation that could imperil regional and global peace.' Israeli military spokesperson Defrin said all air defense systems had been activated in response to Iran's retaliation and the country expected 'difficult hours ahead.' In Washington, the US administration said it had not been involved in the Israeli operation. 'Israel took unilateral action against Iran,' US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement released by the White House. 'Our top priority is protecting American forces in the region.' Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry also condemned the Israeli strikes. 'The Kingdom condemns these heinous attacks and affirms that the international community and the Security Council bear a great responsibility to immediately halt this aggression,' the Saudi statement said. Airlines cleared out of the airspace over Israel, Iran, Iraq and Jordan on Friday following the strikes, according to Flightradar24 data, as carriers scrambled to divert or cancel flights to ensure passenger and crew safety. Iran closed its airspace and Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport was shut down until further notice. Israeli military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said tens of thousands of soldiers had been called up and deployed across all borders. 'We are amidst a historic campaign unlike any other. This is a critical operation to prevent an existential threat, by an enemy who is intent on destroying us,' he said. With inputs from AP and Reuters

Pakistan urges religious devotees to postpone travel to Iran, Iraq amid regional tensions

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday advised its citizens planning religious travel to Iran and Iraq to reconsider their plans, citing security concerns after Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities earlier in the day. The advisory mentions Pakistani 'Zaireen,' or Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims who travel to Iran and Iraq to visit sacred religious sites, particularly in Mashhad, Qom, Najaf and Karbala. The region has seen heightened tensions following Israeli attacks on key installations in Iran, prompting fears of broader instability. 'In view of the evolving security situation in the region, the Zaireen from Pakistan are advised to reconsider their travel plans to Iran and Iraq,' the foreign office said in a brief statement issued in Islamabad. According to a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the number of Zaireen traveling to Iran fluctuates, and most do not contact the Pakistani diplomatic missions. 'Currently, there are an estimated 5,000 Zaireen in Iran,' he said, adding that Pakistan's embassy in Tehran and its consulates remain available to assist citizens. 'Any Pakistani requiring guidance or support is encouraged to contact our relevant diplomatic missions, which will, as always, provide necessary assistance and facilitate their return to Pakistan,' the official added. While no evacuation plans have been announced, the authorities say they are closely monitoring the regional situation.

Pakistan prepares for Joint Ministerial Commission with UAE to deepen trade ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday held a preparatory meeting for the upcoming 12th session of its Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the state media, as the government seeks to strengthen economic and trade relations with the Gulf nation. The JMC is the primary bilateral platform for institutionalized cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE, focusing on trade, investment, energy, labor and consular matters. After remaining inactive for several years, it was revived recently to accelerate high-level economic engagement. The preparatory meeting, according to Radio Pakistan, was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who also serves as the foreign minister of the country. 'Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has reiterated Pakistan's firm commitment to strengthening Pak-UAE economic and trade relations,' the report said. 'He made the remarks while chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Friday to review preparations for the upcoming 12th session of the Pakistan-UAE Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) in Abu Dhabi,' it added. Radio Pakistan said discussions during the meeting focused on advancing key bilateral initiatives, formalizing collaboration in existing sectors, exploring new avenues for cooperation and attracting mutually beneficial UAE investments in priority areas. The UAE is Pakistan's third-largest trading partner. Its proximity to the South Asian state helps minimize export costs, particularly for perishable goods. Pakistan has increasingly sought stronger economic partnerships with Gulf nations to strengthen its economy amid improving macroeconomic indicators. The UAE has supported Pakistan during recent economic crises, including by maintaining deposits with the State Bank of Pakistan and helping Islamabad unlock critical IMF loan tranches. So far, the government has not officially announced any date for the 12th JMC session, though it is expected to help expand bilateral economic cooperation.
