BREAKING NEWS Major US city that's on volcano watch is rocked by near-5.0 magnitude earthquake

Daily Mail29-04-2025

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck just miles from an Alaskan city already on alert for a possible volcanic eruption.
The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the tremor near Hope at 12:03am local time (4:03am ET).
The epicenter was located south of Anchorage, where thousands of residents reported feeling light shaking.
Anchorage sits about 78 miles from Mount Spurr, which continues to show signs of unrest with elevated seismic activity and increased gas emissions.
'Felt it from 45 miles north of Anchorage—first heard the building creak, then came a solid shake followed by a slight rolling motion at the end,' one local shared online.
Residents across the region have been warned to 'stay alert for aftershocks and follow local emergency guidance.'

U.S. Open underway as Oakmont awaits tournament favourite Scheffler

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania, June 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Open began under partly cloudy skies on Thursday at challenging Oakmont Country Club where Bryson DeChambeau hopes to make a fast start to his title defence while tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler was hours from teeing off. Amateur Matt Vogt, a former Oakmont caddie and current full-time dentist who qualified for the U.S. Open last week, had the honour of hitting the tournament's opening tee shot from the par-four first hole. Two-times U.S. Open winner DeChambeau, who went close at the year's first two majors, will set out at Oakmont in the company of British Open champion Xander Schauffele and Spain's Jose Luis Ballester at 7:29 a.m. ET (1129 GMT). World number one Scheffler, who counts the PGA Championship among his three wins in his last four starts, will head out in the company of two-times major winner Collin Morikawa and world number 14 Viktor Hovland at 1:25 p.m. ET. Oakmont, a quintessential U.S. Open venue where punishing ankle-high rough frames narrow fairways that lead to slick greens, is expected to be a brutal test of skill, mental toughness and resilience this week. Rory McIlroy, who has struggled off the tee since completing the career Grand Slam of golf's four majors with his Masters win in April, is scheduled to start from the 10th tee at 7:40 a.m. ET in the company of Shane Lowry and Justin Rose. Notable players going out in the afternoon when temperatures at Oakmont are expected to reach 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30.6 degrees Celsius) are Dustin Johnson, who won the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

Two dead in Australia after torrential rain ravages rural towns

SYDNEY — Flash flooding on Australia' s southeast coast has killed two people and cut off towns, isolating tens of thousands of residents, as officials warned Thursday that more downpours were expected over the next 24 hours. Major flooding hit several rural towns in the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, with most of the Mid North Coast region facing further heavy rainfall through Thursday. Police said the body of a 63-year-old man was found in a flooded home near Taree, more than 186 miles north of Sydney, while another body believed to be that of a missing man in his 30s had been discovered in floodwaters on the Mid North Coast. 'We're bracing for more bad news in the next 24 hours. This natural disaster has been terrible for this community,' New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said during a media briefing. 'There's 140 flood warnings, 50,000 people are in the range where they have been asked to prepare to evacuate and could be isolated, and there's been 9,500 properties in the direct vicinity. So, we're far from out of the woods here.' Two men and one woman have been reported missing in separate incidents, authorities said earlier. More than 100 schools were closed on Thursday, while thousands of properties remained without power. Cundletown in the Mid North Coast has been entirely cut off by floods, said Nicole Sammut, a nurse caring for 67 elderly residents at an aged care home, which is also being used as a shelter by emergency teams. 'I came to work on Tuesday and haven't left,' Sammut told Reuters. 'We are up on a hill but behind us is all water. We are isolated. I've never seen the water this high.' The Manning River in nearby Taree had exceeded a 100-year-old flood record, emergency authorities said. Sherinah Peck was evacuated at 2 a.m. on Wednesday (12 p.m. Tuesday ET) from her farmhouse on the river, but her belongings were swept away, with some furniture later washing up on the coast. As she searched Old Bar beach on Thursday, strewn with debris and dead and lost livestock, for a treasured bicycle that belonged to her late mother, Peck was knocked over by a cow and injured, she said. 'The cow was distressed — a wave came. I had to scramble up the sand,' she told Reuters. A slow-moving coastal trough has dumped about four months of rain over the past two days, cutting off entire towns and stranding residents on roofs and the second floors of their homes, as rescuers struggle to access the area by boat or air. Minns apologized to people who had to wait for several hours for rescue crews, but assured that efforts had been ramped up with 2,500 emergency services personnel being deployed. Twenty-two people had been rescued by helicopter, including 18 winched from flooded homes and roads, and four rescued from a bridge, NSW Police said. The helicopters have been directing more boat rescues. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology forecast that some areas could receive up to 8 inches of rain through Friday, triggering life-threatening flash flooding, before the weather system is expected to weaken and track south toward Sydney.

Magnitude-4.2 earthquake shakes Big Island of Hawaii

A magnitude-4.2 earthquake rumbled just offshore of the Big Island of Hawaii on Tuesday morning, but officials said no tsunamis were expected. The earthquake was about 5 miles southeast of the community of Pāhala, just off the southern shore of the Big Island, at 9:37 a.m. local time (3:37 p.m. ET), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The office of Gov. Josh Green said on X, "A local earthquake has occurred — 4.0 magnitude off the Ka'u coast of the Big Island. Shaking may have been felt in some areas, but No Tsunami was generated." The USGS said the quake was unlikely to produce damage. "No damage to buildings or infrastructure expected based on earthquake intensity," it said. It received about 40 reports from those who said they felt the earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey measured it at magnitude 4.2. It said the depth was roughly 20 miles below the ocean's surface. The earthquake shook amid a series of small quakes in the region in the last few days that ranged in magnitude from 1.5 to 2.3. Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island remained active last week, with the USGS logging several events as the Halema'uma'u crater erupted, spewed lava and vented steam. "The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes," the USGS said. The area has been the location of multiple small earthquakes, what the USGS describes as a "seismic swarm," since 2019. "Earthquakes in this region have been observed at least as far back as the 1960s," it said.
