AUDI, Not Audi: A New EV Sub-Brand Prepares for Launch
Audi has been a staple of China's luxury car market for decades, but with local automakers gaining ground, the German brand is shifting gears. To stay competitive, Volkswagen Group is launching a China-exclusive sub-brand called AUDI — yes, in all caps — focused solely on electric vehicles. The first production model will be revealed at Auto Shanghai on April 23, marking the beginning of an ambitious plan to establish AUDI as a major player in the world's largest car market.
Unlike the Audi models sold globally, AUDI vehicles won't feature the brand's iconic Four Rings emblem. Instead, the cars will sport a bold 'AUDI' script across the front, signaling a new identity. This isn't just a marketing tweak — these models are being developed in collaboration with SAIC, a major Chinese automaker, allowing for faster development times and designs tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.
The first AUDI model will be a production version of the AUDI E concept, which debuted last year. While official details remain under wraps, the concept hinted at a sleek, wagon-like EV with a tech-heavy interior, minimal physical buttons, and an expansive screen layout. With a wheelbase longer than the A6 Avant, it's expected to offer generous interior space while maintaining a stylish, sporty design.
The E concept showcased impressive specs: a 100-kWh battery offering up to 435 miles (700 km) of range under China's optimistic CLTC test cycle. It also featured an 800-volt architecture for ultra-fast charging, allowing the battery to gain 230 miles (370 km) of range in just 10 minutes.
Dual motors delivered 764 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-62 mph sprint in just 3.6 seconds. If these numbers carry over to the production version, AUDI could make a strong impression in China's growing high-performance EV market.
The upcoming debut isn't just about one car — AUDI has bigger plans. Over the next two years, the sub-brand will introduce at least two more models: an SUV and a Sportback. These vehicles will share the same Advanced Digitized Platform co-developed with SAIC, benefiting from a streamlined production process that has reportedly reduced development times by 30%.
Audi is no stranger to offering exclusive models in the region. The brand already sells long-wheelbase versions of its sedans and SUVs tailored to Chinese buyers' preferences. However, AUDI represents a more significant step, as it's an entirely separate sub-brand designed to cater to younger, tech-savvy consumers in an increasingly competitive EV market.
The launch of AUDI comes at a time when Audi's overall sales in China have dipped, falling 10.9% in 2024 to 653,016 units. With domestic brands like BYD dominating the EV space, legacy automakers must evolve quickly to keep up. The success of AUDI will depend on how well it resonates with Chinese buyers, but if the concept's specs are anything to go by, it could give VW Group a much-needed boost in the market.

China's proposed 'super embassy poses a super risk', the Tories have claimed as they warned the project risks compromising communications infrastructure serving the City of London. More than a thousand demonstrators took to the streets of central London earlier this year to protest against the proposed embassy. Ministers are expected to make a final decision on the redevelopment plans at the historic former site of the Royal Mint, after it was rejected by the local council, Tower Hamlets. Speaking in the Commons, shadow Cabinet Office minister Alex Burghart accused the Government of being 'too weak' to block the plans. He said: 'The Government's own cyber experts, Innovate UK, have warned the Government that the proposed Chinese embassy at the Royal Mint threatens to compromise the telephone and internet exchange that serves the financial City of London. 'The experts are now telling the Government what everyone else has known all along: the super embassy poses a super risk. 'Yet the Deputy Prime Minister's office has said that any representations on the planning application have to be made available to the applicants. 'So perhaps the real Deputy Prime Minister can clear this up – is the Government seriously saying that if MI5 or GCHQ have concerns about security on this site, those concerns will have to be passed to the Chinese Communist Party or has the Deputy Prime Minister (Angela Rayner) got it wrong?' Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden replied: 'When it comes to both engagement with China and with an issue like this, we will of course engage properly and always bear in mind our own national security considerations.' He also accused Tory governments of opting to 'withdraw' from engaging with China for a number of years after they had previously sought a 'golden era' with Beijing. A spokesperson for Innovate UK said it 'has not raised any concerns', adding: 'Innovate UK does not have responsibility for cyber security.' Comments referred to by Mr Burghart are understood to have been made in a personal capacity. Mr Burghart went on to say: 'At the heart of this are two simple facts. First, the Government already knows that this site is a security risk; it's a security risk to the City of London and through it our economy and the economies of all nations that trade in London. 