Smokey Robinson under criminal investigation after sexual assault claims

BBC News16-05-2025

Motown legend Smokey Robinson is under criminal investigation in Los Angeles over accusations of sexual assault. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed it had launched a formal inquiry into the allegations, saying the probe was in the "early stages". The investigation comes after a lawsuit was filed last week by four anonymous housekeepers against the 85-year-old singer-songwriter, accusing him sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence and gender violence.Mr Robinson has denied the allegations. His lawyer has said those behind the accusations are after the musician's money, and he welcomed the police investigation "because exposure to the truth is a powerful thing".
"We feel confident that a determination will be made that Mr Robinson did nothing wrong, and that this is a desperate attempt to prejudice public opinion and make even more of a media circus than the Plaintiffs were previously able to create," the attorney, Christopher Frost, said in a statement to the BBC. He argued the police investigation was only opened because the plaintiffs filed a formal report with their allegations and said the claims were "manufactured" and designed to "tarnish the good names" of the musician and his wife, who is also named in the lawsuit and accused of contributing to a hostile work environment. The sheriff's department told the BBC in a statement that its Special Victims Bureau was "actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson AKA 'Smokey Robinson.' The investigation is in the early stages, and we have no further comment."The women filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on 6 May under the pseudonyms Jane Doe 1, 2, 3 and 4.In the 27-page legal action, they allege several incidents that they say dated back to 2006, and accuse Mr Robinson of pressuring them into sex.All four women, who are of Hispanic descent, said they had not come forward until now because they feared losing their livelihoods, familial reprisal or embarrassment. Some were concerned the allegations could affect their immigration status. They are seeking at least $50m (£38m) in damages and a jury trial.Mr Robinson was Motown's first hitmaker, writing number one records like Mary Wells' My Guy and The Temptations' My Girl.He was both a talent scout for the record label and one of its most prominent recording artists in his own right, known for songs like Tracks of My Tears, Shop Around and Tears of a Clown. He has spots in both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and claims to have credits on more than 4,000 songs. The women's lawyers held a press conference last week after filing the lawsuit, accusing Mr Robinson of being a "serial and sick rapist" who "must be stopped".Mr Robinson's legal team called the event a "bizarre" attempt "to enlist the public as an unwitting participant in the media circus they are trying to create"."We will have more to say in the coming days as we make our legal response, and in time Mr Robinson will respond in his own words," Mr Frost said, noting that the musician's legal team plans to ask for the case to be dismissed. "We ask anyone following this case to reserve judgment as the evidence comes to light and all the actual facts of the case unfold."

Teenager killed at Sol Duc Falls in Washington after slipping on rocks

An 18-year-old man has died after slipping and falling at a popular tourist attraction in Washington. The teenager, whose identity hasn't been released by authorities, was walking across the rocks at the top of the 50-foot Sol Duc Falls when he lost balance, according to the National Park Service. Witnesses told park rangers that the teen fell into the water and resurfaced at the bottom of the falls before fully submerging on June 8. The Olympic National Park Search and Rescue Team responded to the tragedy, using thermal imaging to scan the water as a ground team searched the riverbanks. His body was found pinned between two falls one day later, and the park was closed to initiate the rescue mission. On Tuesday, SAR teams collaborated with local authorities, including Forks Ambulance, Forks Swiftwater, Olympic Ambulance, Clallam County Fire District 2, the Port Townsend and Sequim Police Departments, and the Clallam County Sheriff's Office to safely recover the teen's body. Port Townsend Chief of Police Thomas A. Olson told that their department assisted with drones, but the victim had been located before their arrival. The National Park Service said that the rescue mission was complicated due to recent high temperatures and rapid snowmelt that created high river flows in the area. The teen fell in a dangerous area with 50-foot cliffs covered in algae and a strong whirlpool at the bottom of the falls. The area where authorities responded was also in a narrow canyon with a strong water flow. The National Park Service also noted additional hazards downstream from the area and said rescue operations would begin when the river conditions 'allow for a safe and successful recovery.' reached out to the NPS for an update on the search, but didn't immediately hear back. Deputy Coroner Rebecca Shankles with the Clallam County Coroner's Office told that the NPS is the investigating agency and information on the victim's identity would be released by the park. A post claiming to be the victim's cousin said the victim had just graduated HS and had been accepted at Baylor University. 'The son of a Pastor, he was out in the world for the first time in his life and paid with his life for a tragic mistake,' they wrote. 'Every parents worst nightmare happened, they got that knock on the door from the Police. 'He was deeply loved and the void his parents, his 14 yr old sister and grandma feel is immense. 'A special heartfelt thank you for the NPS personnel and all the teams of rescue people who found and recovered his body so his parents can bring their boy home.' Sol Duc Falls has an elevation of 200 feet with a hiking trail of 1.6 miles, round-trip, according to the Washington Trails Association. The falls split into at least four channels and cascade down a 50-foot, narrow, rocky canyon. As of Wednesday, the WTA listed the trail as closed to the public until further notice. reached out to the Clallam County Sheriff's Office for additional information on the case, but didn't immediately hear back.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce coverage at Stanley Cup Final leaves NHL fans seething

