Republican Congresswoman Miller Criticizes Sikh Prayer, Mistakenly Identifies Cleric As Muslim

Giani Singh, a Sikh religious leader from New Jersey, was misidentified by GOP's Mary Miller in a now-deleted social media post. US Republican lawmaker Mary Miller has drawn sharp criticism from both Democrats and members of her own party after she wrongly identified a Sikh religious leader as Muslim and said he should not have been allowed to lead the daily prayer in the US House of Representatives. Giani Singh, a Sikh granthi from southern New Jersey, delivered the House's morning prayer on Thursday after being invited by Congressman Jeff Van Drew. Following this, Miller posted on X (formerly Twitter) saying it was 'deeply troubling a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House." She added, 'This should have never been allowed to happen," and claimed that the United States was 'founded as a Christian nation" and that its government should reflect that. Miller later edited the post to refer to Singh as Sikh and then deleted it altogether. Her comments triggered widespread bipartisan outrage despite the deletion of the tweet. Rep. Mary Miller says in a since-edited post it was "deeply disturbing" that a "Muslim" led morning prayer in the House (it was actually a Sikh man, Giani Singh, who'd been welcomed by Rep. Jeff Van Drew) — Nicholas Wu (@nicholaswu12) June 6, 2025 'She looks darn ignorant," one Republican House member told Axios, the US news agency that first reported the development. Another Republican, Nick LaLota, said, 'A Sikh prayer on the House floor doesn't violate the Constitution, offend my Catholic faith, or throttle my support for Israel. Live and let live". Congressman Van Drew, who invited Singh, said in a statement that respecting all faiths is central to American values. 'As a Catholic, I take my faith seriously and I also believe part of being American is respecting other people's faiths too," he said. 'The Sikh community is peaceful, generous, and deeply rooted in family and service, values we should all appreciate". Miller, a right-wing conservative with a record of controversial remarks, has faced backlash before. In 2021, she said 'Hitler was right on one thing" while speaking about youth, a statement she later apologised for. In 2022, she referred to the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a 'victory for white life," which her office later claimed was a misreading of prepared remarks. First Published: June 07, 2025, 19:34 IST

₹500 crore railway station upgradation project likely to resume soon, says Visakhapatnam MP

Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat has announced that the ₹500 crore railway station upgradation project, which was stalled for the past eight months due to a court stay, is expected to resume soon. He confirmed that railway authorities have received directives to restart the work, which is projected to be completed within 18 to 21 months. As part of the development, six additional railway lines will be added, increasing the total to 14. Addressing a press conference here at the party office on Saturday, Mr. Sribharat also noted that the Union government has appointed a General Manager for the South Coast Railway Zone, who will be assuming charge shortly. He expressed optimism that this move would accelerate development of both headquarters and other pending railway projects in the region. Soon, a gazette notification may also be issued, he said. Highlighting the upcoming events, Mr. Sribharat said that the district administration is making elaborate arrangements for International Yoga Day event on June 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and other dignitaries are expected to attend. The event aims to set records with a turnout of 3.5 to 5 lakh participants, stretching from RK Beach to Bheemunipatnam. Reflecting on his first year as an MP, Mr. Sribharat described it as a valuable learning experience. He also announced that the government would soon launch the 'Thalli Ki Vandanam' scheme, offering free bus transportation for women. Metro Rail Project The MP also informed that the Metro Rail Project is under the DPR stage. The authorities concerned have also called for detailed design bids, for which around 20 design consultants have expressed their interest. MLC Chiranjeevi Rao said that the appointment of a GM for the South Coast Railway Zone demonstrates the NDA government's commitment to fulfilling its railway promises. He criticised the previous YSRCP government for failing to allocate land for the railway zone headquarters during its tenure. He said that under the NDA, key projects like the Polavaram Project and Amaravati Capital development are being revived. Mr. Chiranjeevi Rao also highlighted significant educational reforms being implemented under the leadership of IT Minister Nara Lokesh. Former MLA and Visakhapatnam TDP president Gandi Babjee was among those present.

CAG figures paint a disturbing picture of Andhra Pradesh's finances, says YSRCP president Jagan

YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has said that the monthly key indicators released by the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) for April 2025 bring to light a 'very disturbing picture' of the State's finances. The government claimed on May 1 that the net GST collections for April 2025 were the highest since the introduction of GST at ₹3,354 crore, whereas, technically, the net GST would be subsequent to the making of all adjustments, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said. In fact, as per the CAG figures, the State GST revenues for the first month of FY 2025-26 had contracted to 24.20% when compared with that of April 2024, he said. The government also said the GST revenues were at a record high even in May. It was mentioned in a government release that in April 2025, the Centre had deducted ₹796 crore on account of adjustment of advance apportionment from Integrated GST (IGST) and because of it, GST revenues had come down. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that the advance apportionment of IGST would be accounted for under Minor Head 110 and was a part of SGST under Major Head 0006 of the government accounts. The net GST revenues would be arrived at after accounting for all the adjustments. Same was the case even in the previous years. The press release issued by the government on May 1 said that the net GST collections for April 2025 stood at ₹3,354 crore. Now, the government said a sum of ₹796 crore was adjusted. 'One can clearly understand from this that the government is covering up the sordid facts about the GST revenues,' he said. The CAG figures indicated that the trend of economic sluggishness was more pronounced during the first month of FY 2025-26, with the tax revenues registering a decline of 12.21% and non-tax revenues falling by 22.01% over April 2024, he added.
