A rising star at Real Madrid now faces criminal case
On Wednesday, it was officially confirmed that
Raul Asencio
, a 22-year-old
Real Madrid
defender who has become a key figure in
Carlo Ancelotti
's squad, could face criminal proceedings over allegations that he shared a sex tape involving a minor.
The investigation stems from a June 2023 incident in Gran Canaria, where several youth players from Madrid were on holiday. The case involves allegations of a non-consensual recording of a sexual encounter between players and two girls, one of them under the age of 16, and the alleged sharing of that footage without the girls' consent. Spanish authorities are now moving toward trial after an extensive investigation.
Asencio has made a rapid ascent at Real Madrid, having been promoted from the 'B' team (Castilla) amid a defensive injury crisis. He has started 40 matches across all competitions this season, including crucial Champions League clashes against Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Arsenal. He also featured in Madrid's 2-1 win against Real Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, the same day the court's findings were made public.

The Athletic, which spoke to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the case (all of whom requested anonymity due to the legal sensitivity), has broken down the allegations, legal proceedings, and the broader fallout, both within Spain and at Real Madrid.
The allegations, what happened in Gran Canaria?
The events under investigation occurred on June 15, 2023, at the Amadores Beach Club in Puerto Rico, a town on the island of Gran Canaria, where five Real Madrid youth players were vacationing. According to reports reviewed by The Athletic, a consensual sexual encounter took place between three of the players and two girls. One of the girls was 18 years old, the other under 16.
The legal case focuses on the alleged recording of the encounter on a mobile phone — reportedly without consent — and the distribution of that footage, again without the girls' consent.
The younger girl and her mother filed a formal complaint on September 6, 2023, at a Guardia Civil station in Santa Maria de Guia, near Las Palmas. A second complaint followed from the 18-year-old. Their testimonies, which were leaked to Spanish media, allege that the girls found out about the recording on the same day it occurred and asked the players to delete the footage.
In an anonymous interview with Diario AS in September 2023, one of the girls said the players promised to delete the footage but instead, 'transferred it to other mobiles.' According to the girls' statements, they only discovered in August that the footage still existed when a boyfriend of a friend, also in Madrid's C team, told them he had seen the video.
Following these revelations, on September 15, several plainclothes officers from the Guardia Civil arrived at Real Madrid's training facilities. There, they arrested Ferran Ruiz,
Juan Rodriguez
, and Andres Garcia, and questioned Asencio — initially as a witness. However, during the interrogation, Asencio's status changed to that of a formal suspect.
Legal developments and the charges
According to court documents cited by The Athletic, Ruiz, Rodriguez, and Garcia face charges related to the recording and distribution of sexual content involving a minor and another woman. Asencio is charged only with allegedly sharing the footage — not recording or disseminating it himself.
On Wednesday, a Gran Canaria court announced that its investigation phase had concluded, listing potential charges that include:
Discovery of secrets without consent and violation of privacy
Distribution of videos without victims' consent
Recruitment or use of minors for pornographic purposes
Possession of sexual material involving minors
The Athletic previously reported in February 2025 that a Spanish court had rejected an appeal from Asencio seeking provisional dismissal of the case. During that appeal, it was confirmed in court documents that one of the girls involved was under 16.
An early judicial error, reported widely in the Spanish press, had wrongly stated that Asencio faced the same charges as the other three. That was later corrected by the judge to reflect that Asencio is accused only of sharing the footage, not recording or distributing it.
Asencio's public statement and club position
Until recently, Asencio had largely stayed silent. In March, when called up to the Spain national team for the first time, he gave a brief comment to Television Española:
'Everyone is very aware of what they are doing, so I am very calm.'
But on Thursday evening, following growing media coverage, Asencio issued a formal public statement, which was widely shared by Spanish outlets:
'I have not participated in any behavior that violated the sexual freedom of any woman, much less of minors.'
'The court order, as far as I am concerned, limits its content to the possible momentary viewing of some images by a third party, without attributing to me any participation in their recording or dissemination.'
'The accusation made against me, as expressly stated in the court decision itself, is strictly provisional in nature. Therefore, the presumption of innocence must continue to prevail.'
'In the event that charges are finally brought and an oral trial is opened, I will continue to exercise my defence before the Courts and Tribunals, in which I maintain full confidence, reaffirming that I am not involved in any criminal conduct.'
Will Asencio continue to play?
Despite the ongoing legal case, Asencio continues to feature for Real Madrid, largely due to an injury crisis in the backline. First-choice defenders Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba have all been sidelined, and Asencio has remained part of the starting lineup.
According to The Athletic, the only time he was dropped from a matchday squad was December 21, 2023, when he had to testify the following day.
Madrid, which issued a brief statement in September 2023 confirming that four youth players had given statements to authorities, has not commented publicly since. Club sources have repeatedly pointed to Spain's principle of presumption of innocence.
Asencio is eligible to play in the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, and sources at the Spanish FA suggest he faces no barriers to being called up again, despite the case. However, Spain coach
Luis de la Fuente
is expected to stick with his regular defenders, including Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsí,
Dani Vivian
, and
Robin Le Normand
.
Fan reactions and political silence
The scandal has ignited furious responses from fans at stadiums across Spain. During a Clasico match, Barcelona supporters chanted: 'Asencio, to jail.' At a Copa del Rey semi-final in March at Real Sociedad's Reale Arena, fans chanted: 'Asencio die.'
That game was temporarily stopped by referee
Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez
after Vinicius Junior activated La Liga's anti-hate protocol. A stadium announcement warned fans against further abuse. The same protocol was invoked in a match against Deportivo Alaves.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti, when asked whether he considered resting Asencio to protect him, replied:
'No, no, no. This (the insults) is what shouldn't be happening.'
Despite widespread public scrutiny, no political or institutional body has issued a formal statement about the case, as legal proceedings have not yet reached trial.

