New Zealand captain Sophie Devine will retire from ODI cricket after the World Cup later this year.The 35-year-old, who will skipper the side at the 50-over World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, will remain available for T20Is. One of the finest all-rounders in world cricket, Devine is fourth on New Zealand's all-time run-scorers list with 3,990, while she is one of only two players - alongside Lea Tahuhu - to have taken more than 100 wickets.Appointed captain in 2020, Devine led the White Ferns to T20 World Cup glory against South Africa in 2024. "It feels like the right time for me to start stepping away," said Devine.
"It's important that everyone knows I'm focused and dedicated to giving this group everything I can before I step away."I'm really excited by where this young group's going and I'm looking forward to playing my part in the next six to nine months."Liz Green, head of New Zealand women's performance, said Devine had the team's "full support" after her decision. The World Cup begins on 30 September, with co-hosts India and Sri Lanka facing each another in Bengaluru.

Only 22,137 fans attended Chelsea's opening Club World Cup match against LAFC at a 71,000 capacity stadium in Atlanta, but FIFA chiefs are confident that the event is a success FIFA bosses regard the Club World Cup as a success despite the low attendances. Chelsea 's opening fixture in the tournament with Los Angeles FC saw only 22,137 fans turn up in the vast Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They are also braced for more low attendances in other Group matches but were expecting low crowds in certain games despite slashing ticket prices to as low as £38 for general admission. However, FIFA have already totted up aggregate crowds of more than 250,000 for the tournament and are fully expecting it to catch light in the later rounds with big showdowns lined up. They saw gates in excess of 60,000 for Inter Miami's opener and 80,000-plus in the Rose Bowl to watch PSG beat Atletico Madrid. Chelsea was a big disappointment on Monday in Atlanta but it was played at 3pm local time on a normal working day and yet there is an expectation they will keep daytime games in next year's World Cup. However, Los Angeles getting through did mean a lower gate because if Mexican side Club America had won that play-off for the final spot there was an expectation they could have sold out the stadium in Atlanta three times over. There has also been decent TV viewing figures with Channel 5 reporting peak audiences in excess of 560,000 even for Bayern Munich 's 10-0 win over Auckland City. Even though the Chelsea game was a serious blow, FIFA expect the final and semi finals in the 82,500 capacity Met Life Stadium to be a huge attraction. They still see the Club World Cup as a work in progress, it will take time to catch on and to grow. But the feeling is that it has so far been a success rather than a flop despite the stay-away fans and public criticism of players being forced to play too many games. Gareth Southgate targets return to manage national team
Former England manager Gareth Southgate has applied to become the new head coach of Poland's national team, according to reports. The 54-year-old stepped down as England manager last July following his side's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate was linked with replacing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager in October. However, he ruled out the prospect of making a quick return to management and made it clear he is in 'no rush' to find his next role after his resignation with England. 'I won't coach in the next year for sure, I'm certain of that,' Southgate said in October. 'I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. 'I'm enjoying my life, so there's no rush. I'm fortunate that there are lots of opportunities presenting themselves.' According to Polish daily newspaper Przeglad Sportowy, Southgate has now submitted an application to become Poland's new head coach. The report adds that Southgate has also 'personally expressed his desire to take over' Poland's national side. Poland are looking for a new head coach following Michal Probierz's resignation last week. The decision came after Robert Lewandowski, Poland's record goalscorer, said he would not play for his country while Probierz is in charge after he was replaced as captain by Piotr Zielinski. 'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' Lewandowski said in a statement on social media. 'I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world.' More Trending Probierz opted to step down as Poland's head coach and said in a statement: 'I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach. 'Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.' Probierz was appointed as Poland's head coach in September 2023 but his side finished bottom of their group at Euro 2024. World Cup winner's day at Rangers with old schoolmate a ‘dream come true'
In doing so, Broughshane man Rock reunited with winger Ross McCausland both of whom attended the same primary and secondary schools. Over the weekend, 24-year-old Rock teamed up with Gurney to create history with the pair beating Wales 10-9 in a dramatic Final in Frankfurt for Northern Ireland's first triumph in the World Cup of Darts. It was a sensational performance from the duo which has been lauded in their home country and beyond. Before Rock's heroics in Germany, he took part in a different sporting challenge prior to the 2024/25 football season finishing with leading darts manufacturer Target Darts and Rangers FC joining forces for a fun day. Testing their skills against passionate Rangers fan Rock, who also supports Ballymena United, and 2018 PDC World Champion Rob Cross were goalkeepers Jack Butland, Liam Kelly and Mason Munn plus McCausland and Bailey Rice. McCausland and Munn are, of course, from Northern Ireland with the former a senior international and the latter hoping to be in the future. All were involved in a nine-dart challenge, a 501 face-off with Team Rock defeating Team Cross and the footballers took on the darts players in a 'First to Three Bullseye v Crossbar showdown'. The twist was that Rock and Cross had to hit the bar and the Rangers aces had to hit the bullseye. Josh proved to be accurate with a ball as well, hitting the crossbar three times to win the challenge. 'It was a dream come true. I've been a Rangers fan all my life and obviously seeing Jack, Liam and all, what an experience,' said Rock. 'When I was standing outside the gates, I was shaking like a leaf because I've been a big fan all my life. It was great.' On McCausland, who is two years younger, the World Cup winner revealed: 'I'm very friendly with Ross. We went to the exact same primary school and exact same high school. Obviously I chose my path and he chose his path. It was good to see Ross again.' Rangers goalkeeper Butland said: 'I've known Josh for a long time and I met Rob a few years back as well. I've always liked my darts and to be able to do something like this especially with Josh being such a big Rangers fan it was a really good day.'
