The Repair Shop approached to fix stolen Chatham WW1 memorial
A Kent priest says she has asked BBC programme The Repair Shop to help restore her church's damaged World War One memorial.Christ Church Luton in Chatham reported to the police on Saturday that two plaques commemorating 163 people from the parish who died in the war were missing.Kent Police recovered both plaques from separate Essex scrapyards by Thursday but one is substantially broken.Priest in charge the Reverend Andrea Leonard told BBC Radio Kent she had "applied to The Repair Shop to see if they might be able to help" repair the damage.
"We will definitely either have it mended or get a replacement at some point because that plaque can't just disappear forever, just because of someone's thoughtlessness," she said.Both 93kg (205lbs) plaques, which are 105 years old, are now back in possession of the church, but one has been partly cut up."It will be a jigsaw for someone and a bit of restoration work, but I'm sure it must be possible," Ms Leonard said.
Eighth arrest made
Kent Police arrested seven men aged between 22 and 51 from the Dartford and Medway areas in connection with the theft, who have since been bailed.A 38-year-old man from Chatham became the eight person arrested over the matter on Friday.Officers have also seized a Range Rover, the force said.PC Alanya Spiller said Kent Police had been "really focused on recovering these two items" and work on "bringing those responsible for the theft to justice" was ongoing.Ms Leonard praised the efforts of officers.She said: "Some of them worked four hours beyond their shift to get that plaque."They rushed to a scrapyard and just stopped it from going on a shipment elsewhere."

But, as with every top club, Delap will need to get used to being at the heart of club vs country tug-of-wars whenever international and domestic duties overlap. Trade Secretary to meet US counterpart in bid to secure steel tariff exemption
The meeting will come after Mr Trump said he was doubling tariffs on imports of steel from 25% to 50%. The UK struck a deal with Washington for import taxes on its steel to be removed weeks ago, but its implementation has not been finalised. Trade officials and negotiators are planning to speak to the US as soon as they can to understand the implications of Mr Trump's latest steel tariffs. They want to secure a timeline for the UK-US deal to be implemented as quickly as possible in the coming weeks. Jonathan Reynolds will meet US trade representative Jamieson Greer to discuss timings for the deal to be in place when both attend the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) meeting in Paris next week. Earlier this week, a federal court blocked many of the sweeping Trump tariffs imposed on imports from countries around the world, but left some in place, including those on foreign steel and aluminium. On Thursday, a federal appeals court said it was allowing Mr Trump to continue collecting import taxes for now. On Friday, Mr Trump announced he would double the tariff rate on steel to 50%, starting on June 4. A Government spokesperson said: 'The UK was the first country to secure a trade deal with the US earlier this month and we remain committed to protecting British business and jobs across key sectors, including steel. 'We are engaging with the US on the implications of the latest tariff announcement and to provide clarity for industry.' The agreement, known as the economic prosperity deal, is expected to be presented to Parliament before it comes into force.

Bristol axes the Knowledge after only eight taxi drivers pass
Bristol has axed the Knowledge test for taxi drivers after only eight passed the quiz. Council officials said the 'outdated' test, which requires drivers to learn road names and locations to get their passengers to their destinations quickly, had become a 'barrier'. Figures revealed that just eight of 133 people taking it in Bristol this year managed to pass. Drivers have to answer at least 75 out of 100 questions correctly and must also achieve a minimum pass mark in all 10 categories – four or five out of 10 questions in each. A report to Bristol city council's public safety and protection committee, the 90-minute test was described as 'outdated'. Test 'should prioritise safety' In November 2023, a decision was taken to update Department for Transport guidance, with the committee report making it clear that topographical knowledge was no longer needed. It said: 'Given the availability, reliability and ease of use of sat nav systems, licensing authorities should not require any topographical knowledge or navigational tests for private hire vehicle drivers.' Instead, the report recommended that the sections that should stay in the test should prioritise safety, including child sexual exploitation, general road safety, along with how to calculate change, policy and legislation, and equality. The committee further suggested the test needed to be strengthened with a wider range of questions and topics which protect public safety, including disability awareness, planning routes using navigation devices, conflict avoidance, and also what steps to take if they face racial abuse, abusive comments or hate speech. The Knowledge was first introduced in 1865 as a requirement for taxi drivers, and it takes between three or four years to master the test. Drivers are taught precise locations and routes to hotels, pubs, restaurants and clubs, along with places of interest or the district of a particular road.