'Second, the Government has the power to block it. Ireland and Australia have both already blocked similar embassy developments. Why is this Government too weak to act?' In his reply, Mr McFadden said: 'A decision on this application will be taken in full consideration of our national security considerations. That is always part of this and it is part of our engagement with China and with other countries.' Chancellor Rachel Reeves flew to China in January to meet with the country's leaders and set out a path towards further investment into Britain. Elsewhere in Cabinet Office questions, Mr McFadden said the Civil Service should be more representative of the UK and speak with 'all the accents of the country'. This came in response to Labour MP for Dudley, Sonia Kumar, who said: 'I welcome the relocation of the Civil Service across the country and with a recent study showing that Dudley has high levels of economic inactivity, what reassurances can (he) give me that young people in Dudley want every opportunity to build their career in the Civil Service, whether that's training, apprenticeships, or any mentorships?' Mr McFadden replied: '(Ms Kumar) will not be surprised to hear my strong enthusiasm for greater employment opportunities for young people in the Black Country. 'When we made the announcement last week about the relocation, we also announced a new apprentice scheme because we don't just have to change location, we have to change recruitment patterns too if we're really going (to) get that Civil Service that speaks with all the accents of the country.' Later in the session, Conservative MP Lincoln Jopp (Spelthorne) asked for reassurance that 'no Cabinet Office ministers will be attending Glastonbury this year', because 'controversial Ulster rap band' Kneecap remain part of the festival's line-up. Mr McFadden replied: 'I will not be going to Glastonbury, but I'm very much looking forward to going to see Bruce Springsteen at Anfield Stadium on Saturday night.'

The Galaxy A7 Is Not a Samsung Phone, But a Sedan With a Huge Range
We rarely cover cars sold exclusively in China, but we're willing to make an exception on occasion if there's a compelling reason. Geely's latest product meets the criteria with its unusual name, impressive driving range, and the simple fact that it's not another SUV. Roughly the same size as a Toyota Camry, this large sedan is called the Galaxy A7, a name that immediately brought to mind Samsung's namesake smartphone from a few years back. Side note: Samsung actually made cars in Korea through a joint venture with Renault. Beyond the unexpected Samsung connection, the Galaxy A7 also evokes thoughts of the Audi A7. In China, Audi offers two versions of its luxury car: the familiar A7 Sportback, a five-door liftback built by FAW, and the lesser-known A7L sedan , which features a traditional trunk. The latter is built by Audi's other local partner, SAIC. Geely's A7 looks upscale enough to compete with cars bearing the fabled Four Rings. Photo by: Geely Although our Chinese may be a bit rusty, one detail about the car stood out: a driving range of more than 2,100 kilometers (1,305 miles) on a full tank and a fully charged battery. It's an impressive figure, though it's worth noting it's based on the lenient China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). The Galaxy A7 is a plug-in hybrid that pairs a small 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with an electric motor. Geely claims a combined fuel consumption of just 2 liters per 100 kilometers, a whopping 117.6 miles per gallon. Reports from China indicate Geely will offer the Galaxy A7 with multiple lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery options, supplied by CALB and CATL. The largest will be an 18.99-kWh pack, enabling an electric-only range of 75 miles (120 kilometers), again based on the CLTC standard. In terms of size, the car measures 193.6 inches (4918 mm) in length, 75 inches (1905 mm) in width, and 58.8 inches (1495 mm) in height, with a generous 112 inches (2845 mm) wheelbase. It ticks nearly all the boxes for 2025 car trends: front and rear light bars, a massive center screen, and minimal physical controls. The Galaxy A7 comes with 17- to 19-inch wheels and weighs up to 3,825 pounds (1,735 kilograms) in its heaviest configuration. That translates to around $14,000–$18,000, highlighting just how far ahead China is in minimizing production costs while still turning a profit. The Galaxy A7 will be manufactured by the company that owns multiple brands, including Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, and Farizon. Geely also owns half of Smart, 49.9% of Proton, 17% of Aston Martin, and a 9.69% stake in Mercedes, through its founder and chairman, Li Shufu.