The coverage of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attending Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday night has left hockey fans seething. Instead of plans publicized days in advance of the 14-time Grammy Award winner attending a sporting event, her and the Kansas City Chiefs star's appearance in Sunrise, Florida for the NHL title-series contest was only apparent about an hour before puck drop. Yet, coverage from TNT has shown Swift and Kelce more than any average fan, as the duo hung out in a luxury suite. It is a rare time in public for the couple, who have been staying low-key since February's Super Bowl loss for Kansas City. Kelce has a home in the area, where he and Swift have been spending time in between his offseason activities for the Chiefs. Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, and NHL fans at-large were not thrilled with seeing the couple multiple times on their television screens.

Larsa Pippen reveals real reason her relationship with Marcus Jordan ended

Larsa Pippen explained exactly why her romance with Marcus Jordan came to an end on The Real Housewives of Miami season seven premiere. The 50-year-old TV personality was in a tumultuous relationship with NBA icon Michael Jordan's 34-year-old son from January 2023 until July 2024. Looking back on her on-and-off involvement with Jordan, Larsa revealed her four children gave her the strength to leave for the third and final time last year. 'When I was with Marcus, my kids were like, "Stop getting back together and breaking up, and just get off the ride." That's when I was like, I need to get away from the situation — my kids think that it's not good for me,' she shared during a conversation with her mom. Pippen shares Scotty Jr., 24, Preston, 23, Justin, 20, and Sophia, 16, with ex-husband Scottie Pippen. She opened up, 'We went from really being in love, getting along, to me seeing a side of him that didn't really align with who I am as a person. When we would go out, he would like to be the very last person in the club. Like, I mean, there's no one there but the janitors.' Elsewhere in the conversation, Larsa divulged, 'I'm kind of used to being alone now. Especially if you're with the wrong person, it's definitely better to be by yourself.' 'I don't want to have to address it. It's so embarrassing,' Kim Kardashian's former close friend cried to her mom in the episode. In a confessional interview she elaborated, 'I fought everyone to be with this guy, and then it was not a good situation for me and my family, so I had to remove myself from it. 'But doing what's best for me and my family ended up pissing him off so bad that he'd send me really bad messages and reach out to my friends and say hurtful things about me, and it was just bad.' Larsa and Marcus' relationship quickly came under scrutiny for their nearly 20-year age gap, as well as his connection to her ex-husband Scottie, who is his famous father's former Chicago Bulls teammate. The mom-of-four shared her side of the split, lamenting on RHOM, 'It's really hurtful that he's talking s*** about me publicly. It's f**ked up because I've done nothing but be nice to him and be there for him and all of his stupid f***ing issues.' Her up-down relationship with the ex college basketball star has been a sore point in her friendship with castmate Lisa Hochstein. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bravo (@bravotv) Hochstein's boyfriend Jody Glidden is still on speaking terms with Marcus, leaving her in the middle. 'That's really what annoys me a lot, the Lisa thing,' Larsa stated in the episode. 'Because like, if I tell my friends I'm going through a lot with this person and I just want to move forward and remove a toxic person from my life, and you can't understand that as my friend... I feel like that's kind of why I'm mad at her,' she stressed. Sharing her perspective, Lisa said the exes' unstable past confused her. 'The thing with them is, they go from breaking up to making up, to breaking up. I just felt like, I don't need to make him an enemy,' she said in her defense. After some time insisting they were 'just friends,' Larsa and Marcus exposed themselves as romantic partners when they were spotted kissing in Miami in early 2023. The former flames were first spotted together in September 2022, immediately prompting relationship rumors. In January 2025 the troubled former UCF Knights basketball star was arrested for cocaine possession after he drunkenly got his Lamborghini struck on a train track in Florida. Following her split from Jordan, Larsa has moved on with Jeff Colby, another young athlete who is 20 years her junior.
