Two women who died after being pulled from Eryri pools named

Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, were pulled from pools on the Watkin Path – which leads to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon – on Wednesday June 11. Inquests into their deaths are due to be opened on Wednesday by the coroner for North West Wales. Last week, a spokesman for North Wales Police said officers were called to Nant Gwynant, Gwynedd, at about 9.30pm after a report that one woman had been pulled from the water and another was said to be in the pools. The second woman was pulled from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene. A Llanberis mountain rescue team was sent to the area along with an air ambulance and a coastguard helicopter. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Gibson, of North Wales Police, said: 'Our thoughts and sympathies remain with the families and friends of both women. 'An investigation to establish what happened is now under way.' He appealed for anyone walking in or around the Watkin Path area between 6pm and 9pm on June 11 to contact police. Chairman of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, Jurgen Dissmann, said: 'On behalf of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the two women who sadly lost their lives. 'This was a complex and difficult callout for the team and we would like to thank our emergency service colleagues and Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team for their continued support and assistance during this callout.'

TSB's Spanish owner considers sale of UK banking business

Banco Sabadell, which is currently seeking to defend itself from being taken over by a major rival, said it will weigh up any potential offers for TSB. In a regulatory filing, the banking giant said it received 'preliminary non-binding expressions of interest for the acquisition of the entire share capital of TSB.' TSB currently runs around 175 branches across the UK. It comes a decade after Sabadell bought TSB for £1.7 billion to gain a foothold in the UK, a year after Lloyds had spun off TSB in a stock market float. Last month, TSB saw first-quarter profits nearly double thanks to cost-cutting and improved mortgage lending ahead of April's stamp duty deadline. The lender posted pre-tax profits of £101.3 million for the first quarter, up from £53.4 million a year ago. The Financial Times reported that potential bidders for TSB could include Barclays, NatWest, Santander UK and HSBC. The potential disposal comes as Sabadell seeks to rebuff a potential hostile takeover by Spanish rival BBVA. BBVA has launched an 11 billion euro (£9.4 billion) move to take control of Sabadell and plans to put this offer in front of shareholders in the coming months. The potential sale of TSB is the latest in a flurry of recent dealmaking moves in the UK banking sector. On Monday, Metro Bank shares jumped after reports it had attracted a takeover approach from investment firm Pollen Street Capital. Meanwhile, Santander has reported pushed back bids from NatWest and Barclays to buy its UK retail bank.

Smriti Mandhana returns to number one in the ICC Women's ODI Player Rankings

India batter Smriti Mandhana has reclaimed the number one position in the ICC Women's ODI Batting Rankings. The 28-year-old rose one slot, returning to the top for the first time since November 2019. South Africa's captain Laura Wolvaardt, slipped to joint-second place (shared with England's new captain Nat Siver-Brunt), following innings of 27 and 28 in the first two ODIs against the West Indies. This gave way to Mandhana, who now sits comfortably with 727 ratings points to the runners' ups' 719, ending Wolvaardt's more than six-month long perch at the top. Wolvaardt's teammate, Tazmin Brits advanced five places to 27th thanks to her half-century in the first match of the three-match series, which is currently levelled after South Africa bounced back from their opening, four-wicket loss to beat the hosts by 40 runs in the second match in Barbados over the weekend. In other movements, former Proteas captain, Suné Luus, struck 76 in the second match to gain seven places to 42nd in the batters list and rose seven slots to 42nd in the bowlers list. The West Indies' opener Qiana Joseph's innings of 60 in their first match saw her leap 12 slots to joint-67th place. Spinners, Afy Fletcher and Nonkululeko Mlaba, made the most significant gains in the bowlers list, progressing four and six places respectively to 19th and 23rd place after they both took four wickets in the second match.