Jonathan Joss killed in hate crime? Husband claims killer used slur as actor lay dying

Jonathan Joss The husband of murdered King of the Hill actor Jonathan Joss says the man who shot him stood over the dying star, laughed, and delivered a slur. Joss, 59, was gunned down Sunday night near his home in San Antonio, Texas, in what his spouse, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, believes was a hate-motivated attack by a homophobic neighbor after years of harassment. 'Everything was really close range. It was in the head,' Kern de Gonzales told The Independent. 'I held his face together while I told him how much I loved him. He could still hear me… I could tell he was trying to say, 'I love you.'' Kern de Gonzales claimed that the killers words while Joss was dying included homophobic slur. During the confrontation, he recounted the assailant's threatening behaviour while holding him at gunpoint. The attacker mockingly said, "'Oh, you love him? Joto,'" as per Kern de Gonzales's account. He further clarified, "' Joto' is Spanish for f****t. I never knew the word until I came to Texas, and then I heard it a lot." The accused shooter, identified as 52-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, was arrested near the scene and has been charged with first-degree murder. According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), Ceja admitted to the shooting, stating simply, 'I shot him.' However, in a statement released Monday, SAPD said investigators had found 'no evidence to indicate that… Mr. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Te asiguri cu NN, ai teste genetice cadou. 'We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information,' the department added. 'Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly.' Read more: Jonathan Joss was not murdered because he was gay, says San Antonio police, refuting husband's claim Additionally, SAPD records claim officers responded to more than 40 calls involving Joss in 2024, ranging from welfare checks to mental health concerns and neighbor disputes. Still, Kern de Gonzales insists his husband was not violent- only outspoken. Kern de Gonzales, identifying as transgender man, strongly disputed the department's stance. He alleged the couple had endured years of targeted hostility from Ceja, and says their repeated complaints were ignored by law enforcement. 'They ignored us, refused to file police reports for about two years [over the couple's complaints of harassment], and now they're trying to say it wasn't a hate crime,' he told The Independent. 'It's like when the police investigate themselves and find they did nothing wrong.' He also pointed to earlier, deeply unsettling events involving the suspect- including discovering their deceased dog's skull near their mailbox following a house fire this past winter. That detail does not appear in the SAPD incident report. According to Kern de Gonzales, the fatal confrontation began after Joss shouted at Ceja. The couple had stepped outside to check the mail when the alleged gunman approached with a weapon. 'I don't care if me and my husband were walking around with one pitchfork in our hand and another pitchfork up our a**, we didn't point any weapons at anybody,' he said. 'When the man rolled up with the gun, we were checking the mail.' Joss, who was of Native American descent, was best known for voicing John Redcorn on the long-running animated series King of the Hill. Beyond his work in entertainment, his husband says he was deeply spiritual and often chanted or drummed in the yard- acts that, he alleges, drew racial abuse from some in the neighborhood. 'I had never seen someone be accosted for being Native American,' said Kern de Gonzales. 'People would drive by and yell out the window, 'F***ing Indian. '' He added that Joss also faced ridicule for his appearance. 'Jonathan would be harassed for just being in his yard wearing a dress,' he said. 'When people would ask why he wore a dress, he would say, 'Because I have nice legs.' And he did. He looked beautiful in a dress. And I think a lot of people were threatened by that, because Jonathan could wear a dress and still be masculine and confident.'

