Promising reform, Noem tells US Coast Guard Academy graduates they will lead a ‘brand new' service

Toronto Star21-05-2025

The U.S. Coast Guard is facing its largest readiness crisis since World War II, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Wednesday as she promised an overhaul of the service that she called the 'point of the spear' in the nation's defense.
Noem, the keynote speaker at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's commencement, outlined the Trump administration's plans to increase the service's military workforce by at least 15,000 by the end of fiscal year 2028. The plan also calls for reducing the number of admirals by 25%, boosting recruiting efforts and increasing the fleet, including icebreakers that are used in the Arctic.

Springsteen's Berlin concert echoes with history and a stark warning

BERLIN (AP) — Veteran rock star Bruce Springsteen, a high-profile critic of President Donald Trump, slammed the U.S. administration as 'corrupt, incompetent and treasonous' during a concert Wednesday in Berlin. He was addressing tens of thousands of fans at a stadium built for the 1936 Olympic Games that still bears the scars of World War II and contains relics from the country's dark Nazi past. 'Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices, stand with us against authoritarianism, and let freedom reign,' he said. Springsteen, long a political opponent of the president, has made increasingly pointed and contentious public statements in recent concerts. He denounced Trump's politics during a concert last month in Manchester, calling him an 'unfit president' leading a 'rogue government' of people who have 'no concern or idea for what it means to be deeply American.' Springsteen is no stranger to Berlin. In July 1988, he became one of the first Western musicians to perform in East Germany, performing to a ravenous crowd of 160,000 East Germans yearning for American rock 'n' roll and the freedom it represented to the youth living under the crumbling communist regime. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. An Associated Press news story from that period says 'fireworks steaked through the sky' and hundreds of people in the audience waved handmade American flags as they sang along to 'Born in the USA.' Almost four decades later, Springsteen issued a stark warning: 'The America that I love, the America that I've sung to you about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration.'

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith sees 'encouraging signs' in federal approach to energy

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed optimism in Prime Minister Mark Carney's approach to energy at a Calgary conference. Article content However, speaking at the Global Energy Show, Smith said Carney 'has the ability to show leadership and be able to either substantially revise or completely eliminate some of those bad policies.' Article content Article content She later noted several policies, including the emissions cap, tanker ban and Bill C-69, among others. Article content Article content 'A lot of the people who imposed bad policies over the last 10 years are still in key positions in either his government or his caucus . . . I recognize that he has a real challenge on climbing down on some of them,' said Smith. Article content Article content For other policy changes, she acknowledged the 'large amount' of work and time it would take to repeal them. Article content 'I'm going to be optimistic,' said Smith, adding she hopes for change during the next legislative session this fall. Article content In addition to policy, Smith also noted a need for more 'nation-building' projects, pipelines in particular. Article content 'We need projects that go north to Grays Bay, that go east to Churchill, and also potentially a modern version of Energy East,' she said. Article content Article content Those routes would address Canada's geopolitical priorities and Arctic security, she added. Article content 'Alberta benefits tremendously from developing its energy to the fullest, but the rewards aren't limited to our province or a handful of companies — far from it. Everybody wins when Alberta realizes its full potential of its energy,' said Smith. Article content Article content 'I've seen encouraging signs that the prime minister is open to this thinking. Now we need to turn these ideas and these opportunities into action,' said Smith. Article content Perhaps the first step would be a couple of pipeline expansions, in particular Trans Mountain and something to the U.S., she said. Article content 'I know that the U.S. is quite interested in having this conversation with us about how to increase the supply of our oil going south. But then we've also seen the premiers come together, looking at a Port of Prince Rupert to Churchill energy corridor,' Smith said.
