SOMETHING hangs heavy over Malaysian football, like a curse.
The national team just achieved a breathtaking 4-0 demolition of Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers, but the celebrations are muted – or worse – turning into sneers.

Malaysia's heritage players feel loved at Bukit Jalil

KUALA LUMPUR: The five men from the Western Hemisphere were overwhelmed by the love from Malaysian fans on Tuesday. The heritage players, making their Malaysia debut, won the hearts of more than 61,000 appreciative fans at the National Stadium, as they helped Malaysia crush Vietnam 4-0 in an Asian Cup qualifier. The Argentine-born winger, Imanol Machuca, came on in the 72nd minute as a reserve, and was welcomed by a thunderous roar from the crowd. "Unforgettable night, thank you for all the love, this is just the beginning," said Machuca in his social media post. The Spain-born defender Jon Irazabal, who played the full 90 minutes, said: "An honour to represent Malaysia in my first game. Thank you all for the incredible support, everything felt easier with you behind us. I'm grateful for the opportunity and ready for the next battle." The Argentina-born striker Rodrigo Holgado, who scored Malaysia's second goal in the 59th minute, wrote: "A dream night. I'm very happy to represent this beautiful country and fulfil this dream in my football career. I want to thank everyone who has been part of this, my teammates for the warm welcome, the coaching staff, and all the people of this wonderful country who made me feel so happy from the first minute." The Brazil-born Joao Figueiredo, who opened the scoring in the 49th minute, and the Argentine-born centreback Facundo Garces were also moved by the fans' response.

Pakistan not taking Malaysia lightly despite strong head-to-head record

PAKISTAN men's hockey team coach Tahir Zaman admitted that his squad has no advantage against Malaysia in the opening match of the FIH Nations Cup tomorrow, despite having a good head-to-head record against the Speedy Tigers. According to him, past results cannot be used as a benchmark, and he holds great respect for the Malaysian team, which he considers a strong side. 'We will not go by records because nowadays hockey and world rankings have changed. We are quite aware of that. 'So, as I said, we do have respect for our opponents Malaysia. They are stronger when playing on home ground and with crowd support,' he told a pre-match press conference here today. Pakistan holds a strong record against Malaysia, with 20 wins, eight draws and five losses since 1968. The last time the two teams met was during the group stage of the Asian Champions Trophy, where the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Meanwhile, Pakistan team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt described Malaysia as a formidable and experienced team that is difficult to beat. He said the match against Malaysia would serve as a good test for Pakistan. 'Malaysia is also a very strong opponent, and we are already preparing for that. So, we will give them a hard time,' he added.