Brazil feeling Ancelotti effect

Rio De Janeiro, June 4 (UNI) Defender Marquinhos has praised the early impact of Carlo Ancelotti on Brazil's national team, expressing confidence that the newly appointed manager can inject a spark into the squad as it prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers. Ancelotti, who officially took charge last week after leaving Real Madrid, will lead Brazil for the first time on Thursday when the Selecao confronts Ecuador in Guayaquil. Five days later, Brazil will host Paraguay in Sao Paulo. Wins in both matches will all but secure the five-time world champion a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Brazil currently sits fourth in South America's qualifying standings, with the top six teams earning direct entry. "The expectations, desire and ambition are the best possible," Marquinhos told a news conference from Brazil's training base in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday. "The new manager has already shown the strength he has and what he can do in football, the intelligence he has. That's what the national team needs." The 31-year-old said the squad had already begun to respond to the Italian's leadership and charisma. "You can see already that Carlo brings a certain energy," the former Corinthians and Roma player said. "There is a feeling of something new and that something is coming. This short period before the [2026] World Cup is going to be very important. "But it's just a start and we know that everything will depend on what we do on the pitch. When we start winning we can also get the fans and the press on our side and everything will be easier. Hopefully this good energy can help us to get the job done on the pitch." Marquinhos arrived in Brazil less than three days after captaining Paris Saint-Germain to its first-ever UEFA Champions League title with a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan at Allianz Arena in Munich. "My voice is coming back a little now. But these were days and nights of great emotion," he said. "I think it's worth mentioning that Paris believed in a project for 12 years, even back when it seemed distant. Having managed to achieve a goal in such a way was very special. Being part of that was gratifying. "There's only one year to go until the World Cup and within PSG I've already seen that the dynamics within a team can change very quickly. I hope that happens here in the national team as well." UNI/XINHUA BM

All-party delegation concludes 3-day visit to Spain, highlights India's zero tolerance to terrorism

'The delegation concluded its visit having effectively communicated India's strategic approach and firm message of zero tolerance towards terrorism to Spanish government leaders, lawmakers, civil society and the Indian diaspora, strengthening bilateral ties and mutual understanding,' the Indian embassy in Madrid said in a statement on Tuesday. The group, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, is one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Madrid : An all-party Indian delegation has concluded its three-day visit to Spain after conducting a series of meetings with government officials and civil society representatives to highlight India's 'zero-tolerance' stance against terrorism and rally global support. On Monday, the delegation met members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee led by Vice President Antonio Gutierrez Limones. It also held a separate meeting with Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares. In engagements with the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, the delegation stressed that as the world's fourth-largest economy, 'India remains committed to peace, but not at the cost of its sovereignty,' read the statement. It said the meeting aimed to reinforce India's call to 'dismantle cross-border terror infrastructure and end the distinction between terrorists and their enablers'. In a call on Albares, the delegation provided a comprehensive overview of India's approach to countering terrorism. 'Albares conveyed his understanding and conveyed his understanding and the unequivocal support of Spain for India's efforts to combat terrorism and reaffirmed the importance of global peace,' the statement said, adding that he emphasised that 'terrorism will never prevail and that Spain stood with India in this issue.' The delegation, also comprising MPs Rajeev Rai, Captain Brijesh Chowta, Premchand Gupta and Ashok Kumar Mittal, visited the Association of Victims of Terrorism, an organisation that supports over 4,800 victims of terrorism. They reaffirmed India's unwavering determination to eliminate terrorism in all its forms. 'The delegation also emphasised India's diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting a principled, consistent and coordinated global response to terrorism,' the statement said. The group also engaged in dialogue with intellectuals, think tanks and representatives from civil society at a discussion hosted by the Spain-India Council Foundation. Delegation members stressed India's 'staunch resolve to combat terrorism and commitment to peace'. They also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora. 'The visit of All-Party Parliamentary Delegation to Spain was successful in effectively conveying India's zero-tolerance approach to terrorism to government leaders, lawmakers, civil society and the Indian diaspora- strengthening bilateral ties and mutual understanding,' the embassy said in a separate X post. Its visit was part of India's broader outreach with key international partners to build an international alliance for cooperation in addressing terrorism. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
